I am upgrading my build "I got my LianLi PC-A05B ! it's Small!" under edvb.

A 2700X would be a great upgrade for that build. Not sure I would go with a 1080 though. Especially not for 4K gaming. 1080Ti, 2080 or 2080Ti.

Also, if you bought that PSU when you first built this system I would replace it too. They degrade over time.

I need to know by Friday as I have these saved at Microcenter. That is 200 miles away but I was planning a getaway trip there on Friday to pick them up if it was worth it.

I do not game too much but that could change so just covering my bases on this build. I might get a 1060 ti or 1070 if I can get one cheap and move up as my gaming needs increase.

I also planned to add the Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 cooler as it will fit the case.

Is there a better motherboard for the price or is the Asus ROG Strix x 470-f about as good as it gets at that price point? I will be using two TLC NAND M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 on the board being one 500GB for the boot drive and another 500GB or 1TB for storage. I will also have the HGST 4 GB 7200 RPM hard drive for secondary storage as I have a new one.

Just trying to get everything together and see what other changes are needed to keep the costs down as much as possible but still have quality components in the mix.

What power supply would you recommend? It would need to be modular so I could still use my connectors that I sheathed.
 
Should be fine. Go with a 1070Ti then if you don't game.

DO NOT use those modular cables on another PSU. They most likely will not be compatible. Bad things will happen.

I don't have any recommendations for a PSU as I am typing on my phone, but I highly recommend replacing your old one. [H] did a multiple year stress test on a PSU. When they first got it, then again the same test years later. Performance dropped noticeably which confirms that PSUs aren't meant to last for a long time.

I basically just did the same thing as you about a month ago. I upgraded from a similar system as I had a i7 950 and 12gb of ram. I kept my old Antec DF-85 case and upgraded just about everything else. I agree with upgrading the PSU as even tough my old Corsair 750w was doing fine I didn't think it would last another 8 years. I went with the 1080ti card and I probably could have went with maybe a 1070 card but like you mentioned I like to have my systems last almost 8 years. You can see my current system in my specs.

If I can find a case as small as I have to fit the 165mm cooler I will just keep this for my wife to use. That is a tough one.

Yes I only plan for one graphic card and the 4K monitor I posted above. The taxes at Microcenter kills a lot of deals so I have to find where I can gain a little bit.
 
I am thinking of just getting a Fractal Design Meshify C - Dark TG case. It is small and will fit a CPU cooler up to 172mm so my bases would be covered if I upgraded the stock cooler at a later date.

Any thoughts on this case or is there a better one for air cooling only?

Last question is fan size and placement in this case.

2 140mm fans or 3 120mm fans What brand and model number? This is for the front of the case.

1 120 mm fan in back

Any fans on top or bottom and what size, brand and model number.

This will always be air cooled and most likely will get a GTX 1080 card.

Will be using a stock cooler for now and will upgrade if needed.
 
Personally, I'd grab 2 140mm fans for the front, keep the 1 at the rear, and call it a day. That's more than enough airflow. (2x larger fans at a slightly lower RPM should be quieter and still match the 120mm x3 airlfow)

Model and Brand is up to you. I'm a fan of Noctua, but with a glass side-panel it may not be so pretty.

Consider the BeQuiet Silent Wings 3? I'm fairly partial to these as well.

You don't need any extra fans. It comes preinstalled with 2x 120mm fans and that's plenty for your workload.

I wan to make it as quite as possible so I thought the 140mm fans would help. I am at ear level with the pc but it is off to the right side by two feet.
 
All of your noise will come from the stock cooler on the CPU and the stock cooler on the GPU. Those two stock case fans aren't going to be making much noise at all. Adding more fans, or even bigger case fans will not make those other fans quieter.

I don't think the stock fractal fans are overly loud? You could always just get the case, see how the fans sound, and replace them if necessary

I was just reading some reviews that thought either adding two more 120mm fans to the one installed or two 140mm fans did help keep the GPU cooler and worth adding in the build. I can go either way so just thought to get the two 140mm fans and be done with it.

The last thing now is the GPU. I decided to try and find a EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 with a white LED . Something like a 08G-P4-6181 would be fine.

I want to keep it around $450 for a new or Open Box. Does anyone know of any deals coming up?

I could also trade my current build and monitor for one. It is still in pristine shape and work well with Win 10 installed. The specs are on the first post and the monitor is a Dell 2209WA IPS panel.

Any help to finish this off would be greatly appreciated.

Like mentioned above, if you dont game much just stick with a 1070 or 1070TI at the most. You've been using a GTX 275 so even a 1060 will be light years faster.

They both look fairly similar. Looks like either one would be good, but IMO I would go with the FTW edition.

Well after thinking about it I pulled the trigger and ordered the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti FTW2 GAMING 08G-P4-6775-KR .

It had all the features I wanted and RGB lighting. I do plan to add the two 140mm fans in front so running those at 1000-1250 RPM should be fairly quiet and give ample cooling..

The GTX 1080 were just too big a jump in price and as everyone pointed out this will be more than adequate for my needs. With a 3 year warranty I should be ok for a while.
