just make sure your controller card / motherboard can boot from sata and that you have a way to get into windows successfully on the sata drive before formatting / deleting the IDE drive.

if its a physical harddrive problem (other than the lovely 'click of death') then try spinrite if its a software problem (missing MFT / fat / etc) then the probably best chance is using a 3rd party program to raw-read the drive and get the data back... but if the MFT / Fat / etc is...
