    bitchin'! CMOS reset worked...the one thing I didn't think of. Now can anyone tell me why using vista's sleep mode would bork the box so it doesn't start? As I now realize I used the sleep button and not the damned pull out menue to shutdown/restart.

    ok, tired killing Xserver with ctrl+alt+backspce. IF, and only IF I time it right I get 2 screen blinks into a full lock. if I come in late the keyboard is already locked solid.

    Also, I forgot to say that the mouse moves freely when the lock up occors just no context curser changes, and no responce from keyboard ( no caps/num lock indicator change). have tried 2 keyboards with same results, one USB, one PS/2.
