CES is barely over, and AMD already has the Radeon VII GPU set for release soon, but the Navi rumor mill is already starting to spin up. An anonymous source allegedly told Red Gaming Tech that AMD will launch the Navi GPU architecture at E3 2019.

Well, according to a source Navi will not be announced until around E3 2019 (which takes place in June). The card(s) will then launch about a month later (I don't have an exact date). According to the source, AMD said that the GPU is looking good (at least the general feeling of the company is confident). For the performance targets - I can't give specifics, as I don't have exact numbers (I wish I did). But I can tell you that according to the source, the company is targeting the "low to mid-range" which, as you can imagine is a pretty wide net.

This coincides with previous Navi rumors, as well as Mark Papermaster's claim that AMD will refresh their GPU lineup in 2019. However, the launch window is more specific than anything I've seen in previous rumors. As with all GPU rumors, this info has to be taken with a grain of salt, but Red Gaming Tech mentions that this same source confirmed previous rumors that turned out to be true. We'll see if this one pans out soon enough.

I took a look at the rumors and from what it looks like, Navi isn't something we should expect to compete with the Radeon 7.

It looks like Navi is going to end up replacing Polaris and the Radeon 7 is a high-end card meant to hold people over until they can get a proper one developed that can compete head-to-head with nvidia's best.

Based again on rumors, that would be AMDs "Arcturus", the "next gen" card listed.

Although I believe based on those same rumors, we are looking at Arcturus being released in 2020 or even 2021.

All rumours at this point so obviously take with a grain of salt

High end? Navi 20 slated for 2020 i've seen. Low end out first.

Edit: Navi 20 should be a med. to hi level GPU

Lets just hope Navi is more than Polaris/Vega+. We've been seeing minor GCN updates for years - AMD could really use a 30% power efficiency boost from architecture and not just from node shrinks. Rumors sound like it should be a low and mid-range part. Probably finally replacing all the polaris parts. It'll be interesting to see if it's based off polaris, based off vega, or substantially different from both.

It's pretty clear from Lisa Su's recent remarks at CES "we're starting with the high-end (with Radeon VII) and releasing the rest of the product stack throughout the year" that the initial Navi parts will NOT be high-end. If anyone wants to think otherwise and get their hopes up feel free, but I'm going to stick here in reality, thanks.

After their $700 Radeon 7 I don't have high hopes. I'm certain they'll make a $350 mid range graphics card like Nvidia.

For the last few gens, all of AMD's cards "look good" until they get released in the wild.

I really, really want AMD to give NV a run for their money but I stopped having any sort of hope/high expectations.

I think if it isn't substantially different a lot of people, myself included, will throw up their hands in despair. Even if it's a modest gpu now, as long as it's a nugget of something clearly superior, then that gives you hope. But if it's same-old-same-old GCN 1.999+++V2 platinum edition ftw then that's extremely shitty.

With Vega 56 & GTX 2060 performance selling for around $350, what is the target for Navi?
The target market for Navi may be quite small if this does not outperform last gen Vega in mid 2019.

Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
Please don't suck.
More like please be good value..
As mentioned, I don't think NAVI has ever been positioned for the high end.
Unless AMD has had under tight lid that they developed invisible mGPU, and demostrate an insane quad navi- io chip setup a la Ryzen that would be something... But there's never been a peep, and AMD has leaked pretty well lately, so seems very unlikely.
I just hope for good value.. considering rx series are pretty good value, i dont see why not navi.

So I'm thinking if Navi is not "high end", will it at least beat vega, or is it going to be between polaris & vega?

Vega56 has already been on sale NIB on ebay/newegg for $299. RX 580's are $200-$250 and RX 590 is what, $260-$280?

I think AMD has squeezed out too many products in the $100-$250/$300 area and has nothing between really $300 & 700 besides Vega64.....

What I"m hoping:

RX 570 becomes $100
RX 580/4G is $150
RX 580/8G is $200
RX 590/8G is $225
Vega56 is $250-$275
Vega 64 is $300-$350
Navi is gtx 2060-2080 for $350-$700.

Rumors do not matter only the actual product does. That is why I enjoyed AMD CES fir what it was, not what I would hope it would be.

Agree with this. We have had RX 580 available since April 2017 ($229 release msrp)
The market does not need a new card with less than RX580 performance 2 years later.
Not liking the "low/mid" range description on these leaks.

I completely agree, just pointing out that Radeon VII is a shrunk Vega, 590 is a shrunk 580 and really we've been seeing shrinks and minor updates since 2012. There have been improvements here and there between GCN 1,2,3,4,5 but they've been less than the level of improvements nvidia was putting out, particularly after GCN 2. So is Navi a minor GCN 6 bump on 7nm or is it something more?

Navi is a new gen but still part of the Raja screw up. Aptly named "Next-Gen" is after Navi from what I can tell.

Isn't Navi the full Raja designed project? (whereas he took over Vega partway through?)

I'm not surprised or disappointed if the new cards are not 'high end'. AMD is a company and like any other company is interested in one thing: making money. The real money maker is and always has been in the low to mid range segment. As much as we love to see the next biggest beast, that's a small part of the market. Most people don't have $1000 to spend on a graphics card and probably don't want to even if they did.

I'm hoping for high value here. Give us higher performance per dollar than what your competition is offering.

I should hope that AMD lowers prices even more. Vega56 is nice but not a huge upgrade for R9 290 owners or GTX 970 owners. As a RX 480 owner what would I get moving to Vega56? Anywhere from 10-20 fps more? Ah, uh uh, screw that.

Except as better perforrming gpus come out, midrange is getting redefined.

I consider 1070 midrange and that is roughly vega56 speed.

Why is 1070 midrange?

1070Ti, 1080, 1080Ti, 2060, 2070, 2080, 2080Ti, Vega 64 and Radeon VII are all faster.

Releasing something that is slower than Vega56 is going to be a dissapointment.

You can already get 580 8GB for sub $200.

Well to be honest i want V56 / 64 performance at a lower power use, and not least a lower price.
That would be fine for my 1080p screen, and it would even work if i should get a 4K screen later on.

Also what interest me a lot is what kind of standards are supported by the plugs on the rear of the card.

I'm right there with ya on 1080P old games and wanting to go lower power single card and maybe 4k / 1440 later. Still on R920x2. My guess Navi 20 in 2020 may fit the bill.

Sorry yes I followed what you meant it just didn't come out that way.
They're very tight-lipped about the whole thing, whereas for their cpus they can't shout about it loudly enough. They're as close to jumping up and down banging pots and pans together as you can get. So naturally the mind wanders as to why the two fields are so different.
The only 2 rumours I ever heard was that navi would be small to begin with and it was originally an upgraded GCN but the project was expanded to be a fuller upgrade.

Why would their new GPU architecture target a lower market than their refreshed old tech?

Cheaper to make, higher performance ( even if a bit) higher volume sales could translate into higher profits. Even if they price it fairly low I mean.

hardly need a source to know that AMD have to complete the product lineup for market segmentaion, they need to replace 560/580 in the first half of 2019 before they become a laughingstock.

AMD just needs a series of solid 1080p and 1440p performers and things are golden, if they manage something that does VR then so be it but if they can nail 60+ FPS in those ranges at max settings for the upcoming launches then everything is great, as long as the prices are reasonable.

I'm hoping for better.
Launch MSRP for 580 8GB was 229usd (before crypto took over). 29 dollar difference in two years would be really sad.

Why will nVidia release a 2050 and 2050ti that's slower than an old 1070 or 1080? Because it's cheaper to both make and sell.

I don't know when, but of course AMD's got plans to compete in the mid-range and low-range parts. And they'll likely be around or less powerful than a Vega 56. But more powerful than a 580/590, at closer to 580/590 prices.

To speculate more specifically than that is a waste of time. Wait for release. Wait for the [H] review. Decide then. I've never understood the conjecture threads where people argue endlessly about what's to come. It makes no difference.
