Mafia: Definitive Edition

Never played the original but I liked Mafia DE. Mafia 2 has different controls and looks dated

It is okay. Graphics are pretty good, except the faces which aren't great but not horrible either. Gameplay is dated, which works in some ways and doesn't in others. The shooting is typical 3rd person crap, and feels lifeless. Enemies seemingly have a lot of HP and can often take a good 9-10 shots of .45 and still keep on going despite ammo being scarce in some sections. AI is also pretty dumb and it plays like whach a mole, with them popping their heads out and emptying their weapon at you before going back into cover. Essentially, think of those bad 3rd person cover shooters of the early 2000s. Given this is a remake of an old game though I suppose this is to be expected.

Driving is actually pretty good on the most realistic setting, but forget about the race level. Turn the difficulty to easy for that, then turn it back up. It is a shame the shooting feels so terrible because they did well with the driving.

What works well? The game is a respectable length at 12 or so hours. It lasts as long as it needs to be. Most modern games aren't much better gameplay wise, but drag on for 30-50 hours. This ends just before it gets tedious and tiring. Little to no "side" content. This means everything you do has a purpose, and each mission has dialogue and context. You know what you're doing and why. You don't need to spend hours of time looking through sticks, rocks, and crap to drop from your inventory Witcher/Assassin's Creed/lazy game design style. And it plays so much better because of it.

I'd say it is a good game overall. Never played the original.

They actually removed several hours or pretty decent side quests when making the DE. Probably out of laziness.

Have you played the original? There weren't any side-quests. At least none that I remember. It was all about the story.

Apparently they cut out a bit of content out of the original for this 'streamlined' remaster, along with some other questionable choices. Pretty disappointing really. Guess I'll just play the original again.

I did, there were unskippable sidequests not directly tied to the story, those are cut from the game. Like the Lucas Bertone missions. Most of the driving only missions.

That is too bad then. Driving is surprisingly good and the manual option is a nice change. Could've put more effort into some other things in additional to re-adding lost missions. Things like the slides not locking back on pistols is just lame in 2020.

I never played the original and still found this decent enough, but clearly they could've done better.

I have and there were. That being said they I recall them being more side activities, more than missions, they were most certainly not story driven, so in that I may have been incorrect.
