Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Kickstarter

I think a big part of the complaints is how the combat system doesn't really feel like Pathfinder.

In PnP Pathfinder, combat is all about initiative, action economy, and positioning. It's what makes summoner/controller/buffer/debuffer wizards the kings of late game, and also what makes it very challenging to play a sneak attacker and very sub-par to play a blaster caster.

The PnP rules don't translate terribly well to the "Baldur's Gate style" Real Time with Pause combat used in Pathfinder: Kingmaker. I really wish they would have gone with a turn-based system similar to how the Divinity: Original Sin games handle it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it just makes the game play VERY differently from the PnP version.

Since movement and positioning is all real time, it makes it very challenging to be a battlefield controller. Enemies are moving toward you as soon as combat starts, so by the time you get the cast of your Grease/Web/Entangle/Black Tentacles/etc. off, you just dropped that spell on half of your team as well (or like half the map, in the case of Entangle...40 foot radius when you engage from roughly 50 feet away...yikes!). The only way to really pull off a pre-engagement cast is to do it from invisibility or Stealth.

Also, since "true to the rules" flanking didn't work out with that combat system, they made any time someone is engaged with two or more enemies in melee count as flanking. So sneak attacks are super easy to pull off to the point where it almost doesn't make sense not to dip one level into Vivisectionist Alchemist with any melee build. You get the mutagen (+4 to a physical stat, +2 natural armor, -2 to the opposed mental stat), +1d6 sneak attack die, and another +1d6 sneak attack die from taking the Accomplished Sneak Attacker feat.

And targeted blaster casters are actually pretty awesome, especially if they also get Sneak Attack dice (ie. Arcane Trickster). On a spell like Scorching Ray, sneak attack dice get added to each ray, so damage can get pretty ridiculous.

In PnP, defense is a bit of a trap as the ol' adage, "The best defense is a good offense," is usually the best approach to most encounters. But with how the enemy AI works in P:K, you really want to focus heavily on defense for one front liner. The first character sighted by the baddies will be their target, and they don't tend to switch targets a whole lot until that character drops. So Valerie, the Tower Shield Specialist Fighter you get as a companion early on is actually quite valuable to the party. Keep her far to the front of your squad to get everyone to target her.
Good points. Playing a caster in these real time games usually doesn't go well. I hope that Realms Beyond works out. Have you seen that yet? It's not truly 3.5 SRD but it's close enough.

The only thing that bothers me with the game is when you have to level up stats I mean I have to check what type of weapon my character has to level that weapon up they make a big deal of leveling up which can take up to 5-10 minutes with all the characters. Good looking game at time though have to watch your Journal so you know where to go. I have 7 hours in the game and I don't think I did much of anything so far =P

Stag Lord goes down I couldn't do it myself though had the aid of a Owl Bear some guy on the right side of the fort and a group of bandits that joined. Otherwise I suspect it would be a pretty hard fight. You need to clear out the entire fort of bandits otherwise they come and help the stag lord at the last second and can wipe out everyone.

How does it compare to POE and POE 2?

Honestly it's a different type of game then both Pillars of Eternity Games. Pathfinder Kingmaker takes about 70 hours to compete I have only 12 hours in the game.
If you want a game that changes up the pace a bit I would recommend Shadows Awakening which is more of a Action RPG that gets away from the cookie cutter Unity engine mold.

Interesting game so far I like how they change it up story isn't that complicated to follow as Pillars of Eternity was same writer I think Chris Avelon. Sometimes the quests question you where to go next can be confusing.

It's awesome that thanks to crowdfunding we have so many great choices!

But, if you think I'd be able to play this, POE2, and DOS2.... in any reasonable time-frame....

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeee__.............................

I am curious, loved POE 2, had a hard time getting into POE. Divinity is as divine as it's short hand, DOS 2.

Shit, time to check that sale.

Finally getting somewhere spent about 10 (37 hours total gameplay) hours to get the Season of Bloom Quest to start I had to upgrade my Kingdom but didn't have enough money to do so because i bought some weapons earlier. I like how you can see over the bluff in parts of the game and it's just a painted backdrop like in the screenshot below. I'm playing on Normal the otherother difficulties are really tuff I had to turn it down once for the Hilltop 2 Boss tried about 10 times and said hell with it all my characters were level 7 and buffed like you wouldn't believe and the Treant kept killing me. This game has a learning curve I was walking around with gimped characters half the time because I couldn't get smart on how to cure my guys with Restoration spell which would only work in combination with this dust and it only restore 1 point at a time so you have to keep sleeping and passing time to restore HPs.

Yeah they are pretty ruthless when it comes to doing stat damage in addition to hit point damage. Took me a second to figure out what was going on and how to fix it.

Mass Delay Poison is a must have buff spell. Plus it lets you cast Stinking Cloud right on top of your team in melee.

Also, make sure you're using Lesser Restoration to heal attribute damage. Full blown Restoration is a waste of resources and is only really needed for level damage.

DLC called The Wild cards with a new companion and the quest starts at the End of Act. 5
Steam has the release date as June but it's actually Dec. 6th 2018

Description

Fiend blood runs through their veins, whispering cruel truths and evil ideas. Who are they? Tieflings, the outcasts of the civilized world.

Living channels of elemental energy, tamers of wild power - who are they? Kineticists, masters of occult elemental skills.

A mysterious stranger crosses the threshold of your barony - marked with the blood of devils, gifted with the power of the elements. Who is she? Discover for yourself!

This new DLC for Pathfinder:Kingmaker includes:
  • A new playable race. During the poll to decide which bonus race we were going to add to the game, one particular option was requested a lot (besides the winner - Aasimars): Tieflings, the people with a drop of demonic blood in their veins. They didn't make it into the base game, but became the natural choice for the first piece of post-release content.
  • A new playable class. They master the raw power of the elements, channeling it into their wild talents to manipulate the world around them. Kineticists are living conduits of primal energy, deadly both in close and ranged combat.
  • A new companion. If you combine a race with a class, you get a character. Welcome your new companion, the Tiefling Kineticist who comes, just like every other companion, with her own storyline. She could also be a romance option and may hold one of the positions in the Kingdom.

The new companion will join your party in the beginning of Chapter 2. Those who would like to add the companion to their current playthrough can do so at any point before the end of Chapter 5 ("War of the River Kings"): the companion will ask for an audience at your throne room. However, we would advise to begin your acquaintance with the character as soon as possible.

I picked up the Season Pass sounds too good to pass up and it doesn't cost arms and legs.

Dear Pathfinders,

we have an important update for you today: we have made the decision to move the release date of “The Wildcards” DLC to next week. The last two months have taught us a good lesson – it is always better to take some extra time to make sure everything is ready, and we feel like we should not rush our first major DLC. To ensure we deliver the experience and quality you deserve, we will dedicate additional time and effort to “The Wildcards”. We hope you can understand our decision - it was not one that was made easily, however, we believe it was the right one.

Thank you for bearing with us, and thank you for your patience!

Getting my ass handed to me by X4 Hydras I almost had them except my Archer ran out of HP at the last one I keep having to backtrack to my kindom to rest I don't pause the game unless I find it necessary for a battle. I ran out of Gold had like 1.5K after buying building points then a NPC just gave me 6.5K after I beat the Hilltop battle X2.

Finally got all the Companions takes a while that big green lizard is almost impossible at level 7 anyway probably wiped my party the fastest of any of them even though I'm level 8 I'm not going to try again. I've been using this site so I know what quests I should do in order so I don't spend 10 hours doing basically nothing learning curve of this game takes a while. Upgrading the Kingdom is tricky you need like 3 towns for a City but I only have one Town and don't have enough Building Points for another two towns you can buy them off a vender but all your gold goes down pretty fast you need 80 silver for one Building point.

I don't have Buffs on my characters on the pic because that was the 1st encounter

Supposedly you can kill him with a Iron cold dagger someone said in one hit but I think I probably sold mine off to the vendor.

No, that's not how it works. Crag Linnorms have crazy regeneration. Hits from cold iron weapons are the only thing that stops that regeneration. So you need to hit it with a cold iron weapon to finish it off, otherwise it'll just keep regenerating.

But actually, that fight can be MUCH easier than he made it out to be. Stinking Cloud (or even better, Cloudkill, if you're higher level) with Delay Poison cast on your squad makes that fight practically trivial.

Also, if you have a mage with Phantasmal Killer and you get lucky, you can kill it with "one shot".

Sooo, play this game on easy?

If you have an understanding of the mechanics, Normal is actually pretty easy. But if you do stupid stuff (like just rush into tougher battles without any preparation, use half-assed party positioning, or have a shitty party composition), you'll probably find it pretty difficult.

After reading how much time you have to put into this game, I'm going to pass for awhile until I clear out some backlog.

gog.com has it in their winter sale for 25% off, or 29.99, which is probably reasonable for a new IP

Last Name Bear first name Owl he kicks ass if your not ready adjusted the easy slider after 5 attempts on Normal. My Archer was like the last character but either he killed my guys to where they were dead cause I was already exhausted from the Goblin Village so I adjusted the easy slider which has easy easier and a easiest mode they must of just upgraded that in game.

Spent about 7 hours in the game today I think time goes fast in this game. Finished Spirit of the Bloom quest advanced the timer to pick up the Varhold Quest. The ending of Spirt of the Bloom is really tricky needed a walkthough using the bird on a rock and sleeping then using the bird bones to make a posion potion no way could I figure that out myself. I thought the lantern was tricky enough to use let alone how to kill the flower. I had to adjust the difficulty for the flower because you split up your party in two and I just couldn't do it at level 8 I'm level 9 now. Spent some time moving upgraded spell to the task bar and I picked up Octiva finally gave her a consitution belt for a little more heath. I guess she's awesome at level 20.
I'm playing the game without pausing for the most part that could be part of the problem.

20190131130925_1.jpg

It's pretty but it's a random encounter on the map.
20190131130112_1.jpg
Another Random encounter so I decided to pick up Octiva to deal out the damage after this shit show my Melee guys couldn't do anything.

Womb of Whatever spider webs slow down your character temporary I'm sure there is a spell to free them or if I could disarm the trap in the first place.

Game is on sale mid week sale Highly Recommended people say it's better than Pillars of Eternity 2 even. I have 56 hours in the game and not even close to finishing it because of the added DLC and timed event quests still working on the main story.

I was going to get it, but reading the reviews, the people have the same complaints they did at launch. just a very poor balance in a game where a build can absolutely screw you.

The Bugs in the game are not game breaking I haven't even seen one myself I did use alot of online walkthoughs for some of the quests though and locations it's a fun game.

How's the combat compared to POE 2? I am in the middle of it right now and have my eye on this to play after. I turned AI off so I could completely manage combat.

Combat is pretty much the same some battles require you to backtrack come back later or rest outside a dungeon the game is more about the RPG aspect of the game and experience. I wish there was a respec though. I only have about 9 hours in POE 2.

Just got this and I'm about to start my game. Anyone have any character creation tips for someone who likes somewhat melee-centric builds?
