No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

you should be able to claim the expedition rewards in the anomaly on each save.
Yup.. all I was really interested in was my squid ship and the 'living lens' exosuit upgrade. So it goes.
The problem with using your main save, you can get locked into the expedition until you finish it. This one was time gated so you were stuck not playing your main save for a couple of months.
For sure. I just misunderstood the folk online about save transfers.

... and I think I am good on NMS for while. Well, until an interesting update happens or my buddy starts plateauing his play through and wants to try 'co-op'.

Hibert wasn't the best so jumped to Calypso and maybe that'll get me a squid ship in the future.

Man you discovered a whole new galaxy and i never got out of the solar system. Oh well i think i'll go play expanse ;)

I read an article headline theorizing that Murray may keep updating it indefinitely, lost where it was from though. He said if people keep playing he will keep updating basically.

New Cosmos patch out today, early reports of typical jankyness so beware as per usual. New update includes claiming your own starbase in systems, new alien outposts in space that buy/sell/trade and give missions. You can now build your own starbase free floating in space as well. New star map system in cockpit mode and a way to create alliances with other players.

How do I start playing this?

Just the new stuff or the expedition? The expedition hasn't started yet, probably next week after they work out any new bugs. Twitch drops start tomorrow and go for five days. A good way to get nice multi tools and free A class ships.

Like, ah, the whole thing. Bought it by accident (late night shopping with wine) when it came out, played it a little after a clean install, and just forgot about it.

So total noob.

Just fire that shit up. They have a pretty good tutorial to get you in to it these days. You wake up, crashed on a planet, not sure how you got there, and you'll have a mission to fix your ship. That mission will have you harvest some shit, build some shit, then you get your ship working and can start exploring the galaxy. It's a sandbox game so you do what you want at your own pace, but there's generally missions to guide you to all the different sorts of things like base building, freighters and so on. You also can basically get/change anything in game later so there's no worry about doing it "wrong" or having a "bad build" or something. Just play and see where it takes you.

Man if only I enjoyed this game. It just keeps giving.
I gave it like 50 hours. I certainly didn't do nearly half of the things that the game offers , but there was an aimlessness to it almost a pointlessness , it felt like, as far as what keeps me engaged in a game, so I put it down. I guess I could return to it at some point just for sightseeing. I just don't care about building bases or taming creatures. And it's a little too cartoony for me. And the storyline and NPC interactions all felt pretty shallow. Plus the multiplayer is half-assed and bolted on.
But man , you have to respect those developers for all the TLC they're giving the game.

Baller. That's what I needed to hear. Otherwise it seems so overwhelming at this point.
There's an overwhelming amount of stuff you can do but you don't have to do most of it. The only thing you really HAVE to do is harvest resources as if you don't, well you aren't going anywhere. The rest, really up to you if and when you do it. If you try something and don't like it, skip it. You can come back to it later, or not.

Also if you end up needing something because you want it but don't want to go through with getting it, there's probably someone on here who can help you. The game is multi-player so it is a situation where I could log in, meet you with my big freighter, and give you a bunch of resources and that sort of thing. There's tons of info online if you need guides on how to do things, or locations of good stuff peopel have discovered, but those can also all be ignored and you can just do what you want.

It is always going to be a problem with a massive, literally galaxy sized, procedurally generated game like this: Everything is going to be a bit samey and shallow. There's no way to have all that, and have it be a deep, well written, story. More or less the bigger a game world is, the more pointless much of it will be.

For some, that works well, like a literal sandbox it is a "make your own fun" situation and that works for some people. For others, that's boring, they want something more that someone else curated to enjoy.

What Sycraft said. Just follow the starter quest lines to learn how things work. Eventually you will get a prompt to go to the Anomoly in space to learn more things. After awhile you will get a chance to nab a freighter, I won't spoil how. Take it and learn how that works. Eventually it leads you down the path for corvettes, owning your own town etc..

Also along those lines: Early on you'll start off building a base, it'll walk you through that. Your first base will be crap. No big deal, because you can, and probably will, build LOTS of bases. You can have little crap ones that are just for warping to, or for harvesting resources, and a big elaborate "main base" and so on. Your starter base can forever stay the jank building you make, you never need to redo it if you don't want to (though you of course can).

So off to try to speed run Expedition 23. Papa wants to ride his diplo and vintage sentinel ship.

Saw this ah.. statue? building? near one of the starter locations. Bless the builders and not griefers. A few other points had 30+ comm orbs left by previous folk. Also amusing.

Also it was nice to see some of the old station setups again. Pretty fun. Thamium9 made a reappearance.

Yeah, some nice memories. For much of the first section you can't use 3rd person because it wasn't in the game at the time. Same with other players being just floating orbs.

Seems the Expedition turns on PvP by default so check the settings and avoid getting attacked by folk.

I swear these Expeditions are just teasing me. Exp22 I got my first squid ship, but couldn't transfer it. Exp23 I get my first pirate freighter and won't be able to transfer it. Bleh.

On a serious note - if you get a reward that you think "well this is odd. I'll just sell it!" don't do that. Like say a reward is lube and you think "Well that's kinda worthless and taking up space.. let's sell it!", yeah, naw dawg. Keep that as you'll need to make living glass with it. My smoothbrianed self sold it and then had to go end-run-around trying to find a NPC that had it and ultimately had to burn time going the tech route to get: hazmat gloves, gamma root, poo, glass, and the plan tree unlocked.

A decent walk through and items needed here.

Also rumor is getting the ships in part 4 is still bugged. Where you'll need 2800 nanites and it will only let you pick one or the other. So if you get that far don't claim it until an update fixes it.

From Steam forums on the ships bug at end of Exp23:

"This is correct, but just to be certain, before you collect them go to quicksilver npc on anomaly and use the 1400 nanites to get ONLY the Vintage Interceptor. Then claim the Golden Rasamama from the phase rewards for 1400 nanites then decline the Vintage Interceptor as you already own it and will waste 1400 nanites. If you claim both from quicksilver npc it could bug out when you return to main save, which happened to my mate and left him with neither ship. Hope this helps."

Also, a quick way to get nanites is to buy the suspicous tech/weapons caches from the vendors in a pirate system's starbase. Open up the tech/weapon ones to see what upgrade it is then sell it to the tech vendor who sells upgrades. Most of those X techs will sell for 200-300 nanites each. Don't install any you want to see though as they won't buy them once installed and uninstalled for storage.

I've also seen a few curious mold sites on a couple of planets. Might look around and see if someone has built a farming base for them.

Talking about bugs, it took me over an hour the other night to get the knowledge stone question done. Two systems and 7-8 planets to find one stone, next to a volcano no less. I think the quest has to be the active one for it to work so if you see a small knowledge stone, activate that quest in phase 2 (I think) and inspect it.

Solid note there. I am not hurting for nanites on my main save, but in this expedition it's running a little slim.

If nothing else expedition 23 has forced me to engage with parts of the game I haven't cared to before. I never really did the whole "overseer/settlers base thing" and now, out there somewhere on a hyper toxic and stormy planet, is a small town of gek who will wonder when their benevolent boss will get back from the gas station with his pack of smokes.

Also I never built a fighter ship and now I have this snazzy looking s-class that won't be used. So it goes.

I also hatched my egg and got this weird mushroom cap/floating boob implant/tumor creature in my line up with meh stats.

Wow.. so a number of things when you get to the final mission. If, for what ever reason, you have unfinished business in the Expedition 23 game play do it before heading to the Atlas.
Spoiler: Don't get attached to your save.

It drops you to a new galaxy like if you jumped through the core of Euclid so EVERYTHING is broken.

Some where out there in Euclid is a colony/settlement called "Hope's Orphanarium". I left a note saying "brb;went to get milk;2026.09.19". Hopefully someone sees it years later and assures my colonists I'm totes coming back. To be fair I did set up the colony to be profitable in about three real time days so that's good on them. Sucks they are in a toxic storm planet.

In good news - the update today - 7.04 - fixed the issue with the ships. I wrapped up that before heading to round out the Expedition and it converting my expedition save to a normal one.

From my main save (I started the expedition in a new save) the dude at the anomaly charged me 1400ish nanites to claim each ship. Kinda sucks, but so it goes. The rest of the rewards rocked over for free.

Papa did get his diplo so that's good:

Hmm, I'm avoiding spoilers at the moment but this might explain why some bases I've visited are dead or buggy and without power. At least a few helped me find gamma root. Imagine my surprise when a planet with "gamma root" in the scan data had no gamma root on it. In phase 4 now. My settlement was bugged and had some one fighting to save it when I landed and base parts already built on it. An hour later it was working normal. The new starbound multi-tool is cool looking. Someone built a handy base right next to a sentinel pillar. I burned out on that after one bad chart to an aggressive sentinel planet. Took me forever to find an archive too, I went through 5 or so charts.

Glad they fixed the ship issue since Im getting close to that one. Ive been very tempted to spawn in one of the old expedition ships just to have an S class ship but stuck with the S36 so far.

Most likely. I think I had left a trail of at least five bases behind in the course of this expedition so more Euclid trash I guess.

I turned off the multiplayer bits when I started so I only saw minimal build up and trash around, but certainly 'felt it' when landing got wonky or framerates took a dip on an empty field I was landing on. Pretty sure those were bases the game wasn't showing me. Though I did see a few people trying to wall off a sentinel ship or an ore field or two. Odd, but not a big issue.

The pillar was only two charts for me, but five for the archive. I ignored everyone's base names or beacons that tried to point me in the right way as the bulk over the last two expeditions were just red herrings for me.

Oddly recent reddit posts since the 7.04 update yesterday were reporting folk in the expedition, on their freighter, were seeing multiple S-tier snubby red Rasa ships with full inventory slots landing. Some dude claimed to have bought up four of them. Unsure if that was a nifty RNG tweak or people are making up stories again.

The ships are indeed fixed. I got my two reward ships just after making a new S class for that quest. It was buggy in that Rendesvous 4 system but a couple of system jumps later all of my fighters show up in my freighters docking bay. I even picked up a nice looking C class sentinel ship since it was right near the quest spot. My settlement is still bugged so it looks like I have to get a second one and/or quit running the first one and start again. I've gone thru 4 settlement charts now, last one was just eaten by the game by lag or something.

Pet battles were annoying in that it took me an hour to get it done. Settlement bugs were finally worked out and completed after like 4 hours of delays. Overall fun expedition if annoying at times. Got really annoying the last mission to Atlas where every jump had a pirate dreadnought attacking, like 4 systems in a row.

Post Expedition 23 I decided to see what this whole 'settlement' branch I've ignored is all about. It's a semi interesting game loop that you can upgrade buildings from 'c' to 's' with varying benefits after a bit.

You start with your settlement racking up debt and the only point where your settlement produces anything of value for you is when it has no debt. This means level all the industrial buildings up first so your debt goes down. Then, based on what race and what you have build you can get varying levels of minerals, plants, and components to have the settlement build.

Upgrading buildings tend to take one of five or six items so have a lot and just let 'er rip. Upgrades take between two minutes to an hour and a half real time depending on the building.

Every so often you have disputes, new members looking to join, and other administrative task you can weigh in on that help, hurt, or a mix your settlement. Those have been pretty amusing so far.

The occasional sentinel and pirate raids are annoying, but a small two minute diversion.

While in early stages you'll end up with a quest to upgrade your minotaur exocraft and an optional companion drone that rolls around and can sort of help fight other things. So that's nice.

When that quest line completes you can roll with: a pet, the drone, and an AI minotaur pack which is moderately hilarious to see try and figure out what the hell they are doing.

1790444023763.png

Over all a good diversion that I haven't explored and satisfied that I did.

Yeah, I leveled up my town in my main save a couple years ago I guess. They didn't have the individual building upgrades in yet or being able to own multiple settlements. The control console would give you the occasional choice to upgrade a building based on what it said the citizen want. I came back to the game last year after over six months of a break to a stockpile of stuff the town had made, maybe a million credits worth of items.
