I was just interested in getting everybody's opinion on this. FPS has always been my genre of choice with the exception of WoW. I am stuggling to find an FPS I can actually grind and enjoy. A decade ago my competitive gaming career started with CS 1.6 which I fell in love with. Stupid time played. Source came out it sucked and now there is CSGO which is decent but I just cant get into like 1.6 After 1.6 I got involved in Halo 2 and again fell in love. Ended up attending 6 MLG events between H2 and H3 and then came reach...ugh it killed halo for me and it doesn't seem capable of recovering. I mean 5 is ok but sprint killed halo because now the good small, arena style maps aren't playable. Idk I have tried destiny and the pve is ok but feels repetitive. Really cant get into the pvp. I started streaming a month ago and have fallen in love with it so I have been gaming a lot more just having trouble finding a game to keep my interest. Lets hear it guys!

Doom

Though they just nerfed rocket spamming :( Now it feels less like a classic id Software game.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood & Borderlands series are pretty cool.

I wouldn't recommend doom/wolfenstein because it sounds like you want multiplayer, they're good single player games though. (borderlands is shit)

I think you would enjoy titanfall.

Quake live is populated as well, and the alpha Unreal tournament 4 is also really good.

For Single Player? DOOM by far. Multi? I don't know, I can't keep up with today's kids...

I've more or less stopped playing MP FPS because I don't really find any of them enjoyable. Overwatch feels too stripped down and I've never really cared for the "control this space" element outside of CS.
Titanfall is okay, and might be what you're looking for. People have said Doom's MP is full of hacks, but I don't really know for sure.
There's always the pure stupid simplicity of CoD and Battlefield I guess.
I'm holding out hope that the final version of Unreal Tournament 4 is good. Lawbreakers seems like it might have some enjoyable modes.

I forgot about the quake and unreal series...hmm I cant stand the "stupidity" of COD. I wasn't a big fan of the first titanfall but I probably should check the second one out.

You are looking for a competitive FPS? I still think CSGO is it right now. Unreal games still kinda suck, you don't like Halo anymore... Yeah that's about it. Battlefield 4 is pretty much empty, but its fun and about 5 dollars. Haven't tried DOOM multiplayer yet.

Overwatch I don't own but played
Call of Duty Black Ops III just don't get the dlc for Steam you won't find a single game.

If you are on PC, you'll rarely find a match in titanfall. The second one is coming soon and it looks great.

My favorite FPS right now are Overwatch and Destiny. Destiny really sounds like what you are looking for though. New DLC comes out soon, and you can get everything up to for 20 bucks on amazon. I know you tried it before, but they've fixed a lot of the crap that made it feel so repetitive. https://www.amazon.com/Destiny-Taken-King-Legendary-PlayStation-4/dp/B00ZJ20YQO

EDIT: Also the new DLC is going to add custom matchmaking for a more competitive feel.

The competitive multiplayer in Destiny was always solid, in my opinion. Still suffers from low tic rate like most console games do, and overeager lag compensation. But overall it just keeps getting better.

DOOM. Mainly for Single Player, but its Multi-Player is starting to improve as well. I'm guessing that for Multi-Player Quake Champions is going to be the best thing in years though. Not out for a while though.

singleplayer = doom
multi = r6: siege and overwatch... Overwatch is hella fun but r6 I have those heart stopping moments that are chest pounding intense
These are my thoughts exactly.

Can't beat Doom for single player.

R6 has the most depth of game play for multiplayer, and will scratch that counter-strike itch. It is a more methodical game.

Overwatch is a great faster paced multiplayer shooter, and you can spend a lot of time learning all the different heroes' mechanics.

You cannot go wrong with any of these and I recommend playing all if you can.

Doom's SP is fun, but I can't imagine it holding anyone's attention long-term. The last 1/2 of the game feels like the same room over and over but with different textures on the walls. Same enemies, same order, same strategies. It's not bad or anything, but it's not exactly compelling compared to Halo or CS.
Give the Doom demo a shot and see what you think of it. If you like it, imagine that X15 with some different weapons and a few more enemies and you're most of the way there.

Single Player: Doom
Current multiplayer: Overwatch.
Future: Quake Champion is starting to look very promising. Kind of the twitch type FPS of Unreal Tournament/Quake III Arena. One of the reasons I enjoy Doom, has the same feel/flow.

I hate COD/BF games. I did it for real, no need to do it virtually. :)

MP

Arma (with a group of people)

Squad (still early access but it's really good already and will only get better.)

SP

DOOM

Overwatch...competitive mode is awesome and new content and balance updates are constantly coming out.

Doom has a great single player game that is really a ton of fun. The multiplayer is definitely lacking.

Overwatch I can't stop playing. Something about it keeps bringing me back and wanting more. I thoroughly enjoy playing it.

R6 Siege and Overwatch are the tops atm for me.

Both games will have a big learning curve, but you should be able to catch on quick.

SP - Doom. Nothing comes close at the moment, imo.
MP - Battlefied 4. I don't have Overwatch, so can't comment on it.

DOOM. It's the best game I have played in a hell of a long time. Brings back the same feeling I had playing the original when I was a kid 23 years ago.

It depends on what kind of FPS combat you want.

Single Player is easy. There aren't many good ones in the last year.

-DOOM 2016 hands down.

-Honorable mention to Fallout 4 even though it's more RPG. They have made the gunplay hella fun compared to Fallout 3 and New Vegas but falls behind those games in other aspects.

-If you don't mind rolling back a couple years, the Borderlands and Metro series were an interesting set of games.

Multiplayer is where it gets complicated.

-CS:GO is about the purest, old school, FPS experience out right now. This one is about who has the quickest reflexes.

-Overwatch and COD are easy to pick up twitch shooters to get into with less focus on large map and maneuvering tactics. Like CS:GO, they have a lot of focus on quick reflexes but give you the opportunity to get creative with tactics on character specific weapons and loadouts. Avoid COD on PC because it gets over run with cheaters faster than all the rest.

-Battlefield is a bit grander scale than the others with the same fast pace, offering vehicles and destructible environments to mix up the gameplay. It tends to take a longer time to get polished than the other games so expect bugs during the first 6 months after a new title is released. The current game in the series is BF4, but BF1 will release next month (don't think about that too hard it's a marketing thing...like prequels).

-ARMA series is almost more simulation than game. You need a lot of patience and a few close friends to play these games well.

-Planetside 2: Think Battlefield style gameplay, but on an MMO scale. Literally a thousand or more players in one server fighting over a massive landmass. This game is so massive, you actually fight on several different landmasses large enough to be considered continents. Your average sector to fight over is about the size of your average 64 player battlefield map, and each continent has dozens of these sectors.
