This may come as a shock to you, but all the young'uns are starting to decide that Facebook is not cool any more. The digital measurement firm, eMarketer in the UK, predicted a drop in usage by the 12 to 17 year old user group in 2017 and they were only partially right. It 2017 the actual drop was 9.9% which equates to 1.4 million users. Further they found that about 2.8 million user under 25 abandoned the service and think that rate of loss will continue for 2018. Snapchat and Instagram are still flourishing.

“We see teens and tweens migrating to Snapchat and Instagram. Both platforms have found success with this demographic since they are more aligned with how they communicate—that is, using visual content. Outside of those who have already left, teens and tweens remaining on Facebook seem to be less engaged—logging in less frequently and spending less time on the platform,” said eMarketer senior forecasting analyst Oscar Orozco. “At the same time, we now have ‘Facebook-nevers’—children aging into the tween demographic who appear to be overlooking Facebook altogether, yet still engaging with Facebook-owned Instagram.”

Why the obsession with what kids are doing? They don't have money to spend on crap all nothing that is advertised. Oh right, it's just about views and audience, not translation to sales. lol.

Other than peaking over my wife's shoulder to show me something or someone on FB, I've never touched it. That makes me the coolest guy ever or chronically unhip.,

I knew if I waited long enough, I'd be justified in never having created a Facebook account.

Kidding. Seriously though, I never saw the appeal. Stuff like Twitter where I get to (theoretically) grab a bullhorn and jump up on a soapbox make sense to me. Posting pictures of my cat or the crap I just bought never did.

GOOD! I hope failbook fades away but what their using to replace it is unfortunately worse.

I can tell you from the behavior of these profiles from different countries basically facebook is a dating site for those guys and gals. Not saying Americans don't do the same because it happens on facebook for sure.

I have an FB account but rarely use it. I have family and friends that use it - basically the only connection I have to them. Shame I never log in :)
My kids do want access to SnapChat and InstaGram. I have them blocked and won't let them use either. Thinking back, I don't think they've ever asked for FB...(I would say no anyway)

That's because all of their parents are on Facebook too and there is nothing uncooler than parents.

Nailed it - just like Myspace before it, AIM before that, IRC before that, and phones before that - the next set of kids can't use the same thing their parents did to communicate. In 10-15 years the current "cool thing" will then be used by parents, and the tweens will get something else.

I just want Facebook to die. I'm irritated with what it has become and negatively it impacts our society.

You mean to say Russian Bots? Russian overwhelming election influences? Bots so powerful that it installed orange at the head of the White House?

Snapchat is the one that self-destructs after a few seconds?...sort of like the Mission Impossible mission briefing

Facebook alternative site, anyone? I kind of like facebook's feed format (except that it's not chronological, of course)

Facebook will eventually fade into the sunset. No different than AOL, myspace, google +, and all the other fad like stuff online. Technology, interests, and age groups change. Facebook has millions of fake profiles just for the purposes of advertising and propagating junk. It will all come crashing down some day.

It's good for communication between people. I think it lost that with some people that decided it was a billboard or soapbox or even a place to recruit for your stupid MLM 'business'.

I like knowing what my friends are doing, etc.. Some are on the other side of the planet. When they get into town, we go for a drink or 2. But, when they are out and enjoying their lives, it's not easy to call them for an hour or two just to shoot the shit. Facebook fills in those gaps.

It's not cool. It never was cool. It's just a damn tool and communications platform. Nothing more. Transformers are cool. Facebook is not.

No, he means people that think all that happened because Facebook says it did. If it's on Facebook it must be true, right?

Have a FB account. Created many years ago before FB became the big well integrated spy master. Haven't touched the account in years. Interesting to see all of the "please login to FB to see what <random person> has done" messages. Many about folks I have no clue who are. Weird one a couple of months ago was to "Wish <redacted> a happy birthday" Redacted was a former co-worker who passed away a few years back. Guess for all their data metrics, FB doesn't know when someone dies.

Snapchat is the number one channel for online bullying. Post malicious content, then automatically delete the evidence. It's even sicker than FB.

It's long overdue though. From the first minute actually.

FB owns Instagram.."Jul 12, 2017 - Facebook reportedly tried to buy Snapchat in 2013 for $3 billion to boost its appeal with younger users. Rebuffed, Mark Zuckerberg turned Instagram into a potential Snapchat killer. Now Snapchat's valuation is falling just before company insiders will be free to sell massive numbers of shares." Does it matter to Comrade Zuckerburg if the young switch over to another company in his stable.

Believe it or not, kids are MORE susceptible to ads, and lifelong habits are installed at a young age.

They may not have very much money, but they are more likely to spend the money they DO have on whatever trendy useless trinket or app of the day is being marketed to them than adults are, athat and getting the exposed to brands at a young age, they carry that exposure with them for life.

So in truth, tweens, teens and young adults are the absolutely most valuable group of all to marketers. Us older folks ar emore likely to see right through what they are doing and not care.

My favorite was the breathless Big Media story about how the perfidious Russians had spent... [dr evil voice] One Hundred Thousand Dollars on social media ads. I keep waiting for a story about how, now that Russia is no longer communist, it really is trying to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids.

Is there really not a counter-app yet? That's all it takes; save the image before it disappears. I have difficulty getting this through non-techies' heads, the idea that once something reaches your computer, storing it permanently is always a technical possibility.

Not sure about stock phones, but on my rooted phone back when I used Snapchat, there was an Xposed module that I had it set up to automatically save snapchats to the user's corresponding folders on my phone and the sender would not receive any notification that I saved it (like it used to notify them if you took a screenshot of their pic). I'm sure there's still a method of doing this on rooted phones. Snapchat tries to block rooted phones too, but I can still get it to work with Magisk (root hiding app) just fine. I could also select any image I wanted and send it as a Snap, which I think you can do that natively now, but back then you could only send pics you took within the app at that time. So I was always trolling people by sending pics from all over the world in the same day, lol.
