How do you completely erase SATA drive?

If you zero a drive, then put a file on it, then zero it again, using standard data recovery software you will get only zeros. That said, each bit on the platter is not a clear one or zero, there is a range and the signal the drive gets from the heads resembles a waveform, the drive takes...

Help! Pop was spilled into my cpu

I don't actually know the best course of action here since I've never had to deal with a soda soaked motherboard, but one thing I'll mention is you might want to consider distilled water or at least test the alcohol before submerging anything as isopropyl alcohol can strip off paint and soften...

Dell Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM 160GB HDD failed while I was at work?

That sounds reasonable considering how many errors you were getting and how slow it was going. Just keep your ddrescue logfile around so if you end up not getting everything you need you can make another attempt to fill in the gaps.

Help! Pop was spilled into my cpu

Wow that's pretty bad, too bad it wasn't caught on video. I guess your cat didn't feel like it was getting enough attention and decided to eliminate the competition ;) If you haven't done this already you may want to take out the motherboard, memory, cards, and cpu if you think it got wet...

Dell Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM 160GB HDD failed while I was at work?

You mount a partition in the image file as a loop device so for example: mount -o loop example.img /media/temp Iirc if you want to see what partitions there are on the disk you can list them with: fdisk -lu example.img unmount the image then remount specifying a certain starting point...

Dell Hitachi Travelstar 7200 RPM 160GB HDD failed while I was at work?

It sounds like you've already done many of the things I would recommend. When a drive starts to work intermittently like this it is often working on borrowed time and it may only start up correctly one or a few times before some component fails completely. My suggestion would have been to...

Seeking advice on RAID setup for my shiny new Linux server

xfs does have better performance in a lot of cases, my biggest worry with it is recovery when something goes wrong since it is not going to be supported indefinitely (may not be an issue here). And it has issues with data loss during power failure, Andrew Morton talks about it a little in a...

Seeking advice on RAID setup for my shiny new Linux server

rogue_jedi: yeah you're right, I forgot about that one, if /home has no space available you can't log in. Or I should say you can log in right before your display manager chokes halfway and hangs. Archer75: he said he has all the hardware already, so might as well take a ride on the crazy train.

Seeking advice on RAID setup for my shiny new Linux server

I'm not 100% sure on this but i think the only point of reserve space is to allow the filesystem to minimize fragmentation when the drive gets close to full, and to ensure there is space avaiable in /tmp and /var for temp files, log files, and the like. " man tune2fs -m...

hard drive failed but very valuable data on it

An enclosure is unlikely to help in this instance, if your motherboard controller cannot detect the drive then adding another, crappier controller between the drive and the motherboard is unlikely to change anything unless the problem was with the motherboard ide/sata controller. The so...

    Major Hard Drive Problem

If you are going to attempt to swap a circuit board on a recent Seagate hard drive you will want to find a drive with these characteristics (check the sticker on the drive): same model number and capacity same firmware version same country "site code" manufactured as close a possible to the...

hard drive failed but very valuable data on it

So if I understand this correctly, you had a system with an old 45GB drive, you added a 120Gb drive to the machine and now the old 45GB no longer works. When it spins up and makes the clunk, is it just once or does it do it multiple times in a regular pattern? Also does the drive spin down...

Seeking advice on RAID setup for my shiny new Linux server

Alright good luck with the nfs setup. Nfs3 was pretty weak from a security standpoint so they went kind of overboard with nfs4. It's used widely in corporate installations where they have everyone with their home directory mounted via nfs on a server, but setting it up for home use there is a...

    Strange IDE drive problems

Some ide drives have a jumper setting that makes them lie and report their capacity as 32GB so old motherboards don't flip out. There is an illustration here.

Seeking advice on RAID setup for my shiny new Linux server

With regard to what to do with the unused hardware in my previous suggestion, I was thinking to sell it. But if you are determined to use all that crazy stuff one thing you could do: the two raptors in a raid1 containing the swap partition and everything for the os except /home the four...
