m.2 sata b-key adapter without passthrough cable?

I've been out of the game a little while and this m.2 thing has me scratching my head. I have a B+M key sata m.2 ssd, and I need an adapter card to connect it to a pcie slot. All I'm finding are cards that require a separate sata cable connection to the motherboard for this to work, but my motherboard has no open sata ports. Am I out of luck, or just missing the part that will do what I need? I guess it has to have a sata controller built on to the adapter card?

You will need to find a card with the controller built in. You can't direct connect SATA to PCIe.

I found one card that would cost more than buying an NVMe SSD and adapter, and another that requires an X16 slot but is only X2? (It's also not bootable if that is an issue)

Now, if you want to get wacky, get one of the dual card adapters (M key NVMe and B Key Sata with port), then plug in an m.2 to Sata card on the lower slot, your SSD on the upper slot, and run a 6 inch cable between the ports: PCIe card, M.2 to SATA controller

Alternatively, if you have an open USB3 port, take a look at this enclosure.

Thank you, that's basically what I was afraid of and also extremely helpful to have it confirmed so clearly. I guess this free m.2 drive I got is going to be worth as much to me as it was to them.

Do you really need expensive adapter with 5 slots on it? Are you going to use more than one slot? If yes, then probably it costs what it costs and I can't help here but the following is based on my experience.

If you need only one slot, then typical adapter costs arround 5-10 $ or a bit more for premium product https://www.amazon.com/s?k=NVME+PCIe+Adapter still much less than $40-$60 range.

And if you don't mind Aliexpress and 2 weeks waiting with Aliexpress Standard shipping (+$3), then this item I have recently bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32974085672.html to fit my 128GB nvme m-key ssd taken out from notebook to fit PC with no dedicated nvme slot. I think it is only X2 speed but enough for my needs (1814MB/s read 668MB/s write reported on ssd benchmark).

If your MB bios supports booting from pci-e nvme, then there is no need for more advanced cards. My B150M Pro DH motherboard (without nvme slot) does support booting from pci-e so the installation went without a glitch and now I have fully working system with superior speeds than sata ports can ever deliver and installation went as easy as ever possible - inserted adapter to pci-e slot, did system clone, removed old ssd and the system booted right up from the nvme disk like any regular sata drive, no additional drivers, bios modifications etc. was needed and ssd benchmark reported it correctly as nvme disk with stornvme driver loaded.

The OP was about a SATA m.2 drive, not PCIe/NVMe. Two very different beasts.
