So our internet at work today was at a crawl, and surprisingly I traced it to one PC which appeared to have a virus but more digging revealed it was the Windows Update system uploading to external IP's outside the network.

Apparently windows 10 by default allows the PC's to act as torrents updating other PC's on the internet.

I was able to disable it by going into the windows updates, Advanced Options- >Choose how updates are delivered ...

We've had quote a few PC's upgrade to windows 10 but never had this issue, I think somehow there was a bug with this instance that let it send information at full speed... After disabling this feature our internet luckily came back..

Time to turn this feature OFF for all our work machines...
 
I believe if your Windows Updates are manged by GPO this policy is turned off.

Do you use GPO's?
 
Yep. I work for an internet provider and I have had a few customers complain about slow internet. I found the problem to be windows update. This might not be an issue for most people but when you have DSL customers with less than 10Mb/s it certainly is an issue.

I've also had issues with incoming bandwidth to our CO for our customers being massively increased since yesterday. Just randomly. It's always coming from Limelight Networks. Huge spikes of traffic from them. They must be Microsoft's CDN?
 
We don't use GPO, as we have a Linux Samba network for our file sharing.

This is quite ridiculous it happened again tonight, even though we walked through the entire plant and disabled that feature, we may have missed a computer and now off hours it's completely taken over our outband bandwidth which is very low...

I noticed Microsoft offers this question to you when Windows 10 installs about using your computer to update others, you can turn it off at this point. However very few people actually read those [Next] Questions and just agree to everything. It's only available if you choose customize settings not express. So 95% of the installers would never even know to change this...

This all just started so I am assuming it's the shear # of people upgrading to 10 recently causing this or something to this effect.

This was one of the more ill conceived features of 10 but I think changing the connection to metered can take care of it:

Unfortunately the "metered connection" option only applies to WiFi connections. If you're LAN/Ethernet you're SOL (at least the last time I checked it).

But P2P being enabled by default is even more despicable than the telemetry bullshit.
 
Yea, having that option enabled by default is negligence and has caused lots of people to go over their bandwidth cap. But of course the shills blame the victim and say it is their fault for not knowing to change the option.

Welp, sorry for wasting everyones time lol I can see P2P over the LAN a LA WSUS being beneficial but across the WAN only helps Microsoft. I guess that's the point though, right? Ultimately Microsoft wanting to go to a subscription based OS and all.

Do you use any type of application deployment software or are all workstations managed separately? You could push out a registry setting to disable this.

You can still use local GPO's with gpedit.msc to disable that setting as a normal build procedure when you image your workstations. That way users, or Microsoft, won't be able to turn it back on.
 
There's an option under settings > update & security > windows update > advanced options to turn it off. I turned it off during installed and lo and behold, it's still active.

This interface is a bit confusing, since you have the option set OFF, and yet the radio buttons are not greyed out. Have you observed that your PC is updating other PCs on your LAN?
