Harassment in VR Gaming Apparently a Problem

What are they doing?

-- interacting with someone in the most awful and annoying way they can think of until they get a reaction out of the person they are targeting

Why are people doing this?

-- because they thinks it's funny; because their friends think it's funny

What reaction are they after?

-- any reaction that causes anger, sadness, shame, or a feeling of being unwelcome

And you're fine with this? You're ok with this? In a social VR setting (definition of social: relating to or designed for activities in which people meet each other for pleasure), you're ok with a person or group of people singling others out and making them unwelcome because they think it's funny? Don't bother answering.

It's ok for them to do this if it doesn't bother you? I don't care if someone calls me a n****r, but at the same time, I would never say that to someone else. But I don't approve of the word, and I have already been injured in a local grocery store when a couple of asshats in line started talking shit to a black cashier. I don't tolerate it, whether he's a snowflake or not.

Oh, but they can just ignore the person ... So then they're surrounded by people they can't 'hear' or 'see' who are continuing to amuse themselves, and when the video shows up on twitch it's all good.

Society, etiquette, manners, and good behavior do not stop at any boundary, whether it's the telephone, e-mail, newspaper, or your precious annonymous internet. You need to figure that out. Any time you're dealing with another human being, no matter what the interface, you should remember that it's another human being. The annonymity of the internet is causing a breakdown in civilization. It's not funny, it's not cool, and it's not a proper way to amuse yourself.

Although I do like to teabag my own guildmates.

P.S. I introduced my niece to a really cool chatroom devoted to people who were into music, alternative and unknown artists, and music history. But she didn't like it. It took more than a year to find out that there was a guy in the chatroom who kept asking her if she liked anal sex, kept asking her to describe what she would do while giving him a blowjob, and kept asking her for her to join him in a private channel. She was 13.

P.P.S. I have always wanted Blizzard to make a family server where child-friendly behaviors are enforced. I would have paid an extra $5 a month. But I'm a hypocrite, because I would never belong to a guild that was a family oriented. I have always addressed by guildmates as 'blood farts', and my battle cry is, "I FUCK GOATS!" But that behavior is behind a guild threshold that only people who have my sense of humor are allowed to cross.

Next time I see you walking down the street, maybe I should just push you in front of a bus, because, y'know you need to "harden up".

I think you mistook my point, I was trying to bash that idea of telling everyone to just deal with it. Since so much of this thread and threads like this are full of people acting like people who don't like troublemakers are often regarded as weak and should just learn to deal. The harden up was a reference to the opening post.

I do think it interesting that you went straight to physical threats. Good for you, way to help. You're just like the problem.

.

Funny you forget society was built upon huge amount of (completely valid) xenophobic, racist, and isolationist mentalities. That many traditions and customs that western civilization hinged on (such as traditional family units) are also being disintegrated with no real benefits being shown for either. Aside from "yay, these outcasts of the world that take more resources than they provide are now inclusive and feel better, with all their wonderful mental issues along with them! yay!".

Pushing out the outcasts is how you keep the pack strong.

This seems to be a hot topic. Hot like my VR junk in your VR face! . .... meh tbh i havn't even tried VR yet as i was waiting on the next gen with higher rez better tracking etc. can't see myself hanging out in VR chat rooms as the video clips i have seen make it look like a giant circle jerk.

Best post in the entire fucking thread.

And you're absolutely right: the anonymity of the internet has caused this, and it truly is a total breakdown of society. It's like everyone all of a sudden became Trumps: entitled assholes with zero compassion zero sense, and zero filters between their 12yo damaged brains and the shitholes under their noses.

Although I do like to teabag my own guildmates.

This could be just some latent homosexuality...

Definitely harassment, and anyone calling her a "snowflake" should be drug out back and beaten.

But I'm a hypocrite,

Yep, but at least you have the balls to admit it.

I'll join you: I'm a hypocrite, too (tho not as much) because I spend a lot of my time trolling here and elsewhere, mainly because when I see trolling or hypocrisy I try to toss the biggest rock I can find into said target's little pond & try to shake up his thinking, and the thinking of others around them. In other words, trolling with a point. It must be an age thing, because as I've gotten older, I say what I think out loud more and more, and most often it's a fairly harsh shot at whoever is the asshat of the moment.

Gen[M]ay has really ruined me... :(

So should we cut your throat because you're a drain on society?

VR is like 3D TV and film: a gimmick that doesn't really work. It's a fad that will die a slow ugly death.

You feeling sad =/= drain on society. But hey, you could try and you would fail. (awaits pointless dick waiving ignoring the content of my previous post you replied to)

Because persistent asshats like you consistently find ways around the blocks and keep trolling until they just quit the game altogether.

It cheapens the game, ruins the experience for everyone except the asshats (who are definitely the minority), and ultimately hurts the industry.

And when those asshats lose access those games, they will then turn their asshattery to real life, where they end up either causing real harm, or getting harmed themselves.

Yeah, no. Just fucking behave.

Excuse me? Where do you get off saying that? Have I harassed you or anyone else on this forum? Not counting the roses I was gonna send to a certain topic starter j/k!

How about instead of slinging insults you stay on topic.

TV is a group experience. 3D TV and VR are a focused experience. VR will be more successful because gaming is a focused (mostly individual) experience.

Here's the problem with this. There are ways to currate or protect the individual in that experience. You can mute a person so you never see them and they never see you. You could enforce a spacial boundary. You can moderate with people or technology. So you'll end up with moderated rooms or free for alls. The FFA's will be more popular, though. So that leads to people wanting both. They don't want to self-exclude themselves from FFA's but they want to be 'safe'. Or they want the FFA's eliminated. IMHO, don't be a selfish prick and pick one and be happy with your choice. Destroying the option for other people won't make you happy or society better.

When you start considering getting into VR, you need to have a serious talk with yourself. Look deep down and ask yourself, "Am I ready for an eyeful of nuts?".

If you aren't sure or answer no, you may want to stick with the monitor.

Sure. Next time I want to go for a walk on the beach at night, I'll first ask myself whether I'm prepared for a crotchful of unwanted penis. Because, you know, that sort of thing is normative, isn't it?

Just like FPS's:
FFA = hackers and they suck
Public, Company run servers = less hackers (but they're still there) and they suck 50% of the time
Private Servers, Local Admins = no hackers (unless admins) and they're awesome 80% of the time

It could be depending on how you identify.

People need to stop being so sand-in-vagina sensitive, and on the flipside, people need to stop being asshole dickwads. Surely there is some workable middleground in there somewhere.
