Hi,

A friend of mine bought on Blackfriday a sale on a 6TB SAS drive, he didn't check it was a SAS and he currently has a Asus P9X79 PRO , i told him he will need a SAS controller to use it, but wondering not sure what would work his motherboard, he wants as cheap as possible (not planning on adding more sas drives).

Thanks for any suggestions,

SATA controllers will not work with SAS drives. SAS controllers will work with SAS and SATA drives though. They can get a pci-e SAS controller for somewhat reasonable prices if they wanted to keep the drive.

You think something like Dell PERC H200 would work on his motherboard? im guessing he will need to flash it to IT mode right before he could use it like a normal disk on windows right?

It should work. Not sure if that's LSI 2008 based or not, but I've used LSI 9211-8i and an IBM M1015 on older boards without issue. Currently running one with a Sabertooth X58 and it works fine.

Yeah they are LSI SAS2008 based. Should work just fine, just be aware you might need a SFF-8087 to SATA Forward Breakout cable as well.

Thanks for all the replies,

So a SAS drive uses the same cables that i use (SFF-8087 to SATA) on my servers with sata drives? this is very interesting, i thought SAS drives used a special SAS cable.

Regular breakout cables won't work for you without an interposer board of some sort. Ones that have power leads as well will however. Honestly for all the extra trouble that it is, I would not run a single SAS drive in a desktop. Sell it and get an equivalent SATA drive.

Well, if the drives are dual-link, then you do need cables that are compatible with that, good point I forgot about that. You need SFF-8087 on the card side and then SFF-8482 on the drive side, like this: https://www.pc-pitstop.com/sas_cables_adapters/I3629-05M.asp
