Researchers at MIT have developed a new neural network chip that is three to seven times faster than earlier chips and uses up to 95 percent less power. Because of the increased speed and much reduced power requirements these new chips are ideal for smartphones and other appliances. Once these designs get to market we can expect more intelligent devices that don't have to communicate with the cloud to operate. HAL 9000 in your phone?

"This is a promising real-world demonstration of SRAM-based in-memory analog computing for deep-learning applications,” says Dario Gil, vice president of artificial intelligence at IBM. "The results show impressive specifications for the energy-efficient implementation of convolution operations with memory arrays.
