The 2018 Game Awards were last night, and despite being an "awards" show, we got quite a few announcements out of the event. But one of the highlights was definitely Obsidian's "Outer Worlds" RPG. Thanks to Take Two, Obsidian seems to be reaching beyond their usual game budget with this title, though the teaser falls short of announcing an actual release date and other specifics.

Check it out here.

Watch the official announcement trailer for The Outer Worlds, a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

I wonder how Take Two is going to monetize this one. Hopefully, Obsidian was able to convince them to not do anything egregious.

I like the feel of it. New Vegas, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands - saw all of those in it. Hopefully that translates into fun.

"Hey how do we make gritty real characters" Dirty face, bags under the eyes, if its a girl add freckles.

Hmmmm, semi-interested. I need to see some more actual game play.

i love the f:nv vegas vibes. the acting, lore, stories, stuff you want to remember ... all missing from fo4 and fo76 (i am having fun with fo76 unlike popular opinion but its missing a HEART )

Original creators of fallout 1-2 worked on this game, suppose to be a game with a shit ton of choices. Cannot wait for this to come out.

I don't do multi-player games, plus scifi, so to me it's interesting. Also some games do both, but that often means the single player has be stinted so it doesn't seem worth it (well until they get really cheap).
You missed my joke and/or it wasn’t funny. You’re going to wait for this to come out. As opposed to...kidnapping a developer for an early copy or something?

For what is likely to be Obsidian's last multi-console game, I hope this turns out good. The trailer looked great, but that's what a trailer is supposed to do. Looking forward to seeing more of it.

As far as I'm aware, games published under the Private Division label are free from Take-Two's "every must be games as a service with shitty recurrent spending" ideology.

I'm so fucking hyped for this. New Vegas was amazing and Obsidian creates much better worlds than Bethesda (at least in the vein of the Fallout universe).

Yeah the art style instantly appeals to me, i bounced right off Fall out 3.

Somewhat interested, though the game world description makes it sound limited:

"Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board."

A colony on a planet, or a planet that is a colony? Either way it doesn't sound like space exploration will be much of a feature.

"Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon."

Halcyon is the colony, so I assume the space stations are orbiting the planet?

The easiest and most sensible monitization of this game is in additional planets to explore and settle... Creating your own settlements is your end game activity, finding ways to do it without or with sponsorship from corporations and the whole deal. Sounds like it could be fun.

See, one of the professions is butt pirate. You get a shrink ray and a space ship, then you go into the different space stations of the citizens of the planet, which are in their bums.

.....Another save the galaxy from a evil corporation game?......Eh, I guess I'll play it.

.....Another save the galaxy from a evil corporation game?......Borderlands did it better.

You can't really say that considering that we know next to nothing about the game. We do, however, know that Obsidian has good track record and more games in genres you like should never be a bad thing. I try not to fall into hype trains, but I'm hopeful on this one.

It does look intriguing. The save the universe from the evil corporation idea is kind of played out. But I will most likely give a whirl. Even to support the old Fallout team.

I'll probably give it a try, but first-person shooter-y looking "Action RPGs" have a much higher hurdle to clear with me. I prefer the Isometric RPGs - Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2, and the classic Bioware RPGs come to mind.

Most first-person games of any sort make me motion sick. I loved System Shock 2 and forced myself to play through it and all 3 Bioshock games despite the severe headaches and stomach discomfort it caused (even with motion blur off). 3rd Person seems OK for me - the Mass Effect and Dead Space games turned out to be mostly fine and the Dragon Age games weren't a problem at all. But I personally haven't liked Fallout since Fallout 2. And this one looks to be straight-up first-person.

It will have to be exceptional for me to want to play it while enduring misery.

They'll make hundreds of millions of $ by selling pictures of spaceships.

good timing....our studio make the 2 good fallout games, look when we left you got 76, still risky to associate their upcoming game with fallout at the moment, bethesda almost killed the brand.

With maybe a little bit of Borderlands mixed in perhaps?

I'll be following this one.
Yes. Check out gameplay video--the aesthetics and building interiors, the stationary NPCs, the creatures and their movements, all very reminiscent of Borderlands.

Its like New Vegas, Borderlands, Bioshock and RAGE dropped into a blender, and then modernized and given an Obsidian overcoat. This game is the best news in a while.

So if it turns out to be a smashing success, who owns the IP? And if it's not Microsoft, would Take Two find another dev to continue this?
