Must suck to not enjoy anything in life.
it's definitely worth it...Force Awakens was the first movie I saw in a Dolby Cinema theater...best picture I've ever seen...better then IMAX or 3D...and the Dolby Atmos audio is amazing as well...well worth the premium...revived my interest in going to movie theaters again instead of waiting for Blu-ray
here's a list of Dolby Cinema locations in the USA (scroll down to the bottom of the page)

Looks like I got two close-by: Tyson's corner (insanely busy at Xmas time) and Georgetown.
Really not surprised that both of those places have it haha.
Man, it wasn't cool to hate the prequels until around 2009. There are loads of video of people loving EP1 coming out of the theater.
TFA at least got a few months until it was cool to hate.
Rogue One only got 24hrs.

As someone who loved EP1 coming out of the theater, you are definitely wrong. It was cool to hate before EP2 came out. After that it was just fact.

Nope, you are incorrect. The massive hate for the prequels didn't start until internet forums got really popular in the mid 2000's. It was an edgy cool thing to do online.
Most of TFA was shot with 35mm film which has about a max res of about 2K. You weren't seeing much better then you could at home on a 1080p screen. The IMAX sceens would look great tho.
They had to keep continuity though with Epidose IV, and remember as far as the Empire in general cared it was a died out religion that Darth Vader was a remnant of.I saw it last night and something about it seemed "off". I think it was just the fact that there's no jedi, and I couldn't relate that much to the characters because I didn't KNOW them. But it was still a good movie, and it really ramped up once it got to the final battle.
I don't know about that. Time called it the best movie of the year. Ebert gave it 4 stars and Gene Siskel gave it 3.5 stars. I'm sure someone like Pauline Kael was less than thrilled with it, but Vincent Camby seemed to like it and all of these reviews are from the opening weekend (give or take a day), which is well before it was available at most folks local screens (cuz that's how shit worked in the 70s). I can't find the original Newsweek review (presumably by David Ansen), but I'd be surprised if it wasn't positive too.IIRC, Star Wars opened to poor reviews, until the reviewers noticed that folks were buying LOTS of tickets.

I liked the prequels only for them showing off the Jedi much better. The rest was a snore fest.So I thought it kicked ass and was much better than Force Awakens. Never get tired of Vader badassery. Good story, good actors, plenty to of good sci-fi action. Maybe we can just pretend Episode 7 never happened and let these guys remake it. Don't know where I'd rank it in the series tho. I'm one of the few that really liked the prequels. Easily middle of the pack tho.
Force Awakens was shot on film but was specially mastered for Dolby Cinema screens...if you think even the best home theater can match its brightness, black level and dynamic range then you don't know what you're talking about...the contrast ratio of standard theaters often tops out at 5,000:1 or 8,000:1, but Dolby Vision achieves a claimed 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio...to say that a home 1080p screen would look close is totally ridiculous...if you can't see a difference then you are probably not a videophile or just don't care

Yeah I feel it was a nice touch keeping it as Peter Cushing, pretty sure he would not had minded and was one of the bigger names at the time in the episode IV film (with Alec Guinness probably being the most notable). Not sure if it's a spoiler, but the "primary CGI character" was amazing. He was juuuuust on the right side of the Uncanny Valley line, by a pixel. Like you could still tell he was computer generated, but it was part "well the actor died 20+ years ago" knowledge and only a small part that he moved slightly weird. They can officially reproduce long-dead actors and put them in movies, with lines and everything.
I actually found him more believable than Vader. I was super happy that JEJ came back to do a good amount of dialogue, but Vader sounded too much like.. JEJ. They should have done something else with the voice.
Oh and LOL at the rebel fighter pilots scenes. I totally got a kick out of it.
The end was weird tho. I could not mentally put the end going right into Ep4.
Special Thanks to The Estate of Peter Cushing, OBE.
So you're saying my dolby atmos 14.2 surround sound system with my 200 inch 4k projected screen is as good as it gets? Thank God, no need to waste my time at the theatre.
Spoiler Alert!
The Rebels Destroy the Death Star.
I'm pretty sure that's not true. A quick scan of cinema sites indicates that 4k is generally (but not always) the limit on 35mm film stock. Some is lower and some is higher. 2k is probably a figured used for what a 35mm print typically resolves to, but if it's a digital print, that doesn't apply.Don't matter what the theater is capable of. If the source material isn't there you can't just magically make it. 35MM tops out about 2K worth of Detail which is about the same as 1080p. And no an OLED TV > Theater screens. The only place it would look better is scenes shot with better cameras which isn't alot in TFA. Even then a 4K OLED TV Would probably win. Bigger doesn't equal better.
Even BluRays comes with Lossless audio now and Atmos. The Theater will die eventually. Hopefully soon.
Metacritic has it at 64 I think which is .... not that great.
I did hear from my friends that the soundtrack wasn't all that good.
I was a kid when The Empire Strikes Back came out. I was pretty much blown away. It was a huge deal to me and just awe inspiring. Definitely fostered my love for science fiction.
I thought The Force Awakens was ....o-kay'ish. It was good in that we needed a new Star Wars movie, but It wasn't great and some of the acting I thought was average, some of the scenes were small when they should have had a bigger scope to them, I have a list if complaints.
I get the feeling this one is very o-kay'ish as well. I will wait and catch it on a used bluray at some future date.
But, as soon as one of these new Star War movies gets really rave reviews, I'll go see it at the theater. That;'s for sure. But, at the moment, Metacritic reviews are a red flag for me.

65 on metacritic, which is positive. Rotten Tomatoes average score is 7.5/10 (and certified Fresh). On MRQE it's got 72/100. It's pretty hard to spin the reviews as anything but positive, unless you're cherry picking negative reviews.
Not sure what it'd take to get you in a theater though. Force Awakens was 93% positive and 8.2/10. It doesn't get much better than that. Wall-E was 8.5/10. Certainly a better movie and better reviews, but not much better.
