Hasn't Seagate bought Maxtor? I'm still waiting for my Malaysian 320GB replacement (failed with SMART errors).

Maybe try leaving it on without loading an OS? For example in BIOS or on a boot screen. See if it does that then. That way you can check if it's Windows related or it's the hard drive doing it.

Yes, the Seatools tests fail too but don't show any details as to why. I may try returning it since I ordered it only a week ago. Any recommendations what other drive could possible be better? I need 300-400GB.

This is a brand new hard drive: 320GB Seagate ST3320620NS. The problem is that SMART is reporting Failed under "Seek Error Rate" with value: 23 current, 22 worst while it should be more than 30... I searched and others usually have 60+ there. I wouldn't notice there was something wrong...
