Nathan "The Big Krazy" Kirsch of Legit Reviews fame, has been excavating to get to the core of keeping Ethereum mining Hash rates stable. Does the new drift go far enough to reach the motherlode? Or is it just a bunch of muck? Legit Reviews does a mill run to find out. Below is a core sample.

The performance of the Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX Vega 56 and Radeon RX Vega 64 remained the same at DAG #130 and DAG #199 with the new block chain driver! AMD has greatly improved the DAG performance issue!

That all said, my mining humor is deserving of a borehole.

Yeah Claymore alluded to AMD having remedied this a while back .. unfortunately driver fixes won't thwart the impending Aug26 difficulty increase or the eventual transition to proof of stake. The signpost up ahead reads "diminishing returns and dread" for anyone with serious mining hardware investment.

Great news thanks for keeping us informed. The signpost should read Ethereum is not the only coin out out there :)

would just like this stupid mining fad to implode and go away so video cards become available and reasonably priced... go work a few extra hours to make a few bucks instead of wasting energy on monopoly money

My mining has been way more profitable than my recent pay raise. And I just mine at home on a regular 200amp circuit.

#GIMMEMOREHASHESWOOOOOOO

my "monopoly money" helped pay for a large chunk of my 2017 Volt, and will help pay for my Tesla Model 3

We get it -- you have no idea how it works, along with the concept of supply and demand, or open free trade market... that's okay, there's nothing technically wrong with being an idiot. I suppose if someone handed you $40 every single for doing absolutely nothing you would totally say "no" right?

You'd probably think someone was batshit crazy if I came up to you while you were enjoying a hobby of yours or buying stuff at the checkout and started ranting like a lunatic over how you spend your own personal time/money.

My electricity is 100% sourced from Wind and Solar at 7 cents per kwH - woot Texas grid! -- what's that about wasting energy?

Serious question - how did you handle the tax man considering your sizeable coin "income"?
Equally serious question: are you in any way affiliated with the IRS? :p

I don't agree that cryptocurrencies are a complete waste of resource, but just because you use energy from wind and solar doesn't mean that it is impossible to waste that energy :)

Why, so you can sit on your ass and waste your life away playing videogames that accomplishes exactly nothing? :)

Video cards *are* reasonably priced, btw. GPU manufacturers no longer have to get on their hands and knees and beg fickle gamerchildren to buy their GPUs for razor thin margins with rebates and free games, and that's great for them.

Depending how long you bought the coin it ago you treat it as either short term gain or capital gain if you convert it out to USD.

Not sure how mining tax works...would that be like...income tax? lol

This stuff always happens in any market. At one time in 1995 right after Windows 95 was out, people were paying crazy prices for RAM like $100 per MB because going from 2 or 4 MB to 8 was a HUGE increase in performance. If you try to fight markets, you will only lose. Buy before the wave of increases.

Also anyone who hates miners, why don't you just set up a small mining rig and see what you can do? Better to make some money than complain constantly and miss the boat. Not bragging, but I made five figures on crap NVidia cards and have been mining since 2014. That five figures may well be six or seven in a few years.

Just do some research. Pay capital gains tax when you sell. If you try to cheat, good luck.

Oh yea of course. I was just responding to the person who had questions. It's laughable to see people say that they should try to cheat the IRS or hide bitcoin txns from the IRS because it goes against the fundamentals of bitcoin.

I only deal with buying/selling on exchanges and don't mine so that's why I was unclear how you treat mining.

I understand. It's amazing how few people understand that all one needs to do is look around and find some expert opinions and double check those to find out answers. Seems researching and knowing how to find out what the right answer is isn't taught very often in schools anymore.

And I'm paying 28 cents/kwh out here in California, which makes it difficult to make any money mining.

Yes, check out some mining calculators, there may still be some that are profitable, or just look at it as an investment. Always remember that if you mine a coin and it's worth $1, if (yes a big if) it goes to $100 you will be much more profitable. Calculate risk reward, what you can afford to invest and or lose. Some stock advice does translate to coins, a lot doesn't. Always try to factor in some "what could it go to", and risk only what you can afford to lose.

Yeah last I ran a profit run down the break even cost was right around 25 cents per kwh (and this number changes over time) ... at which point you are just converting dollars to BTC via mining... it's cheaper/faster/cooler to just forego buying GPUs at that point and buy BTC (or whatever coin you want) directly.

It's reported just like everything else -- offset by any investments I made in hardware and power costs for the year. Or if the source was a BTC purchase directly it's offset by the investment price (depending on if held <1 year or >year

My purchase of a EV in 2016 (Electric vehicle) also had the bonus of a $7500 federal credit that helped offset any tax liability.

Edit -- I use coinbase to actually "cash out" and they have a few good tools and report generating features built into the site to help generate anything to cover your ass tax wise.

Back on topic, can confirm this driver boosts Claymore hashrate for AMD cards.

My stock RX580 4G = 24 MH/s @ 180 Watts
RX580 + custom BIOS mod = 28.0 - 28.5 MH/s @ 115 Watts
RX580 + custom BIOS + AMD blockchain beta driver = 30.2 MH/s @ 115 Watts, and acceptance graphs are more solid and stable

AMD just threw miners a pretty big bone.

Where did you get the custom BIOS? Care to share it with me?

Its not a universal custom bios, as each bios is card specific. I basically just learned how to use the Polaris BIOS editor, then spent a few hours working out my own custom timings. There are guides online.

Fucking hell. Wish this shit would die off. It's killing the PC.
How is it killing the pc? By selling out of GPUs? That seems like it would be helping it and not killing it. So someone uses their video card for things other than games and you are butthurt?

Gonna be funny once this fad implodes. Nothing that moves upward this quickly is sustainable.

Well we are coming up on 10 years since bitcoin's creation -- is a decade short enough to be called a fad?

It's a highly volatile market yes, but fad is an incredibly poor choice of words. Just like many other sectors of the economy boom and bust is a great way to describe it. I've been through a few boom and bust times in the energy sector, that's just how certain markets and economies work.

Maybe you've read a little too much about the people who get crypto fever and will go out and build $10k mining farms and then lose their shirt because they didn't really understand how long actual return on investment would take or timed their entry wrong. As someone who's been in and out of it for a while, anyone with 1/2 a brain knows a downturn is coming, one always is.

You don't need quick upward movement to be unsustainable either -- look at where we are at with the stock/investment market in the US. Approaching one of the longest running bull markets here soon, history tells us that there we are pretty much overdue for another downturn/recession because we've had steady growth for about 8 straight years now. Everyone is singing songs and dances about the S&P hitting 20K without thinking the gravy train will derail at some point only to be rebuilt. That's just how things work
