Sam Altman hates Pc users using and hoarding Ram

@LukeTbk Sorry, but this is purely Sam wanting everyone to use their services
yes and everyone need a computer and ram to do so, I am not how clearer he could have been, it is about using a shared infracstructure for any serious non continous AI usage (openAI or otherwise) instead of everyone building its own capacity is the best use of ram when it get rare efficacy wise.

I disagree with his premise.
you think that every AI users building its own local capacity would fix the current ram shortage ? (his premise is so trivial that it is hard to disagree with hiim here....), disagreeing with the sentiment behind it of course, prefering that people use way less AI and can only use what they are able to orde capacity wise, etc... but his premise seem strong enough.

The "current RAM shortage" only exists because of Sam Altman.
Altman buying 40% of the world's RAM production is terrible allocation.
Corporations panic buying GPU racks to sit in warehouses because Jensen says "The more you buy, the more you save!" is terrible allocation.

The proposed scale of data center buildout is simply impossible. There is not enough electricity to make the chips go brrrrr and it would take decades to build out the capacity.

Local usage is better for everybody, all around, except Altman, Amodei, Alphabet, Musk, Huang etc. and their investors. If each company / individual were responsible for building and funding what they need, usage would plummet to what is actually, you know, useful and overall impact would be immensely reduced and spread out.

Edit: Just to clarify, yes, I disagree with the premise that huge AI datacenters are the "most efficient" allocation of RAM. Look at the current state and tell me how efficient it is.
As others have said before, they're buying RAM that hasn't been made for GPUs that don't exist to put in data centers that haven't been built.

You don't think LLM's are serious? I want an LLM so I can generate stupid meme's because the cloud ones are limiting.

His premise is that LLM's are bad but Data Center AI's are gooder, because LLM's are rarely used so ram isn't being fully utilized. We get it. The problem is that people build LLM's because Cloud AI is expensive and limiting, plus people do other things with their PC besides AI. This logic doesn't work. Remember that OpenAI bought 40% of the worlds ram production and ChatGPT isn't the best AI. Clearly other AI models are doing this with less ram. Sam Altman shouldn't throw stones from glass houses.

“I actually do want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers,” said Ram Altman on Twitter . “And it is fucking annoying that this was taken out of context. I have been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time.”

He is still the single person most responsible for the current shortage, and he gets no sympathy. He said exactly what he meant and the context was clear.
This, he is just playing victim now to try and save face, but it is too late, anyone who has listened to what Sam says, knows everything is about benefiting him.

Yep. If he was truly looking for efficiency he would only be buying what he could put in data centres right now, not buying up as much as his investors will to let him to capture supply. He's hoarding and everyone knows it.

Bingo, I am sure even if all of said datacenters got built, those take years, and by that time, said ram and GPU's will be old and underperform vs things released when they are needed.

I can't wait for the Ebay flood of server grade memory DDR4/5 (presume 5 mostly) that could come in the next few years!
