    From Spinning Rust

What are you going to do with that array? The reason I ask is that you may be better served with Sata SSDs in Raid. They are cheaper per GB and much easier to find a solution to get several into a system (You must already ahve something with 8 Sata ports) . They are still going to be way...

New Samsung 850 in 20th percentile on userbenchmark? Something wrong?

Maybe is background tasks or trim/garbage collection. hard to say without a clean install of windows ect.

Is it still a bad idea to RAID 0 SSDs

Well SSDs do still fail , you just have less of an issue with unrecoverable reads ect. Also its not just the number of drives thats an issue it complexity as a whole. Instead of 1 Drive + File System you have multiple drives , Raid and the files system (so at least 2 more things to go wrong)...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Hi Guys Any experiences with the Areca ACR-1883IX-24? Seems to be on par with the Adaptec 8 Series but with 24 ports. Also i'm assuming my arrays will not migrate directly across to that card as they would with Adaptec. Edit Turns out the Areca cards are very expensive in Australia so I...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Thanks, that was the experience that my friends have had, Expanders seems to just been too much of a hassle. Yeah, I'm running Win10 Pro at the moment as it provides the best gaming compatibility (server OS's tend to be a pain), I have looked into ReFS however it seems to be fairly immature at...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into a Card and Expander, assuming its a lot cheaper that might work out well. the main reason i have never gone down that path before is that everyone i know has had issues with drive compatibility in expander/controller environments where as I have not. Quick...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

I currently have an Adaptec 51645 Raid controller (about 6-8 years old I think) with 20 HDDs spread across 3 Raid 5 arrays . I have been having a few issues with it (dropped drives, system lockups when transferring to arrays and once an error saying the firmware could not be loaded) so I think...

SATA Dock USB-C, safe at this time?

I have not used that dock but i did buy a similar product a few months back (3 or so) and my PC would not see any HDDs attached to it. I got a replacement and the same issue, tried different drivers (win10 is meant to have the correct drivers by default) and still no luck so whether its my Mobo...

    Seagate 8TB Internal HDD

Parity data is the same volume as the per drive volume of data (roughly) so if the data drives are being taxed then so is the parity drive. If the data you are writing is in bursts then the parity is in bursts, if the data is a constant stream so is the parity.

Any point in having 32GB of RAM right now?

And Windows caches all the the things as well. its cool with I transfer a file from a single HDD to my array and it goes at 500MB/s.

The MHz keyboard, next gen thoughts

I'm not so sure about that. Put in the hands of the right marketing company and even if there is no real world advantage it will sell. Look at all of those 9999999+ dpi mice out there. Yes they are technically better but if you ever use them on that setting they will make you PC unusable...

RAID is not a Backup... but snapshots are, kind of

I fear you have too much faith in humanity (or forum dwelling people). The general saying " Raid is not backup" still stands, whether or not the data is worth backing up is a separate issue. Other than that I totally agree, backup important stuff more than rubbish. Funny story about this...

Samsung SM951 AHCI SSD Performing Poorly At Sub-4k File Sizes

Is it you OS drive? If so that's most likely the cause. Most sites will benchmark with a separate OS drive.

    Seagate 8TB Internal HDD

I'm not sure if Raid4 would help, sure if the Non SMR drive failed and was replaced with a non SMR drive the writes to it would be fast however if a SMR drive failed you would need to write to it. (its not like SMR drives never fail but PMR ones do) When writing normally then you have to...

    Questions about Raid 0

I try would (have) recommend having separate SSD, one for OS and the second for Games. Non of the hassles of Raid0 , and you can reload windows and still ahve your steam folder . Plus your windows background stuff does not affect your games. Also Raid0 does not make stuff that much faster in...
