Official PS5 Thread

I got lucky during a Best Buy drop and was able to buy at MSRP. I wasn’t trying all that hard, I clicked the link quite a bit after the drop started and just sat there waiting for it to be available for purchase. I don’t care if people pay inflated prices, it’s their money to spend.

Nice job. I don't care, either... I just don't have the stomach to do it. ;)

I’ve bought 2 from GameStop and my friend bought 2 from Walmart. Really looking forward to mlb the show 21 on there

I’m currently waiting on this hard drive expansion update to throw another nvme in it, also would love some VR info. They’ve shown the controllers but not much info.

Been waiting on that hard drive expansion for 5 months now bro lol.

Fucking sony taking forever. They mentioned something about it being ready by summer.

They need to hurry up. I just downloaded mlb the show 21 and I’ve only got 50gb left. In other news my damn X button is messed up on my controller that came with the console that I just bought March 17th. Can’t wait to ship it back to Sony. Sheesh

About time. I don't care much about adding more storage. I don't it worth it to spend $200 for 1tb of storage atm. It will be a couple years before those drove drop in price. I don't need to have every game stored on the ps5.
Prolly same here. I just got a $89 WD Passport 4TB external today for this because my 2TB is full and I just figured out that you can't use more than one external at a time on the PS5, else I was just going to hook up another 750GB external SSD I have. Would be super nice if Sony/MS just let us use our existing NAS though so we don't have to have a separate dedicated drive for the consoles. I don't see that happening though.

I only have 2TB left on my 8TB external. Still, I can fit 3 more games on the internal drive now that I can move Cold War off of it.

Personally I am more interested to know, when they do enable the NVME, will that let the PS5 still work if the built in one dies? If not then they can't bring the NVME feature out fast enough so I can minimize the amount or writes the PS5 is doing to the internal drive.

Is that an externally powered 3.5" drive? I don't see any portable 2.5" drives over 5 TB last I saw and I didn't want another power adapter for my drive since I move it between my PS5 and PS4 Pro sometimes and also sometimes travel with a console.

Highly doubt the console will work if the internal drive fails, given that most, if not all of the OS is on the drive. I also highly doubt you'll ever wear the drive out before something else fails on the mobo, esp considering you're not writing to the drive as much as a PC drive and modern SSDs typically far exceed their expected life span. At least personally, I'll be replacing this console with the inevitable Pro console in a few years anyways, so I'm not worrying about drive failure on it before then.

Blah blah game conservation blah blah.

At least we can move PS5 games to external storage now. That helps me a lot already until we can add another SSD into the console.

Wtf. I was hype til I read the article. I’ve been watching nvme prices like a hawk lately ready to buy a good sized drive to be done with it.
About time. I don't care much about adding more local storage. I don't it worth it to spend $200 for 1tb of storage atm. It will be a couple years before those drove drop in price. I don't need to have every game stored on the ps5.
I’ve had quite a few chances to snag 1tb nvme Gen 4 drives for under $200 on amazon I’d rather have the stuff on a nvme then on a external that I have to move shit back and forth when I want to play it.

I’m not that worried about the internal drive dying on me at all. I have my main games that get played on there and I don’t really download other stuff since the internal drive is so damn small. I do have a ton of ps4 games that I wouldn’t mind playing some times but don’t want to buy a external drive that only plays ps4 stuff or shuffles ps5 games back and forth on.

Im curious how long it takes to move a ps5 game to the external drive and vice versa. If you’ve got some spare time and could post results I’d love to know. Since they say it’s faster than redownloading your games.

I'll be transferring a bunch tonight when I get home and will try to time some of the transfers.

Yes. This is the one I have:

If I remember correctly it took my Series X 5-7 minutes to move a 50GB game from the internal SSD to my external 7200 RPM drive. It will probably the same on the PS5. On my internet connection speed it would take 50-60 minutes to download a game that size. I have the WD_BLACK 12TB for my Xbox, though, which is a lot faster than the one above that I have for my PlayStation. It will often get the full rated 180-200 MB/s when moving around games.

DF's video on transfer speeds.

I haven't transferred any PS5 games yet. But did transfer all my PS4 games to my new external HDD. Here's my transfer findings:

TLoU Remastered - 39.1GB (I), 38.56GB (E)
External SSD to internal SSD - 4:55
Internal SSD to external HDD - 8:49

39.1GB = 40038.4MB in 529 seconds = 79.69MB/s

The two file sizes are slightly different depending on if the game is on an internal or external drive for some reason.

Then I transferred a bunch of PS4 games over and got this:

360GB = 368640 MB in 1h29m33s or 5373 seconds = 68.61MB/s

I'm sure the drive is capable of much faster speeds than that too, so the bottleneck is the OS transferring the data it seems. I wouldn't expect PS5 game transfers to differ any really. But I didn't have time to do any more before crashing. I'll transfer some more tomorrow though.

I was able to buy the PS5 plus accessories direct from SIE. I originally signed up for the pre-order but decided not to go with it at that time due to lack of funds. Last week they sent an email with an invite. Jumped right on it last Thursday & everything is arriving today.

Looking forward to playing all of the upgraded games & whenever HZD2 gets released. The part I'm not looking forward to is the PS4 to PS5 transfer & the boatload of downloading I'll have to do.

Edit: Delivered. End of the work day can't come any faster...

Just a reminder that Horizon Zero Dawn is free right now on the PS Store.
I forgot al about this and never played it on ps4 I’ll download it while I’m at work tonight.

Have any of you had issues with your ps5 controllers? I had to send one back due to the X button sticking, never spilled anything on it or even eat while I play and even sprayed air around/behind the button to see if something was stuck in there with no luck.

Had mine since November and no issues so far.

I’ve got 2 consoles and 3 friends with a console. I’m the only who’s had this issue with one of the controllers. Two of my friends have stick drift that they sent out and sony replaced.
My bad controller came with the console I bought March 17th

No issues with my controller either. You're probably applying too much torque with those bear mitts of yours.

I mainly play mlb the show and the swing button is x, I’ve been playing this game on ps4 for years and never had this issue. Last year I had 1,500 hours played.

Crazy how it’s been 5 months and people still can’t get PS5’s without paying $200-$400 over MSRP through StockX/Craigslist etc

People can get them, just have to be ready when it goes in stock. Most people don’t want to do the work to get one then complain about not having one.
I have a friend like this. I got another one today and I’m gonna list it online for $600 and wait for him to show up to meet. When he gets there I’ll say something derogatory to him and take $550 from him. He can buy me lunch for getting his ps5

I've been trying to get one since it came out. I follow stock trackers on Twitter and Discord. I've taken time off work for stock days to try and snag one, only to have it be out of stock from the moment I clicked "Add To Cart". They're incredibly hard to acquire, so please don't act like hard work is the problem. You've just been very fortunate. It's mind-numbingly frustrating having to compete with bots. I'm just going to overpay at this point.

Yeah PS5 are seeminly non existent in shops over here, I got an easier time getting an RTX 3080 then a PS5 or S-box series X. One of the big e-tailers works with a waiting list based on his notify me list, so who knows how long it will still take at this point, some of our big news outlets thinks we wont see any decent stock b4 end of year and I'm even doubting that

The external drive feature is crazy weird. On a fairly fast external nvme drive, I'm getting horrible slow write speed but fast read/loading speed. Sony is confusing with their technology implementations. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future but the internal secondary nvme feature unlock during the summer will probably be a better bet.
