Halo: Campaign Evolved (remake)

You can watch all the cutscenes here:

The cutscenes are so freaking bad.

I think the worst offender is the escape pod leaving the pillar of autumn.

It starts out with an elite stuck in the corner doing some sort of stupid dance just watching you as you throw the marine into the escape pod.

Then the escape pod flies all around the pillar of autumn including right next to the thrusters like it's some sort of super speed star fighter. It's an escape pod.....

Then it flies around an entire planet within seconds, and from the planet to the ring within seconds, then cruises the entire width of the ring in a half second.
So this escape pod can basically travel at light speed and turn on a dime. But it can't handle basic landing and the entire crew dies except for MC.

Complete joke of a studio.

19 years later, still not beaten.

I remember when I was younger and deep into everything Half Life 1, Half 2, all the myriad of mods....Halo started getting popular.

I'm sure I was just biased, but I didn't get the hype at all. I still don't, if I'm being honest. Everything about Halo felt like a generic, watered down version of something else.

To me the game itself wasn't groundbreaking at all. I was similar to you with being into Half Life and that first experience with Half Life surpasses my initial experience with Halo by miles.

What made it stand out (Hale Combat Evolved specifically) was hauling an extra tv (big ol' crt tvs remember) to a friend's house, linking two xboxes and playing 4v4 while shit talking to people in another room.

Trying this now. Did the new missions. I will say people over blew the woman character's role, she is a minor NPC. No idea how the main campaign has changed. Though I remembered why I don't really care much for Halo. Very repetitive. Simplistic floaty shooting and bullet sponge enemies, repetitive mission design and every other room looks exactly the same. If I recall in Halo CE they outright reused rooms multiple times, or they were extremely similar.

I think the main appeal would be for co-op and as an FPS for console back in 2001. Horrible? No, but quite bland for an FPS.

How's this game just for casual fun gameplay? I'm not a big Halo guy at all, when it came out I didn't get the hype whatsoever, as there were already killer first person shooters out at the original launch, like Half Life, and Quake 2 and Unreal, etc...all vastly better games, and even better were keyboard + mouse controlled, not some kiddy console controller.

Only Halo game I bought was Halo Infinite which did look great on my OLED monitor, and was a fun enough shooter, but got boring and repetitive real quick.

I think if you were bored by the gameplay loop in a modern Halo, you are going to be unimpressed with Halo 1.

That said, it was quite a phenomenon for its time. But also that was 25 years ago.

IMO, if you want to experience that part of history, price tag on Halo 1 in the MCC is more appealing.

I'm not sure I'd say those FPSes were 'vastly better'. HL1 had a great campaign but Quake 2 and Unreal's SP were not great. Halo's enemy AI at the time was leaps and bounds better than anything else. Halo really shined doing the campaign with a bud on Legendary mode and getting a group of buds over on the weekend to play some split-screen multiplayer on the TV was great fun.

Maybe not the greatest game ever but Halo MP and esp3cially Halo 2 XBL (with everyone having a mic!) are some of the fondest memories I have gaming for 30+ years.

Now this release 25 year layer... ugh. Everything has already been covered but what I really don't understand is how terrible AI does with the enemy movements and animations. This takes you out of immersion WAY before chunky graphics. So much for the promise of AI helping anything I care about. It's only purpose has been to Data farm and manufacture consent.

Just buy Master Chief Collection on PC when its on sale.

I was super excited for Halo ever since its early trailers and magazine articles so I bought the og XBOX and Halo day one at my local Best Buy twenty-five years ago, there was hardly a line and plenty of hardware too. Went straight home to hook up the XBOX to my 27in CRT TV and played Halo for hours, loved it! Halo didn't have online play available but I recall people hacking ways to make online play work using VPNs or something too.

I may buy the "new" Halo but will wait for a STEAM sale first.

It is okay, I still find it annoying as I did with the originals. Sprinting helps and makes the game go by quicker. There is some momentum for movement. That is where the improvements end. It is quite repetitive, the audio ques and mixing are still bad, level design is boring and very repetitive. Enemies are still bullet sponges with no real reaction except a generic stun and pause state. Vehicle controls still suck. You can tell it was designed around sub 30 frame rates and thumb sticks. I would have hoped they would have done a better job modernizing it as Halo CE felt quite bad back then, IMO, and feels worse now. It isn't horrible but it is one of the most overrated games I've ever played.

AI seems to have the occasional quirk like getting stuck or being a bit more deaf compared to the original games. But otherwise it is Halo CE, just with quicker movement around the copy/paste halls which is necessary.

The original idea for Halo sounded better before it became an X-Flop exclusive. I thought it was a PC game in early development?

Then it came out and was so over hyped, and couldn't hold a candle to current era PC shooters.

A first person shooter with a controller LOL

Co-op by hooking up 2 TVs near each other? Uh what is this the 1970s? PC games like Quake 2 CTF had way better Co-op multiplayer, and you didn't need to be in the same room together.

I think originally it was going to be a third person game made for MAC and PC.

Being in the room together is what made it fun. None of my friends were into PC gaming at the time so Quake 2 CTF wasn't option. Connecting xboxes facilitated gaming with my group of friends.

I'm the youngest of 4, my older brothers were PC Gamers from the start in the late 1980s, and I got into PC gaming in the mid -90s with Doom and then Quake and Eye of the Beholder and Heritec, etc...so I grew up on shooters being keyboard+mouse only. Back then controllers were only for games like Super Mario Bros.

When Halo came out, I was already building my own custom PC rigs and the X-Box was not even on my radar at all, it seemed like a cheap PC., so I had ZERO interest in Halo, as I was already playing Doom and Quake and Half Life on the PC and CoOp and multiplayer was already easily done PC to PC over the Internet.

So the thought of lugging over a heavy TV to my friends house to game together just seemed insanely stupid and pointless as like I said the Internet was already around a while, plus CoOp was big on PC games.

But that's just my opinion and situation back in the day.

Halo started out as a Mac game, they were thinking RTS, before switching it to an fps.
Then they got bought by Microsoft so it was going to be on PC.
They had that e3 video on the PC Gamer demo disc.
Then MS started making Xbox so they said Xbox exclusive.

All this talk about old console coop and Halo dev history almost makes me want to open MCC or even dig out the xbox and CE disc from the closet for the sake of nostalgia. Even with all of the (accurate and deserved) criticisms of the original, it was an icon of that era.

It isn't as though I dislike the game, but a glorified visual upgrade and basic gameplay tweak (sprint) aren't selling me on buying something I have (twice). Kind of evokes the same apathy in me as the Oblivion remaster for basically those same reasons.

Man, I thought I was the only one. Halo was a pretty cool game and launch title for the Xbox in 2001, and I have fond memories of playing through the co-op campaign with a friend. But that’s where it ends for me. Never played any of the sequels, and honestly have had no real desire to play the high-res PC version because in my eyes the game didn’t hold a candle to other contemporary shooters at the time - many of which had already been out for years at that point.

There are certainly worse franchises that Microsoft could’ve hitched their wagon to back then…I was just kinda over Halo after the first iteration and just never shared in the hype that carried it through several sequels.

Back when it released, Halo 2 for PC had a sinister copy-protection. When pirating, despite bypassing the disc protection, you'd get through the first level/mission, but by the time you get to the second the difficulty was amped up so much your progress halted. This was back when games were physical media, mind you. It was the first time I went "Huh, I guess they thought of that." Rather clever of the developers.

Halo 2 also required Windows Vista and "Games For Windows Live" which was eventually discontinued so you couldn't even play Halo 2 on PC (without pirating) until The Master Chief Collection came to PC.

There were so many problems with Games for Windows Live that you couldn't play Halo 2 even when the game first came out on PC.

50 dollars for a pretty version of a campaign I played 20 years and have beaten dozens of times is a tall ask. If the game had full on matchmaking multiplayer with an updated version of the original maps, i'd pay 50 bucks.
I agree.
I pretty much thought the same way about Oblivion Remastered, but peeps everywhere was claiming it was the best thing since sliced bread, and it was hot garbage with a multitude of bugs and issues and will never be fixed, yet there are massive amounts of Elder Scrolls fans that don't have a clue that it's fubar'ed and are still buying it in droves still till this day. And at least they tried to be true to the OG.

The only reason most people went out and bought Halo: Campaign Evolved, was the simple fact it was a "new Halo game" and they didn't have a clue and were not in the know like I said.
There are a lot of Halo fans out there that do not read reviews and are not informed enough to know that this is not worth the $50.

I bought oblivion because I hadn't played it since 2006 or 7, definitely a big mistake. Runs like hot garbage, I got tired of it pretty quickly and put it down because it just didn't work very well. Settings don't even matter, the game stutters like crazy. It's never getting fixed either.

I loved MP Halo 2 and 3 in high school with my buddies, but I also find the campaign a slog to get though. I got the MC bundle a couple years ago and lost all interest halfway through Halo 2.
