The reason game developers haven't bothered with greater than 4-core chips is because gamers didn't have them. I mean, I have a 5960x but the vast majority of the market isn't buying $1,000+ chips.
In any case, looking back I probably would have been better off with a faster 4-core, as I see benchmarks of cheaper chips doing better. But if Ryzen takes off (and if Intel counters with mainstream 8-cores) then we will see games take advantage.
