OnePlus 5

Product Manager Addresses Criticism Of OnePlus 5’s Design

My comment to this;

You can easily get rid of the camera hump, you make the entire back of the phone flush with the camera, by adding in a thicker battery. If the iPlus 5 ships with a tiny 3,000mAh they are F'ing dumb. I thought their motto was "never settle" well they sure settled on a small battery, this beast should have a 4,000mAh to truly make it record breaking.

And the design of this iPlus 5, it's not sort of similar to the iPhone 7 Plus, or kind of like it. It's a freaking carbon copy, almost exact clone of the 7 Plus. OnePlus doesn't need to do this, they were better off with their main design matching the shape of the older Nexus phones, like the Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus 4 and 5, at least copying those old Nexus phone designs makes sense, as the OnePlus line is basically the new Nexus phone. But to blatantly copy Apple so exact, is disappointing.

But then how will they differentiate the One Plus 5 Max?

Man, I'm really stoked to get me a new OP 5. I hope hope HOOOOOOOPE the battery life doesn't disappoint.

Same here, if they keep it under $499, looks to be a killer phone, but...the battery ? Man they should have went all out and stuffed in a 4,000mAh battery, like the old Motorola Droid MAXX phones. Who cares if that makes the phone a hair thicker, everyone prefers longer battery life, over a skinny hipster phone with poor battery life.

Will this be IP68 certified, like all 2017 flagships ?

The rumored 3300mAh with a SD835 is enough to last all day and more. So I think that's big enough. What I want them to do is give me a phone with a camera bump. If that means more room for you to also put in a bigger battery, I'm all for it. But at $500, this gets to G6 and HTC U11 territory. So the deciding factor will be camera - hopefully the DxO folks fix that issue.

The hardware has been there on past OnePlus phones but they have difficulty with the camera software/processing part of the equation. Hopefully that is where DXO comes in.

OnePlus controlling the hardware and software end of things may not be the best solution as they have not shown that they have the talent or staffing to take on both to this point.

I can understand why they are doing it as it all comes down to trying to find ways to maximize profit from a device that needs to remain at a lower price to get people to buy it over Samsung or Apple.

Carl has spoken about using software to differentiate OnePlus as well as software being a source for revenue.

From Carl's interview (as summarized by TechRadar) a while back with the Wall Street Journal (article link below):

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/12/11/chinese-smartphone-maker-oneplus-on-its-global-push-missteps/

Pei explained that the goal is to eventually create a loyal fanbase of users who then spend money with OnePlus in other places after buying a phone. “Later on we can convert these users and monetize them through software and services,” Pei told The Wall Street Journal. “The way we see things is that hardware is increasingly becoming the distribution vehicle for software.” Pei didn’t explain what OnePlus will sell, through presumably it could be some sort of software – perhaps subscription services.

I just don't care about having an almighty-super-most-advanced-camera-ever on my phone. Gimme something that takes good shots in day and night conditions, along with some basic editing tools, and I'm good. I guess that puts me in a distinct minority?

Honor 9 (4GB & 64GB) version costs 499 € here in Finland. I don't except this to be any cheaper. Generally Huawei (flagship Honor) and OnePlus have had very similar pricing for their phones.

So it does have a beastly 4,000mAh battery ? Not the small rumored 3,300mAh battery ? This is a major deal to me, having a perfect size 4,000mAh is just godly battery coupled with the SD835. Whereas the 3,300mAh battery would be ok, but nothing ground breaking.

[doublepost=1497915285][/doublepost]So it does have a large. Not the small rumored tiny battery. Having the 4,000mAh is the best smartphone news all year so far.. Finally someone got smart and did the right thing battery wise on a smartphone.

Great news the leaked spec sheet listing the 4,000mAh battery right there.

I am so sick of smartphones coming with these baby 3,000mAh batteries, even 3,300mAh is meh, and just lame. OnePlus is always saying "Never Settle" and they better have not just "settled" on a 3,300mAh, but actually had balls to put in a 4,000mAh battery.

From what I learned doing a bit of reading all they need to do is change the voltage and it would change the MAH rating. Thats pretty much what they did with the 3T. MAH is meaningless when the OEM's start playing with the voltage and chances are they are doing it again. Give me the battery in watt hours and then we'll see if it actually grew in size or not.

True Tech
Leaks are leaks, please take them with a pinch of salt. These leaks are neither endorsed nor guaranteed by TrueTech. This leak purports the battery to be 4,000mAh while the majority of rumours suggest a 3,300mAh, which makes it dubious. So again, take this leak with a pinch of salt.

I had the 1+1 and while it was great in some ways the camera was awful. Bad enough that I got rid of the phone within 2 months and haven't bought another OnePlus since
Kinda looking forward to this one and the improvements DxO hopefully made to the cam

Doesn't seem overly compelling thus far. I'm still on the Pixel 2 train until Google gives me a reason not to.

LOL, I do like that "Fast AF" keeps showing up onscreen :p

Will wait for reviews, but am not so eager to upgrade, now. Probably will stick with my 3T.

Heh... Looks like I guessed the price right. Starting from 499 €.

OK. Whose buying one? I dont know if I want to be an early adopter, though its not their first phone.

Some neat stuff and the price is pretty damn good. My biggest issue (outside of not using a universal standard for charging) is some of the software changes they talk about, like App Priority, means they're fucking with the framework. That in turn means slow ass updates from a company already shitty with updates.

Just bought mine, I've got a OP3 now and have had the OP1 and OP2. Since I didn't get the 3T I'm going for it.

I'll stick with my Honor 8. 5,5" screen makes the phone just a tiny bit too large for my taste. Higher end Nokia's should be interesting phones in the future thanks to pure Android.

Fuck it, I ordered the 128 gb version. I'm going to regret being the first in line on this, I know I am. I sweared id never be an early adopter a long time ago and look. LOOK.

Dude buying one of these doesn't make you an early adopter lol, they've been around for years! You'll love it I'm sure!

I own a 3T (purchased about six months ago) and comparing on GSMarena, I don't see enough updated items to easily justify an upgrade.

I've never sold a phone I've owned, so that uncertainty has a lot of weight, is Swappa really that easy/safe? Seems OK.

I'm interested in owning a 5 mainly for future updates to OxygenOS, but almost literally everything in my face governing my experience & interaction, remains the same.

Same:
-Screen & size, PPI density.
-Video UHD recording. (2160p @ 30fps)
-Charging setup w/USB Type-C 1.0

Different:
-SD821 vs SD835
-Quad vs Octa-core Kyro
-Adreno 530 vs 540
-2GB+ RAM on the 128GB model.
-Better camera hardware.

My 3T is still snappy, still heads and shoulders above other mainstream options in price vs performance.
A 5 will slightly improve the experience, but how much will be noticeable? (Same argument I have in Intel vs AMD discussions!)

A feature that would definitely sway my decision would be an IP rating of 67 or 68, but that's not on the table.

Will definitely not make a purchase without reviews, but unless the camera (which could use some improvement, but it's not horrible) results are two or three times better quality than a 3T, I'm hard pressed to move to a OP5 at this time.

I imagine if they plan on adding IP rating, they'll do it in a 5T version and bump the battery life a bit too.

Also, for you all complaining about the look....one of the ways OnePlus can save money is by using already established designs that are pleasing.
I don't see the problem with that if it results in a lower price for me in the end.
It's really not a big deal, unless you don't like the look, in which case just move on.

My little brother just texted me and asked if I'm still going to sell him my 3T. I forgot I promised it to him when the 5 was launched. So, my order for the 5 is in the pipeline. Went all in for the 8GB/128GB model.

Ah, well... at least I'll have a new toy to play with for the weekend.

Just jumped on the base model. I've never come close to maxing out storage on my current 64GB phone, and with unlimited data and cloud storage for everything didn't see the point in going for the top one.

I know, but I like to let stuff brew for a little while. They just started making this new model, even thought its really the Oppo R11 in many ways, so you never know what manufacturing defects lurk in a product until it really hits mass production.

I figured its minimal to double the space and it will come back in resale anyway.

OnePlus lost me, with that baby size 3,300mAh battery. I guess they do "Settle" now. F this iPlus 5 phone.

I know 3300 for today's phones is probably pretty darn good. But if they went balls out and put the massive 4,000mAh battery in the iPlus 5 it could've been a super beast battery champion smartphone, compared to now having really good battery life, but not what they could've done, and "Never Settle". Oh well bring on the Pixel XL 2 please

wowser... that "baby sized" 3300mAh?!?

Let's have a realistic expectation. I'm just saying.

It's a guess based on the 3/3T. They might or might not do a mid-model refresh again, there's no telling right now. They certainly wouldn't leak anything about an upgraded model the day (or before) their current flagship hits retail.
