A company called Feelreal just announced a system that lets users experience smells in VR applications. Using chemicals "similar to those used in the food industry," theoretically, VR users can experience the smell of burning rubber in a race game, or roses in a garden, among other things. A single Feelreal cartridge can hold 255 different kinds of smells, and also features tiny heaters, coolers, and a vibrator to simulate other sensations. Skyrim VR, YouTube VR, Death Horizon, Beat Saber, and "FeelReal Dreams" are among the apps it claims to support, and the device is supposedly compatible with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Playstation VR, Samsung Grear VR, and Oculus Go.

Check out the Feelreal video here.

Feelreal's page mentions that the device weighs 7 ounces, works with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and has a battery good for 4 hours, but they stopped short of mentioning prices or a release date. New Atlas points out that this isn't the first VR accessory to support smells, while the Vortx takes a similar approach to simulating sensations of heat and cold.

not the VR feelreal i was hoping for when i clicked.

They do mention smelling "lavender" in romcoms...

Feelreal just needs to allow 3rd party cartridges/scents, and "alternative" use cases would make them fly off the shelves.

That is pretty danged awesome.

On our last trip to Disney World, we rode Soarin' at Epcot, and it's got scent emitters for grass, dirt, etc depending on what video sequence is showing on screen. Thought it would be cool to have tech like that in the home, and here it is!

Let's hope adult titles do not start using this...
I remember an old Infocom game (text adventurers to the young pups on here) that came with scratch n sniff cards. It was funny how they used it. I remember there was a spot in the bathroom that you were supposed to scratch and sniff. It was a joke - can't remember what the smell was, but it was not related to sewage :)
Wasn't there a concept called Smellivision at one time? The TV shows would somehow use scent to enhance the experience.

Pepperoni pizza.

The smell was pepperoni pizza. The game was Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

So, do they get to smell ass when I tea bag (I mean duck from snipers and hide behind the guy I killed) someone after I kill them in the game?

Smellovision.... lets hope that this in no way allows users to create smells for others, if history has taught us anything is that people can be VERY evil when they think they are anonymous

This might not be good for living creatures.
Plug in scent makers have warnings they harm fish etc and are not good for us either.

Hey man vaping cures cancer and it is similar to this smell idea.

My only question is how accurate can it be, 225 smells not very accurate, where as vaping is probably already ahead of that. My conclusion buy two vapes put in noes and enjoy.

Was thinking of posting that video but you beat me to it. :) Old movie but still funny after all these years.

Waiting for the pr0n version!

You think you want that, but you don't. :doctor:

Krenum beat me to it. Even the nicest looking stuff in the world gets really funky when you get busy. And that is the tip of the iceberg of things that I won't talk about. Let's just say... they do things in movies that I wouldn't want to do, smell, or taste in real life.

Also... what do tentacles even smell like really? Asking for a "friend" :)

Vinegar mixed with Lavender.

Isn't this dangerous? What if a hacker gets access to this chemical laboratory remotely? I'm sure there's a few combinations of those 255 chemicals that when mixed can be explosive or flammable. Or even silently lethal.

For those wondering what Napalm smells like, LOL...
