Thanks for the advice, I have decided to take your recommendation of the Asus P8Z77-V LK as it looks like it comes from a series of well built boards. I plan to buy in the next few days, is there anything I should know about the MOBO that might tempt me to go for one in the next price range?
I will be using windows 7 pro 64bit.
I like that Asus MOBO, it looks well made like all the boards in that series and has lots of features and SATA for its price.
The Asus Xonar DX looks like a good entry level sound card, but I may delay a purchase until I have learned more about making...

I have two TX650 V2s. They are very quiet and the stats speak for themselves.
Not too sure about gaming specs and the i5/i7 but be awear the architecture is different with i5/i7 and the specs do not really compair to the older processor architectures.

All I need is a 1 or 2 disk SATA arrangement. raid 1 would be good but not important. The main thing is that it is low power so I dont need anything too overkill.

I am using a "learning kit" which consists of a book and trial version of SQL Server 2005 in order to pass the MS 70-431 exam in MSSQL Server admin.
My biggest issue is that, although you can play around on the test database, you dont have any real work to do so its hard to become familiar...
In Fallout 3 you bump into people who mention things that you dont even know about yet, which totally ruins the story. I think I might like DAO for the story alone if I ever have time to play it.
