LG 38UX99-W or Acer XR382CQK or Samsung 49KS8500 ???

I think there's enough reason to not only make the Acer a new player, but to instead stop considering the LG at all. The Acer is better in every sense. I see no reason to continue considering the LG. Now, when it comes to the Acer vs the Samsung, I maintain my position. The Samsung is just a vastly superior deal. If the 2 were equal in cost, it would still be worth considering. But hundreds more for what is in many ways an inferior product? I'm not too sure…

The samesung costs more, here, considerably , and what is superior about it vs the LG?

Just sucks that there isn't a card out now that can fully take advantage of that res + 75Hz running most new titles
Crossfire?

Well, this is new info. It really tilts the tables in favor of the 38". When I said the Samsung was superior, I was referring to HDR capabilities, incredible contrast, high peak brightness, and phenomenal build quality. Not to mention native 120Hz (even though there's no firmware that lets the TV actually display 120Hz content as of yet).

I wouldn't count on a new firmware to allow for 120 Hz input. The display controller built into the panel actually needs to support that refresh rate. Maybe it does, but even then, display manufactures are notorious for not updating the older models with features even when they are technically capable as they want people to just buy a new TV (same goes for monitors too).

Would be cool if they do add it, but realistically I just don't see it happening.

Made my decision and pulled the Trigger.

The Acer XR382CQK

  • 37.5" UltraWide QHD (3440 x 1600) Curved Widescreen with AMD FreeSync Display
  • Refresh Rate: 75Hz - Using Display Port
  • Response Time: 5ms
  • Pixel Pitch: 0.229mm
  • Signal Inputs: 1 x Display Port, 1 x Mini Display Port, 1 x Display Port Out, 1 x HDMI 2.0 & 1 x MHL 2.1

It's designed for Gaming (Freesync), has all the right inputs, good warranty, and it's big without going totally Battleship on my desktop. And I currently have 6 Acer LCD displays and not one of them have given me a moments trouble.

Once I get the order email from Amazon I'll let you guys know what the delivery date estimate is.

NOTE: The Freesync and the price closing up so close to the Sammy is what put it over the top for me.

Assuming it gets here reasonably quick, I'll just let my current 7970 drive it until the new AMD cards come out.

FERNANDEZ L. (LISTENING)
Larry: Good Afternoon,

I believe there is an error on your web page for the XR382CQK monitor.

It says the resolution is 3440 X 1600. I believe the correct resolution should be 3840 X 1600. The 3440 X 1600 resolution is for it's smaller brother, the 34" version.

Is this correct?

10 minutes agoFernandez L.: Hi, my name is Fernandez L. How may I help you?
10 minutes agoFernandez L.: You have reached the Acer Sales Chat Department and it would be my pleasure to help you with your inquiry, but first I need to ask you a few questions. Are you in the US or Canada?
10 minutes agoLarry: It doesn't matter, but US
10 minutes agoFernandez L.: Thank you for answering these questions, this is just part of our procedures to better provide you with the best service that you deserve.
9 minutes agoFernandez L.: Just to make sure that I understand your inquiry, you want to if the resolution on Acer website for the XR382CQK monitor has a mistake, is this correct?
9 minutes agoLarry: Yes. It says 3440 X 1600. I'm fairly certain it should say 3840 X 160.
8 minutes agoLarry: argh
8 minutes agoFernandez L.: I understand. Would you please allow me 2 minutes while I check on that for you?
8 minutes agoLarry: 3840 X 1600
8 minutes agoLarry: Cointenly!
7 minutes agoFernandez L.: Thank you.
7 minutes agoFernandez L.: Thank you very much for waiting. I apologize for taking that long.
1 minute agoLarry: no problem
30 seconds agoFernandez L.: I confirmed the information and you are right, the resolution for the XR382CQK Monitor is 3840x1600

Congrats, I'd go with the Acer as well if I was buying today. Extra warranty + lower price and stand rotation makes it an easy decision.

Well, currently is says:

Delivery estimate: Friday, January 27, 2017 by 8pm

For planning purposes, how much wider (not diagonal, actual width) is this going to be compared to my current 32" Acer 2K non-ultrawide ?

Got the order email. Shit....

Arriving:
Delivery date pending. We'll email you as soon as we have a delivery date.

That Acer was announced in June 2016, and I don't think there has been one seen in the wild outside of trade shows. I wouldn't hold my breath on getting it any time soon. Hopefully I am wrong and somebody has one in their possession?

The LG just started shipping too, and it's available. Maybe it was a panel hold up. It just hit Amazon 3 days ago.

So they're not in stock Larry?(The Acer)

I'm gonna grab the LG this weekend, but I'm paying about $1K USD for it :p

No, I had to back order it :(

I actually don't want it to ship until Saturday at the earliest. I just wanted to get on the list.

Yeah Acer was to release a new 3440x1440 gaming monitor for Q1 so that 34" must be the one. As for the 38" I don't remember hearing about it but my memory isn't the greatest at times. I'd say if its out by March 31 that would be good.

Edit: Probably should make a separate thread for it too.

It depends on how much you're willing to wait, really.
No point in "upgrading" to a 38" 75Hz panel that costs $1300-$1600. Wait until the big HDR/FALD displays come out. That's why I settled on my 49KS8000 that I paid $680 for. It's a placeholder until the big boy monitors are eventually released. It can't do more than 60Hz but the picture is amazing, has Quantum Dot tech and it's HDR ready.

A couple things

Freesync doesn't work on AMD cards below the 200 series in my understanding. So your 7970 is not gonna do it.

The AMD Fury X will drive that monitor quite comfortably in Freesync range even if not capping out 75hz all the time your games should be smooth. For instance I could run Shadow of Mordor at 7680x1440 (triple 1440p eyefinity) at 51fps average with a single Fury x on high settings. In my playthrough it was typically 50-60fps even at that res, which Freesync made buttery smooth.

The AMD pro duo card is a potential option for fastest single pcb AMD card. It's basically two Fury nanos on the same watercooled PCB for $800.

Or a couple Fury X for $600.

I mean 34->38 isn't a big upgrade, the resolution is nice, but that means i'll need to turn eye candy down on some games. Bahhhhhh
Yeah, I don't see a reason to upgrade from a 34" to a 38" either. Still waiting for something better. That's just me though.

I'm hoping for some Korean versions of the 38" 3840x1600 this coming fall, hopefully under $1000. I'll ditch my 4k for that provided it's 75+ Hz and freesync.

I went from a 34" to the UC99 and it was worth it imo. Although I got mine around $350 off from Amazon Warehouse Deals. Always felt the vertical height of the 34" was a bit too short, the size of this is basically perfect.

Now, I just want this same monitor in OLED form, but probably will be waiting awhile for that.

Man, I really can't decide, maybe I should stick with my 34" for now.

I would. Going from a 34 to a 38 really isn't that big of a jump.

For me, going from a 32" 2560 x 1440 to a 3840 x 1600 is a considerable jump though. Damn... Never thought I'd say I needed bigger than a 2k Monitor LOL

Yes, I understand I won't have freesync with the 7970, but it will handle the resolution @ 60hz and it's all I need for my main game right now (World of Warships).

I thought about using a Fury as a stepping stone to a Vega, but I think Vega is way to close to consider the expense.

Ok, still no word on a shipping time :(

"Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date."

I did notice that the LG 38" is now out of stock at Amazon with a 1-2 month estimate. One seller has it at over $1500. Here comes the rapage.

For now I'm just hanging in there. That monitor not getting here before AMD Vega hits is kind of a mellowing factor in all this anyway.
