After a decade of unfulfilled promises about driverless vehicles, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hyped the company’s Cybercab concept on Thursday night, showing off a low, silver two-seater with no steering wheels or pedals...Musk offered no details about exactly where Tesla plans to produce the cars, but said consumers would be able to buy a Tesla Cybercab for below $30,000...he said the company hopes to be producing the Cybercab before 2027

Musk said the Cybercab and Robovan would employ inductive charging, meaning these autonomous vehicles could roll up to a station to recharge, with no plugging in required...The electric-car maker also unveiled a second vehicle, a Robovan, designed to shuttle up to 20 people at a time

Musk seems to be losing it… more conspicuously, I mean.

We still don’t have true self-driving or the Roadster, and now Musk is making claims about robotaxis with vague release windows that could easily prove unrealistic if regulators have even modest concerns.

If it wasn’t already clear, Tesla needs new leadership. Musk is alienating many of his customers just through his politics; the Cybercab isn’t helping.

Well a Taxi or a Van could be loaded down with ugly sensors and antennas that would turn away a consumer.

These aren’t for people, they are for Uber, Lift, and UPS.

And I suppose for people who don’t otherwise have access to a license, visually impaired and such.

no steering wheel, no pedals?...what if there's an emergency and a human needs to take control?...there's no emergency failsafe?

I think Musk is thinking too far into the future...this is not something that's going to be ready in 2026...it looks like some sci-fi future from Blade Runner

He's the hype man for an infrastructure company. The EV bubble will pop and he'll move along. He's already pivoting to hyping politics.

That being said, I don't even trust regular taxi drivers, Uber and the like.

It's probably a testing platform for trucking more than anything else. Think of this like '90s-'00s Amazon. Remember they used to be a used book store? It's about planting seeds today that will flourish into different industries tomorrow.

The key to successful ADAS should not be that the level 5 systems are infallible, but that the probability of a crash is significantly lower than human drivers and in the event of a crash the damage and injuries will be less sever. Not trusting AI and instead trusting humans to be better drivers doesn't make sense. The data should be the answer.

It all looked cool to me. The robots especially. I highly doubt any of it will be a available in that timeline though.

It's nice to see a big company actually willing to push boundaries and build futuristic stuff.

The idea is great
However if you ever used Tesla's autopilot you know what I am talking about. It's kinda clunky and not really designed to be driven around 90% idiots on the road. It works nearly perfect on the highway, though
These things take time. Everybody said the Cybertruck was impossible, but it's here on the road
The Robotaxi looks great and can't wait to see one on the road

I mean the cybertruck is barely on the road

tesla is not exactly known for their quality assurance and the cybertruck is the most egregious release yet

I don't exactly have much faith in this

This is just to keep the investor hype going, but it seems to have failed as Tesla stock immediately dropped 10%.

None of these products is viable in the form it was presented. The robot that can slowly shuffle forward is pointless garbage, the bus with no windows is pure dystopian nightmare fuel. The robotaxi is just a fancy box until they figure out FSD, which spoiler alert : Not going well.

All to deflect attention from the roadster which is completely MIA, not even working prototypes exist probably. Or the Semi, that is seemingly no closer to mass production while they are still cagey about its load capacity, reliability and range.

You would think it should have more clearance for snow rocks and including potholes.

Every time I see self-driving cars I see companies trying to do a lot of computing on an anemic computer. Not just Tesla, everyone.

It makes me very leery of self-driving anything from anyone.

Why? Explain your reasoning?

Most of these models will be something like an opencv model that is highly optimized ONNX for the hardware it's running on. Anyone building these has a ton of ISO safety certifications that ensure the system can respond quickly enough for the controls to react.

it's actually a genius nostalgia play by Tesla so when you invariably hear this thing grind on a pebble or mulch a small dog, you can reminisce thinking about the front of your 88 Camaro scraping if you didn't go over a speed bump at the right angle or had the audacity to use a driveway with an incline

My money says there absolutely will be FSD self propelled vehicles in 5 years (i choose those words carefully). I am not claiming those will be regular cars and trucks, don't misunderstand me here.

The tech built for that will transfer to other ODDs. My money says 15 years we will have FSD cars from most manufacturers.

So both the Cybertruck and now this similar design are showcased without their side view mirrors. They look better without them but they should have made them tuck in flush if this car will eventually have them when not in use at least since it ruins the concept car look otherwise.

(This is based on my assumption that it will support a driver-assisted mode but I suppose we'll see if it's indeed restricted regionally)

given the actual price on every single past release gonna be more like 45K

negative the computational power required does not exist and not likely to by then either

These types of thought processes by normal people that don't even have 1% of Elons success always baffle me.

Regulations, liability, something something dumb people, liability.

Cybertruck is doing just fine. It doesn't matter if you hate it if the car is selling.

People will approach it with the same logic they do with flying- they freak out over one accident and would prefer to drive, even though statistically speaking flying is far safer than driving, and our sensationalist media plays no small role in this. It will be the same thing here, one accident is all it takes for people to freak out and be blown up in sensationalist media.

I was reading an article from some Chinese firm about “driverless cars” a while ago and they determined that if automatic vehicles could talk to one another, they could lower speed limits by something like 20kph, reduce accidents, while simultaneously reducing drive times just because they could do away with most stopping intersections and just keep things moving so the vehicles would all negotiate their pathing and collision detection based on their destinations.

Like automatic driving paired with registered flight controls sort of thing.

Obviously an information grab if you have people literally telling you where you are going at any given time but interesting all the same.

Road vehicles have been self propelled since the time of horse drawn carts.

That makes absolutely no difference self driving still needs to do the exact same thing regardless of what the vehicles look like.

ODDs? Optical disk drives?! Other manufacturers like Mercedes are already ahead of Tesla they just don't oversell and advertise their self driving tech falsely.

Not everyone gets fired from a company for being dumb and still gets a golden parachute.
Yours is basically the same non argument that you can only criticize the service at a restaurant if you run a better restaurant.
Regulations, liability, something something dumb people, liability.
Yeah fuck regulations, why not allow tesla to use humans as crash test dummies? Oh wait they already do by releasing their buggy FSD into general population.
Cybertruck is doing just fine. It doesn't matter if you hate it if the car is selling.
The Roadster is also selling despite not even existing. Elon fans will buy into anything he sells.

At this point I don't particularly care about Musk's endless hype train. Waymo is already operating in multiple cities that I live near or frequent regularly, and they work astonishingly well. Further, they've gotten this far safely, quietly and without endless hype. There's no need to wait for Tesla when Waymo is already doing today much of what Tesla will be unable to deliver before 2030.

I mean, at any point, someone who really believes this could test it at a smaller size: a bunch of RC-car-sized autonomous vehicles in a room with a small network of streets, demonstrating the ability for a group of them to traverse intersection(s) without the need for something like red lights. I haven't seen anything about anyone doing it yet, though. (I will admit it's possible it happened and I haven't heard about it, though.)

For major bonus points, I'd like to see, say, a hundred of them able to continuously navigate around a mesh of streets that contained multiple intersections of different geometry, which is the bare minimum you'd need to see in the real world for this to be even minimally viable.

I'd love to see it, but not too soon, because that's when the totalitarians will start talking about not letting people drive, but I don't want to soapbox this.

Here in NJ you see Cybertrucks everywhere.

Musk is still fairly young- 53 years old so he has at least another 20 years of good health to see his visions become reality

There's a ton of demos of limited ODD matrix fully autonomous self propelled robotic vehicles.

(for anyone lacking intelligence, yes you need to say self propelled)

(I am amazed at people unwilling to do even pre-k levels of research on things I am posting, and still feel qualified to make comments.

Ima let you finish, and that video was cool, but now bring about 20 more of those RC cars out and let's see them go through a 4-way intersection from all four directions and autonomously change speed so none need to stop. I'll edit my post to be clearer about that.

Yeah, if you're wanting autonomous swarms, we have examples of that. Different domain, but we will most certainly get there if there are not existing demonstrations of that.

(am specially looking for open source examples that are outside of my specific area of work to maintain privacy)

The bigger picture, not spoken here, is certain automotive industry players are focusing towards the buzzword idea of “mobility”. The thought of vehicle ownership or having it stationary parked during the night or day is not what the industry has in mind. These players are focusing solely on moving people and objects from Point A to Point B. Eventually, vehicle ownership will be a minority, and perhaps the ability of driving as well. Vehicle leasing is a step towards this future, and self-driving is accelerating the prospect.

Many here do not like this viewpoint, so do I. Majority may not really care how they get from A to B.

Elon is forcing Tesla into this mindset because if this path is not followed, they may not be able to compete at a future point. It is disappointing the next product is not the more affordable $30k model.

He has been promising FSD comes in 1 year since 2012. So if 1 year = 12+ in Musk hype years, then 20 years is not that much.

It's not some of them....

They're all after a recurring revenue model and a solution as a service model. And it goes beyond just your vehicle.
