    From Spinning Rust

What are you going to do with that array? The reason I ask is that you may be better served with Sata SSDs in Raid. They are cheaper per GB and much easier to find a solution to get several into a system (You must already ahve something with 8 Sata ports) . They are still going to be way...

New Samsung 850 in 20th percentile on userbenchmark? Something wrong?

Maybe is background tasks or trim/garbage collection. hard to say without a clean install of windows ect.

Is it still a bad idea to RAID 0 SSDs

Well SSDs do still fail , you just have less of an issue with unrecoverable reads ect. Also its not just the number of drives thats an issue it complexity as a whole. Instead of 1 Drive + File System you have multiple drives , Raid and the files system (so at least 2 more things to go wrong)...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Hi Guys Any experiences with the Areca ACR-1883IX-24? Seems to be on par with the Adaptec 8 Series but with 24 ports. Also i'm assuming my arrays will not migrate directly across to that card as they would with Adaptec. Edit Turns out the Areca cards are very expensive in Australia so I...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Thanks, that was the experience that my friends have had, Expanders seems to just been too much of a hassle. Yeah, I'm running Win10 Pro at the moment as it provides the best gaming compatibility (server OS's tend to be a pain), I have looked into ReFS however it seems to be fairly immature at...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into a Card and Expander, assuming its a lot cheaper that might work out well. the main reason i have never gone down that path before is that everyone i know has had issues with drive compatibility in expander/controller environments where as I have not. Quick...

    Best 20+ Disk Raid Controller

I currently have an Adaptec 51645 Raid controller (about 6-8 years old I think) with 20 HDDs spread across 3 Raid 5 arrays . I have been having a few issues with it (dropped drives, system lockups when transferring to arrays and once an error saying the firmware could not be loaded) so I think...

SATA Dock USB-C, safe at this time?

I have not used that dock but i did buy a similar product a few months back (3 or so) and my PC would not see any HDDs attached to it. I got a replacement and the same issue, tried different drivers (win10 is meant to have the correct drivers by default) and still no luck so whether its my Mobo...

    Seagate 8TB Internal HDD

Parity data is the same volume as the per drive volume of data (roughly) so if the data drives are being taxed then so is the parity drive. If the data you are writing is in bursts then the parity is in bursts, if the data is a constant stream so is the parity.

Any point in having 32GB of RAM right now?

And Windows caches all the the things as well. its cool with I transfer a file from a single HDD to my array and it goes at 500MB/s.

The MHz keyboard, next gen thoughts

I'm not so sure about that. Put in the hands of the right marketing company and even if there is no real world advantage it will sell. Look at all of those 9999999+ dpi mice out there. Yes they are technically better but if you ever use them on that setting they will make you PC unusable...

RAID is not a Backup... but snapshots are, kind of

I fear you have too much faith in humanity (or forum dwelling people). The general saying " Raid is not backup" still stands, whether or not the data is worth backing up is a separate issue. Other than that I totally agree, backup important stuff more than rubbish. Funny story about this...

Samsung SM951 AHCI SSD Performing Poorly At Sub-4k File Sizes

Is it you OS drive? If so that's most likely the cause. Most sites will benchmark with a separate OS drive.

    Seagate 8TB Internal HDD

I'm not sure if Raid4 would help, sure if the Non SMR drive failed and was replaced with a non SMR drive the writes to it would be fast however if a SMR drive failed you would need to write to it. (its not like SMR drives never fail but PMR ones do) When writing normally then you have to...

    Questions about Raid 0

I try would (have) recommend having separate SSD, one for OS and the second for Games. Non of the hassles of Raid0 , and you can reload windows and still ahve your steam folder . Plus your windows background stuff does not affect your games. Also Raid0 does not make stuff that much faster in...

    Seagate 8TB Internal HDD

I have 6 in Raid 5. Rebuild time (I did a Verify with Fix, rebuild without a failed drive) and it took a bit less than 5 days compared to 8-12 hours on my other 4/8 (4TBs) drive arrays. In this time I could happily watch TV shows (720p) without any issues, if I wrote to the disk at the same...

Best time to buy a pc this year?

Enterprise hard drive for desktop use?

Define enterprise drive. There are lots of different types and they vary a fair amount. Some are pretty much just desktop drives with a firmware change, Others are faster (10k, 15k) some are slower (Seagate Archive drives). Edit They are almost always more expensive but often include a better...

Windows 8 Multiple Drives with 1 Drive Letter

With those utilities what happens when a single drive dies? As you don't know what files are where how do you know what to restore? (say if half the files in a folder are on a different disk do you have to check to see if every file is there?). I use a similar method to you single drives or...

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

There is a transfer from a 8X3TB to a 8X4TB array on the same card for reference. The card is a bottleneck for this transfer it seems (no drop off as the disks fill) But still that's 450+ MB/s both read and write for more than 900MB/s total is not terrible.
  21. B

Because I enjoy teasing you... quickest way to 120TB.

I'm sure that 10K drives top out at not much more than 1.8TB

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

I have a feeling something in my system is holding the card back, though I m not sure what. I used to get 600MB/s off some of my arrays but now its 500MB/s . Still with these drives for reads the I would assume that an array of 6 in raid 5 should hit 700MB/s easily (based on double the minimum...

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

I'm pretty sure these are open air drive so to speak. If you really want to use normal HDDs you could build a water tight HDD enclosure and submerge that. It would be hard to do but then again oil PCs are a pain any way so whats a bit more hassle I guess.

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

Well more info 48 Hours of transfer stats The write speed does not seem to drop off towards the end of the disk ever much which points to other bottlenecks. 40-50MB/s if you are lucky. What they are good for is home user style parity raid where most people would use them for media storage...

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

Well I can confirm that the Seagate 8TB drive work with adapter 51645 cards. The array is up and running and and been transferring data for the past 36 hours. The drives are very heavy and the platters take up almost the complete thickness of the drive. The PCB is flush with the bottom as...

2x240GB SSD in Raid 0 = Gaming performance?

I would (Did) personal go for a 128-256GB OS drive and then a second 500GB SSD for games. That way windows is not eating into your games performance and if you need to wipe your windows install you don't need to worry about steam ect.

Samsung XP941 still the current go to M.2 SSD?

Sure, in benchmarks. How much faster will Apps/OS boot vs a average SSD now? Then compare that to the jump from HDD to an average SSD. Sure it might be a lot faster (Hell I'll most likely get one for my next build) than current SSDs but still not life changing.
  28. B

Samsung XP941 still the current go to M.2 SSD?

Yeah that's the funny thing about SSDs, there is a huge jump from a HDD to an SSD but its only small increments in performance from SSD to SSD ( real world not benchmarks) It might take 1 minute to boot fro a HDD and say 10 seconds with an SSD, getting a better SSD drops it to 9 seconds ...

    Broke my first mouse

    Home server vs packaged NAS

Very few people who rant about URE mention anything more than the manufactures URE rating which might not be accurate (look at MTTF, like any drive will last 100 years) . All of my arrays have a capacity of great than 12TB and I have never had a double failure ( I have done loads of rebuilds due...

    Home server vs packaged NAS

Well you know what they say about Raid and backup :) . I'm not sure if this is always the case but generally the rebuild time is more tied to drive size than array size assuming you have a fast controller. As long as your controller can handle the higher parity calculations to comes down to...

How is RAID 1 in single NAS box a good idea?

Better to have 2 backups with consumer drives than 1 with enterprise. Look at companies like Blaze, they just use backups and redundancy to cover the higher failure rates. Also getting back onto the NAS topic, would you rather use Raid0 ? However likely you are to loss data when using Raid1...

How is RAID 1 in single NAS box a good idea?

To make everything even more complicated you should store a backup off site. If you house burns down no matter how many backups you have inside the house they are all gone.
  34. B

    Home server vs packaged NAS

I personally use Raid5 and have never had a double failure (8X4TB arrays), with a 8-12 hour rebuild not being a huge issue. I also have all of the data backed up up so worst case i just to a restore. Losing 6 drives worth of data a cross 3 arrays is not really and option. That might not be...

    Seagate 8TB Compatibility

I'm not sure if my controller supports 4k native drives, there are no Whitepapers on the 5 Series and 4K support but looking at the other white papers the bigger issues with 4K is booting not array creation and none on the arrays on my card are boot drives. Regarding Shingle drive, My Arrays...
