I know some people aren't thrilled to run the Thor challenge as we typically focus on the Birthday Challenge in November and then the X-mas Challenge throughout all of December. However, I figured I would make this thread in case others were interested in this challenge as well. This challenge has several stages to it and two categories.

Welcome to the THOR Challenge issued by the international team CRUNCHERS SANS FRONTIERES.

- The THOR Challenge will take place during 5 weeks.
- Ranking on the TRT (Total Run Time) for the first four weeks (THOR Challenge).
- Ranking on the WCG Points for the fifth (THOR Challenge Pure).
- All the World Community Grid active subprojects are in competition.

An awesome competition of crunch where we hope to see registered all the World Community Grid teams!

To celebrate this 5th year, we have decided to increase the volume of teams accessing the weeks of competition.
This 5th THOR Challenge will therefore be more harder, captivating and unpredictable!

Progress of the THOR Challenge Y5 (2020):

- From Monday, September 07, 2020 to Sunday, September 13, 2020.
First week of challenge open to ALL the WCG teams around the World.

- At the end of this first week of challenge, the 50 best teams will be invited to the second week of challenge that will take place from Monday, September 21, 2020 to Sunday, September 27, 2020.
Invitations will be sent to the Captains of the 50 best teams on Monday, September 14, 2020.

- At the end of this second week of challenge, the 25 best teams will be invited to the third week of challenge that will take place from Monday, October 05, 2020 to Sunday, October 11, 2020.
Invitations will be sent to the Captains of the 25 best teams on Monday, September 28, 2020.

- At the end of this third week of challenge, the 10 best teams will be invited to the fourth and final week of the THOR Challenge that will take place from Monday, October 19, 2020 to Sunday, October 25, 2020.
Invitations will be sent to the Captains of the 10 best teams on Monday, October 12, 2020.

The THOR Challenge Pure.
At the end of the third week of the THOR Challenge, 20 teams will be selected to participate in a fifth week of challenge called THOR Challenge Pure.

Three conditions must be fulfilled in order to be eligible for the THOR Challenge Pure:
1- Not to be a team affiliated (directly or indirectly) with a company, association, foundation, government agency, administration, university, college or school.
2- Not to be a team rewarding the distributed computing of its volunteers financially.
3- Have at least participated in the first week of the THOR Challenge (September 07 to September 13, 2020).

Among the eligible teams, the 20 teams that have accumulated the most Total Run Time during the first 3 weeks of challenge will be selected for the 5th week, the THOR Challenge Pure.

- This fifth week will take place from Monday, November 02, 2020 to Sunday, November 08, 2020.
Invitations will be sent to the Captains of the 20 best teams on Monday, October 12, 2020.
The team that wins the THOR Challenge Pure will be the one that have accumulated the most WCG Points in this fifth week.

The teams will be informed of their eligibility to the THOR Challenge Pure at the time of their registration to the THOR Challenge (in this thread and once their registration is official).

Feel free to subscribe to this thread where the organizational details, the monitoring and the results of this FIFTH EDITION (2020) of the THOR Challenge will be published.

Will you have the courage to face this competition?

Reserved for tips and strategies

We are qualifying for the Pure so could go all 5 weeks. The first 4 being based on runtime means you can run old legacy "garbage" and even downclock all your rigs to run slower or more efficient. So, take the opportunity to run more rigs but save more money per rig in the process due to less speed. This is an opportunity for you to put your Android phones/tablets or Pi devices to work as well.

You can even bunker if you would like. I'm sure our friends over at XS are already making preparations. :)

The fifth week will be points based. That is when you will want to return all work ASAP to maximize points. Efficiency be damned that week. lol

You can check our daily team total run time on WCG website based on yesterday's output here.

EXT64 , fastgeek just keep your rigs running WCG ;)

The good news is that we are more than likely going to make it through the 1st week without changing course at all. So, you should have some time to get that bad boy into production. 50 teams will make it through the first week and we tend to have a pretty decent output on a regular daily basis.

I will be switching back to WCG for this in the next couple of days here. Not sure that I am gonna bunker anything but i should at least have a steady stream of pending by go time.
I didn't go over the details with a fine tooth comb but this sounds like any WCG sub project is that correct?

I think there is a PG challenge right before (Sept. 3-6) that I will probably run, otherwise I will definitely be 100% in!

I didn't see anything about this (or could just be blind); but are there any rules against increasing the number of computers after the event starts?

No rules against adding more rigs other than during the first 4 week weekly challenge, the team position ranking is based on total run time. So you can run slow rigs or undervolt/underclock fast rigs to save power, lol.

For now, I think if you keep running what you have now and do nothing, we should qualify for the 3rd week challenge. See Gil post#1 above.

Looks like over 100 teams have signed up so far this year. Only a couple more days before it starts.

I cant find anywhere that states what time Monday it starts. Anyone know?

Being it is an actual WCG challenge, it is most likely at 0:00 UTC time as that would be the beginning of their stats day.

The day 1 result of the 1st week challenge based on run time can be found here. We are at number 8.

52 years? What? How? That's nuts.

They had over 550 users on the team who contributed to WCG today for one thing. Another is the top users on their team got over 6M and 5M points today. I do believe those "users" are actually a pool of users so that could be several hundred more users baked into "Charityengine1 and 2"

OK, I just read this thread in the wee hours of Sept 8 but I'm going out of town for a week. I'll fire up the HTPC and add it to WCG while I'm gone. Server plugs away 24/7 but power is at a premium here so my other rigs are usually idle or off.

edit: wow it's slamming the 6 threads I gave it on my trusty old i7 - 97% ! If we make it to final stage I might throw the Ryzen at it too and work off the laptop for a week but there'll be no Cities Skylines ...

Ok I admit I might be confused. Best strategy, add some now or wait ?

Best strategy, add some now or wait ?
From strategy stand point, as a team we will need more help particularly in the 4th (run time based) and 5th (credit based) week challenge event which will determine the final team standing.

I like to contribute WCG so I've been running since May when OpenPandemics project started irrespective of any challenges. I'll may bring additional rigs starting 3rd or 4th week of the challenge when the weather is cooler.

There is also the WCG birthday challenge starting on Nov 16th and you can start bunkering a week before that. So plenty of WCG events to run during the fall.

Strategy, bring as much as you are comfortable with now. As pututu stated, it will be most important on week 4 and especially week 5. Strategy on how to handle that will have to come when those dates are announced. I would run your most cost efficient stuff for runtime now though as points don't currently matter. Cell phones, tablets, Pi's, etc... are probably the best options from a cost perspective right now. Anything with a heart beat pretty much helps right now. When week 5 hits, you will want to crank things up to overkill and make that breaker box melt.

Being that we are in the top 10 now will mean we have plenty of wiggle room. As the top 50 teams will move to week 2. Then we just need to be in the top 25 which will move us to week 3. To move onto the to 4 we have to make sure we hit the top 10 at the end of week 3. That is where we are going to want to keep a much closer watch on things. So, first 2 weeks you can pretty much just cruise.

Almost perfect timing:p I should hit 1 mil on rosetta in 2-3 days and will be going back to the WCG after that. If there is anything GPU based that falls under this challenge, let me know. Im super casual about all this stuff;)

Nothing GPU yet. They are allegedly still working on getting an application for Open Pandemics but that would have to go through BETA testing before released to the wild. So, unlikely we will see it any time soon.

Week#1, Day 2 standing. We are adding roughly 4-5 years of run time per day.

Woo, movin up! That gridcoin, tho...doubled in the same time. Not sure if I should be impressed... lol

Getting about 2:1 Open Pandemics to MCM, and finishing 8-10 every 3-4hrs, for about 60 tasks/day. I can only up/download while I'm home though, so they're bunched in around midnight.

Giving my little 3400G a workout, for sure.

How does GridCoin pass the 2nd condition? 2- Not to be a team rewarding the distributed computing of its volunteers financially.

sappyse107 , There are two categories. The "Pure" is week 5 and that only allows teams that meet specific conditions. Team Gridcoin does not meet those conditions and so can only go to week 4.

Where are the XS bunkers? You know TAAT will as that is their MO.

Sorry guys, was sitting idle for a bit because I couldn't upload or download this morning. They were doing maintenance or something on the wcg servers I guess.

Yeah...I was caught off guard by it too. For some reason I never saw the notice. Lots of BETA work went out yesterday as well.
