42" OLED MASTER THREAD

Glad you're enjoying it!

I disabled mine months ago. No ill effects so far. YMMV depending on how you use it ( the usual caveats apply ) but I'm not worried about it.

Several of us have disabled it and at least speaking for myself, I haven't read or seen any regrets about it nor any reports of burn-in or noticeably increased wear.
Same for me, not looking back.

Perhaps there is some wear going on but it's really hard to tell. I disabled ASBL within the first week of having my CX since it annoyed me too much on the desktop, but I also had it permanently set to HDR mode which means OLED light maxed out at 100 at all times. Now after over 2.5 years my max brightness with BFI on is only 77 nits whereas it used to do 120 nits at the same settings when it was brand new. It's possible that disabling ASBL had nothing to do with it and rather me having it on OLED light 100 for 2.5 years is the actual underlying cause. What doesn't make sense to me though is that the HDR peak brightness seems to be completely unaffected as it can still do ~750 nits for highlights and that's what it could do since day 1 so there is no wear down going on in that regard.

As OLEDs wear brightness reduces.
To achieve higher brightness more power is fed to them, there is headroom (a 25% power buffer) to allow for this which wears down over time.

The unchanged peak output is still possible because the buffer allows more power to be fed to the OLED to compensate, keeping brightness up.
The other major limiting factor is heat which is used to define when the power fed to them must be reduced, to prevent even more excessive wear/ageing or death.
For a moment the peak output can be maintained but not for long.
Sustained output suffers because more heat is produced now at the same brightness of old causing limiters to kick in earlier, reducing brightness.
At this stage the 25% buffer is still not expended, but the above problems will get worse until ...

Some day you may find the 25% buffer has been used up, at which point, those OLEDs that have reached 25% higher power will start to dim because the TV will not allow more power to be fed to them.
This will result in what looks like burn in.
The truth is those OLEDs were burned in a long time earlier but the 25% buffer hid it, allowing the display to show no difference.
Once the buffer is depleted there is no way back other than putting up with it or defeating the safety algorithms and risking severe damage or even fire.

Are you a member over at AVS Forum? You could run this by them and see what they think. Some of their big OLED threads dwarf ours, and I'd bet out of that sample size you'd stand a greater chance of finding someone who has used their set in a similar manner. Just a thought!

About to pull the trigger on a 42" c2, 4080, and z690 platform upgrade.... first large upgrade in years... I reckon I should add a capable hdmi cable too. The c2 is g-sync compatible? sorry TLDR on the thread... reading backwards now heh..

C2 is G-Sync compatible, I had a left over cable that I tried to use at first but got constant image skips. I ended up getting some cable on Amazon that "says" 8K and it has worked great.

Thank you... all of my hdmi cables are multiple years old at this point.. adding a new cable to my cart.

Does anyone see this? I have it at times. Even just using the desktop. Long/short it's not a cable issue. I've gone through all of that. ;) I was playing a game yesterday and I even had the signal drop outright for a second and then come back.

Latest drivers, firmware, etc. It's random. It's definitely a "TV-PC" issue. I have VRR turned off. It doesn't happen all the time but if you do a search for "LG C2 flickering" you will get a LOT of hits. Too many. I'm one of them.

Overall I'm very happy with this TV but this is a shame just like having an optical audio out that's a POS that I had to bypass.

Often its a cable issue. Do you have a different one to try?

May want to wait for the C3 to drop. Even if you don't want the C3 or want to pay it's "new" pricing vs the older TV, the older TV's will also like drop in price.

Thanks much … but i already pulled the trigger here… I can always upgrade I reckon. Damn the picture is pretty amazing on this display. Waiting on the rest of my gear to test 4k 120hz …

It's definitely not a cable issue. I've used several. People tell me it's a Gsync issue. Turn it off. Turn it back on. It's a "random" quirk.

The flicker problem is Nvidia G-Sync. The solution is to turn off G-Sync and then turn on again. At least that's what I do on my C2.

This was some advice I ran across and it worked. (When the problem shows up.)

I got one of those "8K" cables and looks like everything is working with g-sync and 4k 120hz. Sons of the Forrest looks stunning.. wow. Thanks again.

4 years of LG C Series OLEDs (CX, C1, C2, C3) and there is basically ZERO improvements to the picture quality. Still the same HDR brightness and still 120Hz. LG is starting to look as stagnant as Intel during the 10 year quad core period.

Makes me feel that my CX 48" has some real good value to it though!

But yeah, even just bumping the refresh rate to 144 Hz would be something. At this point the G3 is basically the only new LG OLED worth buying, otherwise just buy the cheapest CX-C2 you can find in the size you prefer. Or jump ship to Samsung S95B and suffer their UI. Or Sony equivalent, which you will pay through the nose to own usually.

Makes me wonder if LG has hit the limits of their current manufacturing capabilities and has to pivot to new tech as MLA alone does not seem to quite do it.

My understanding is the big changes on C3 are all in processing and processing power. The algorithms are much better and negative effects are minimized. I suspect that there was a lot of nuance done. That won't change what happens at a macro level (testing) but should make the overall experience nicer. And things like webOS are supposed to be much faster with much better app switching.

In terms of panel, my understanding is it's the same panel as C2. If you're wondering about upgrading, then you need not apply. If you're buying a new TV today and they both costed the same the C3 would be worth having.

The problem is, they don't. Most will see the C2 at $900 being a much better buy than the C3 at $1400. In 7-8 months (say, Black Friday Time?), the prices will be much closer, in which case definitely get the C3. We're all pretty impatient it seems with the tech getting better, but display tech has always moved slow. Likely due to the cost of manufacturing making it so that break even points take a lot of units to be sold.

If you want the best with all the display improvements, you'll just have to pay for them. The G3 is supposed to convincingly win in all categories over the S95b and A95k. Of course who knows what Samsung and Sony will release in response. At least for the time being LG has the top end OLED display.

Is OLED BFI dead? FWIW...I looked for signs of life regarding the current generation and upcoming products and didn't find any...

Edit: Some context: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/20...yers-thread-faq-no-price-talk.3264219/page-23
"Vincent confirms 120 Hz BFI is not returning in this year's models."
The problem is probably due to higher wear at the same brightness.
When the OLED is on for 1/2 the time it must shine twice as bright to look the same.
The relationship of wear vs light power output is not linear, using BFI will cause higher wear at the same light level.
With the modern brighter OLEDs BFI becomes even more of a problem.

been reading through this thread for the most part to try to see what the recommended 42/48" OLED monitor to buy is. Sounds like i need to stay away from the following

ASUS PG42UQ

ASUS PG48UQ

is the LG 48GQ900-B safe to purchase?? Im sure there are other large format OLED monitors you recommend?? Please can you let me know! I appreciate it. It would be just my luck to make this expensive purchase and come to find out that it has several known issues... Thanks!

All of these use the same LG panels. The differences are in how that particular manufacturer implemented the hardware/software to go with that panel.

If you don't absolutely know you need the monitor specific features, just buy a cheap LG C2 42" while they are still available (before they get replaced by the more expensive C3 that brings nothing to the table).

Wow, looks like I'm ahead of everybody with a C6!

Still love this TV but it's sad 3D didn't actually become viable for home use until 4k panels came out. Maybe the new Avatar will result in new 3D tv's again. *Crossing fingers* though likely not happening =P

I agree, 3D with ultra thin, lightweight and very cheap polarised glasses was just amazing but was often too low res on a 1080p display, meaning awful shutter glasses were the main option sold.
Sadly that killed it off before 4K could get a grip, NVidia dropping driver support was the final nail in the coffin.
We 'just' missed out, it would have succeeded if it started with 4K res.

but are monitors based on that panel good or bad? what would you choose? is 899$ about the going price for the 42" C2?

The monitors are bad mainly due to firmware issues. The C2 doesn't have any weird firmware problems AFAIK. $899 is pretty good but it did drop to as low as $799 and probably will hit that price again once the C3 lands in stores, but if you can't wait and want something now then $899 is still an attractive price.

is there a big difference from 120hz that the C2 has vs the 138Hz the actual "monitor" has? and C2 only has HDMI where the monitor has displayport... any issue there or not at all?? Thanks for al the help so far!

I would say that all comes down to the individual. I myself cannot see a huge difference between 120Hz and 144Hz, but from 120Hz to 160Hz I definitely do notice it. 138Hz may or may not be a noticeable upgrade to you personally. HDMI won't be a problem as long as your GPU has HDMI 2.1 so you would need an RTX 30/40 series or Radeon RX 6000/7000 series, otherwise you wouldn't be able to get 4K 120Hz 10Bit 4:4:4 chroma with VRR.

might go get me either the 42 or 48" C2 tomorrow @ MC... you might have talked me into it! I do some gaming, like Metro Exodus and FC6, but mostly just internet stuff and forums! This monitor would look beautiful for sure. Im guessing enable options like "hide taskbar" and "hide desktop icons" would be good ideas to do for an OLED screen? and yes, I have a 4090

I don't notice the difference between 120Hz and 144Hz either. I do notice an improvement in motion clarity from 120Hz to 175Hz, and from 175Hz to 240Hz. The new 240Hz OLED monitors from LG are pretty awesome in terms of responsiveness and motion clarity, but weak on brightness, and the 45" one has unacceptably low PPI.

I think the best approach right now if possible is to get a good large IPS LCD for productivity, and an OLED for gaming and video, so two setups. My personal favorites are the LG 40WP95C 5k2k monitor for productivity, and the Alienware AW3423DW for the other stuff. A 42" OLED is ok too, but I find the 34" QD-OLEDs to be better overall.

It wouldn't be something that would make me pick the monitor version which probably costs 2x or more what the C2 42" goes for these days.

With the TV you will need to turn it off from the remote (or explore some workarounds like ColorControl) but to me that's a total non-issue.

Man the system shock demo looks absolutely sick on oled. Wow.
Yup. Your pic doesn't even do it justice (none ever do), but many of us know what you're talking about. It's a game-changer. I've been using LCD monitors since the early 2000s (and CRTs before that), and OLED is on another level entirely.

Yeah I know pics of it just don't come near to doing it justice.. I too had numerous CTRs and LCDs.. and have used a TV for a PC display twice before (Westy 37" and Sammy 40" ju6700)... Having just transitioned from the Alienware 1900R 34" I am loving the extra real estate and I didn't figure the display would be my favorite part of the recent upgrade I did but my god.. the colors and the blacks.. it _is_ on another level. It looks delicious. I'm really glad I got the OLED and not the Samsung Ark (miniLED).... I mean waiting for the c3 might have been a thing but oh well. There's always something better around the corner.. heh.

edit: been mesmerized by this video on this display...

is there any difference between the 42" and the 48" C2 Models? both are gsync? do they both have the "EVO" version of panel?

If you guys were waiting for the C3 and wanted to disable ASBL for desktop use. You better run out and buy a C2 now because LG has now seemingly made it impossible to disable ASBL from the service menu on the C3. First they take out 120Hz BFI and now this, the C series just keeps getting worst each year lmfao.

Man that really sucks. Seems like they really want to stop people from using the TVs as monitors because the ASBL is way too annoying when it starts to dim while you are just reading an article for example.

Exactly. The C series just keeps getting worst and worst every year. Without the ability to disable ASBL that completely rules out any future LG OLED TV for me as a PC display even if they come out with a 32" 144Hz+ model.
