Destiny 2

That triumph sucked, all there is to it.

Have questions if nobody minds.

  1. I seem to be stuck at Score 900. Maybe it is because I'm running through the campaign missions, but nothing higher than that is dropping. Do I need to do anything in particular to get 900+ drops, or do I just need to wade through the campaign and then go find Tier 2 and up activities for the higher level drops?
  2. Every now and then a blue bar appear at the bottom of my screen, typically after I melee or multi-kill, what is this and what does it do?
I just figured out yesterday, that I could drop a healing dome on the ground. Had no idea this ability / mechanic existed. This game sucks at training.

Please do!

Thank you! Joined yesterday, trying to help level the Clan up.

1. Yes, there is a "softcap" in power up to 900 and every drop you get until that point can potentially help get you there. Beyond that, the only way to get powerful gear is activities that specifically state they reward "Powerful Gear". When you open the Director (map of the planets), you should see certain planets/activities with a gold star. If you click through for instance on Vanguard, you'll see 4 options.

Heroic story missions (no reward), Vanguard Strikes (Powerful Reward for completing 3 using the elemental subclass for that week), Nightfall Ordeals (Powerful gear for completions and another for 100k score) and regular Nightfalls (I don't think they reward Powerful anymore but I haven't looked in weeks).

Say you decide to do the three Strikes, when you click that playlist, on the bottom left will be the modifiers which can change. The left most one will be Solar, Arc or Void. Ensure you're on a subclass matching that and complete the 3 strikes to get a powerful reward.

Now, that's one source while doing strikes but there are more and the key to this game is doing more than one thing at a time.

Some activities have vendors associated with them. For Vanguard activities, this is Zavala in the Tower. Before doing the Strikes (or anything really), you should always jump in the tower and be picking up Bounties for activities you plan on completing. So you'll want to pick up all Zavala's bounties, and all the extras you can buy if you have the glimmer, then also stop at Banshee-44 and pick up his bounties.

Both Zavala and Banshee have bounties that can be completed during strikes and both offer a Powerful reward for doing 8 bounties. So while running strikes, you can be working towards 3 Powerful rewards all at once.

The game loop is convoluted for sure but you get the hang of it eventually. TL;DR: Hit the tower, grab bounties, complete bounties while doing the activity, repeat.

2. I think you might mean the XP bar? Possibly?

They say the soft cap is 900, but this isn't really true. You can get powerful rewards pretty easily and go beyond that. Not only that, Prime engrams will always increment upwards anyway. The real soft cap is 950. After that, power is gained by your seasonal artifact and pinnacle gear. Pinnacle gear rewards do go above 950. I'm currently at 964. Gear is 950 with a few 951's and +14 on my artifact.

It depends on your definition of softcap, i suppose. Bungie has always defined the cap before you have to specifically do Powerful Reward drops as the "softcap" even if you get there easily.

Doesn't really matter either way.

Fair enough. I guess they assume that not all players will be able to complete the challenges for the higher end powerful or pinnacle rewards. In some cases, its very hard to do with match made players. The strike for the Leviathan's Breath bow was a pain in the ass with blueberries. With my normal fireteam it was certainly more challenging than it usually is, but accomplished easily and quickly enough.

Good god i wish we were paying attention and just burned the boss down instantly. Allowing him to move then having to endure that boss room was... fun? Don't stop moving!

It's hard to do. And not everyone plans for a hard boss burn in a strike like that. I hit the bastard with a one two punch shotgun and peregrine strike from my Titan and then hit him with my super and a full magazine of my grenade launcher with spike grenades on it. His health didn't move as much as you might think. Normally, if I do that to a strike boss its over very quickly.

To be fair, I did it initially with blueberries and I wasn't sure what they were doing. I saw a machine gun on one of them and I don't recall one hitting his super. The other used Golden Gun with Celestial Nighthawk, but apparently missed his shot. I've been helping my clan through the strike here and there. I may try Divinity on the boss.

Criccio already covered most of it but essentially make sure whatever you are doing rewards powerful gear 1 or higher. For the most part you can see what things offer a challenge \ reward from the gold icon next to destinations in director. Once you click on the destination you should be able to hover over the challenges and see the requirements and reward.

I would make sure at a minimum you are grinding the vex offensive when it resets weekly and playing 3 rounds of gambit as they both reward tier 2 powerful gear. (play the short version of gambit, it's a lot faster in the event your team is getting crushed.) Make sure you visit the appropriate vendors to pick up any related bonties before you start working on any of the challenges.

Don't be afraid to jump into strikes. I was at first but they are just slightly more difficult normal missions with a couple of randoms. No tricks or special mechanics. Nightmare hunts are a bit more difficult but pretty much the same thing, just make sure you save a set of dreambane gear to equip when running them.

I believe we have some clan activities now too. I haven't checked them out yet as I was just finishing for the night when I saw the clan post. I'm hoping to get some grind on tonight.

(also a newb here, started playing just before new light.)

You can equip Dreambane mods on your other gear so you don't have to look at that hideous Dreambane set which often has a very low stat budget. I don't think I've ever seen any pieces that broke 55 stat points. Its basically junk.

Thanks for the help, all... this really is useful.

When you say "Subclass", what exactly does that mean? Do I have to equip all Void gear and weapons to do a Void Strike? I'm using a Warlock, so I thought all his abilities were the purple circle thing (that I've come to understand means Void). Does he have the ability to switch abilities to Arc & Solar? If so, how? I will try and look this up in the interim.

Also, do any 3 Strikes count, or does the activity automatically line up 3? I've only done a couple and they were part of intro missions. Sorry for the stupid questions, so far I've just been running around doing Intro and Campaign missions on each planet, and usually getting distracted and doing the Planet's various activities. There is a lot of the game I have not tried out yet, especially if it is PvP related.

You can switch classes in your inventory screen. Click on the elementral icon above your kinetic weapon slot and it should let you change subclasses.

Pre New Light the game explained all of this. I assume starting everyone at 750 now did away with the pretend leveling that you did when starting from 0.

Coming from Forsaken and jumping into Shadowkeep that armor isn’t too bad statwise up to the 900 point. And as a titan I thought it looked pretty good actually. There is a lot more hideous Titan armor available. Like that Phoenix Strife chest piece. Hideous.

It's hideous. It's a ghetto space suit that looks like it was taken off an astronaut skeleton. The stats on pre-Shadowkeep armor is pretty awful in most cases. You'll see around 36 stat points compared to 48 and above for Shadowkeep armor. Dreambane usually tops out at 48-53. You can get at least as high as 60 without adding any mods to Iron Banner sets, raid armor, crucible armor etc.

You can increase the point value with mods? I'm working on getting that Black Armory set, but its been dropping with low 50 scores. My ironbanner gear is all over 60, but I'd prefer the black armory stuff.

To be clear you're talking about Ornaments for changing the physical look. Basically Destiny's "transmog", though not really. The Dreambane mods are mods used in Nightmare hunts.

So the world of Destiny and the Guardians revolve around 3 elements, Arc, Void and Solar. Those would be the subclasses. Now, within each elemental subclass you can switch up to 3 variations. Lets take your Warlock for example. If you the big purple thing in your character menu right above your primary weapon, it'll take you to your Void configuration screen. This screen is split up into the left and the right. The right will have options for your grenade, your jump and your rift (class ability). The right will have which variation of the Void subclass you want to run. There will be three of these if you have them all unlocked and they're commonly referred to as "top tree, middle tree and bottom tree". You'll see each "tree" has 4 "perks" that you'll want to read through, take note of and experiment with to find out what you like and don't like. Some are more popular than others, PvE vs PvP, etc...

These elements come into play for doing 3 strikes for a powerful reward each week. They're commonly referred to the "singe" or "burn" of the week. For doing the 3 strikes, you just need to make sure you match the elemental subclass. To change it, instead of clicking your Void subclass to adjust it, you'll just need to hover over it and select either the light blue "Arc" or red "solar" icon. Then, you can go into it and select different abilities and variations to suit your activity. Your weapons don't have any effect on this directly (see below) and you can use whatever you want, however you'll want to pay attention to the bounties you pick up if they want you to use something specific.

Regarding weapons, technically speaking each weeks "singe" will affect weapons that match that type which is both good and bad. Weapons that match it will do more damage but enemy weapons that use that element will also do more damage to you. In a Vanguard strike, this doesn't matter all that much but it will later down the line with more challenging content.

You can increase the point value with mods?

Yes, with for example a Resilience mod.

I was referring to using Dreambane mods on your other gear so you wouldn't have to look at the hideous appearance of the Dreambane armor set itself. I was talking about how the armor looked in its base form. You can apply ornaments to it, but New Light players won't have any of the earlier Eververse armor sets which were all turned into ornaments. There are the season pass ornaments but you have to get to level 97 to completely unlock them and they aren't to everyone's taste. I did mention that you can use the Dreambane mods on the gear to do the same job, although a complete set of Dreambane armor is required for one specific quest. Once you've fully loaded into the final mission of the campaign, you can equip whatever you like. Lastly, these mods are useful for nightmare hunts.

I did also talk about the stat budget that typically comes on these armor sets. The Dreambane set is consistently pretty bad. I don't know if it can roll higher stats in the 57-62. 62 being the most I've seen, although I've heard claims of armor dropping as pinnacle rewards that are into the 80's before mods. I don't know if this is true. I haven't seen it. The Dreambane armor, in addition to being ugly as hell on its own, has weak stats on average. For New Light Players, this set may be useful for Shadowkeep, but I wouldn't put any resources into increasing the energy of each piece. I wouldn't upgrade any of it to more than five energy due to the costs. Save your cores etc. for armor with good base stats.

I've done many Pinnacle reward activities and the most i've personally seen base is 64. The most i've heard others getting is 68-69 so 80 is just nuts pre-mods. If that's the case I'm colossally unlucky.

Yeah I used the full set to get the 10 pubs done wearing the Dreambane armor and that's about all I used it for, the stats are quite weak.

Everyone I've seen claim to have base 70 stats on their armor is using a mod to get there. Everytime I inspect them, I see the resilience or strength mods on the gear. I've never seen anything with an actual base stat allocation over 62.

Well, we’re gonna have to agree to disagree (that you have bad taste:p) since the dreambane set isn’t near as ugly as some other sets to me.

And stats wise....well I don’t give a shit. The meta for this game is fucking obnoxious, like all Meta.

(all that said I am running around in Iron Will set with Armamentarium at the moment.)

There’s actually a decent write up on Reddit today about this very thing. According to this guy, 68 seems to be the max base roll for armor based on the API. I’ve personally never seen anything higher than 62, though, and maybe only a handful of pieces at 60+ at all.

I understand more now, fell down a rabbit hole of youtube videos and then did some tinkering in-game. I had never right clicked on any of my gear or abilities, so there was a whole world there I was unaware of. Thanks again, appreciate the help. (y)

Where can I find these daily heroic missions I keep hearing about?

Under Vanguard in the Director but there isn't really anything to gain from them anymore. Prior to this season there was a Powerful Gear reward for doing 3 of them.

Well I har to finish the Campaign before I could do the Vex Offensive, but did that, ran it 3 times, moved my score up 3 (909 now). Did some PvP, because apparently to get the Void SMG everyone recommends, I need 2600 points in there.

Started building a Void Warlock build around the Hunger subset that feeds you health with each kill. Liking that a lot, fits nicely into my play style, that is so long as I have trash mobs to keep me topped off.

More questions:
  1. I have several quests stored up that look to reward Exotics. I've been saving them for Score 950 in the hopes they are awarded at my current level, not the level they were issued at. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
  2. I'm hearing about Tokens I can turn in for rank, are these the items we give to Vendors to increase our reputation with them, or something else? My inventory is full of stuff I have no clue what to do with. I know a lot of it is crafting materials, but I don't know what I should be trading off and what I should be hanging onto.
Thanks again for the help. Outter Worlds just came out, so I may be distracted for a bit. I shant be long (most likely). :p

There’s actually another part to earning Recluse (the void smg) that no one ever mentions: win 100 crucible matches. No one ever mentions it because it’s retroactive, and basically anyone that has played for a bit already had that box checked. Since you’re new, though, it definitely affects you. Also, the 2100 points you need are Glory (aka ranked pvp). Make sure you are doing the ranked matches and not just the unranked ones. Unranked games award Valor instead, and they won’t count toward the quest.

As far as exotic quests go, they will give you the item at your current level. It’s not a big deal, though. You can always infuse exotics that you like up to max level once you’re there, so I wouldn’t worry about waiting until then if you don’t want.

Tokens are rewarded from Crucible and Vanguard activities. You can turn them into Shaxx and Zavala, respectively, to get a random armor or weapon that is slightly below your level. Each of them has their own loot pool. It’s more for trying to get better rolls on items than actual leveling.

Edgewise and Exit Strategy done. Those are grinds...

Now, on to Randy's. I'm not looking forward to this but the Undying title is only available this season and I think it's going to take me about that long. Only thing I have left for the seal besides the 3 Undying Mind kills which aren't available yet.

To add to this, some of the exotic quests can be a bit of a grind. Even if you wanted to wait till you were closer to 950 it would be worth it to start making progress now.

That is a bummer. I will likely never get it then. Besides being in my 50's and too slow to truly compete, I'm using a 60Hz 4k monitor, so my hardware does not favor twitch shooters. I'm sure I could work my way up to the middle of the pack in time, was fairly decent at HL, UT, BF & CoD 'back in the day', but I doubt I would last to the end of the grind. Couple weeks in and I'd be bailing.

I don't supoose there is a comparable Void weapon for a Hunger build?

The new solo Survival (comp) playlist is much more forgiving than the old playlist.

As for a comparable weapon, nothing really compares to The Recluse, sadly.

To add to this, generally there aren't any weapons that directly compliment a specific build (outside of fringe stuff like the Demolitionist perk). If they're good weapons, they're good weapons period. As for SMG's in the Energy slot, I like a well rolled Bug Out Bag (Solar, I use the curated Slideways/Multi-killclip) and Subjunctive (Arc, mine is Outlaw/Multi-killclip).

You'll find you will change weapons out depending on the activity quite a bit. Though the past few seasons "Pinnacle" weapons are quite universal, Recluse being one of them.

For instance, once you get into harder endgame content like Nightfalls, there is a modifier active called Match Game. This means that enemy shields of a certain type can only easily be broken by a weapon of the same element so you'll have to plan your fireteams loadout to cover the three elements if that specific Nightfall has all three shield types.

Thinking about all there is to know about this game gives me anxiety. I absolutely love it and basically play nothing else but man, I can't even imagine starting fresh. Just keep asking questions!
