Is anyone pairing an older CPU to their newly purchased 1070 or 1080 GTX than in my case? (Q9550 from 2010)

My system was built in 2007 and the motherboard is just as old. I started out with the Nvidia 8800 for 4 years before jumping over to the 5850 for 3 years. I used the R9 280 for 2 years and it was a big jump over the 5850, but it is currently being switched out right now for the 1070 GTX. I'm sure plenty of people will say I'm being limited by my CPU. But if doubles my gaming fps, why not!

I would not use anything below an overclocked i5 2500K as even at 4.5ghz it present bottleneck to anything at the level of GTX 970 and above.. a Q9550 would be a massive bottleneck for that level of GPU performance without take in consideration the PCI-E which IIRC is PCI-E 1.1 so another performance hit there also no UEFI support so a probably cause of incompatibility so it may not even able to run with that machine.

I concur. Your kidding yourself if you think that it would be worth it. You could have taken that money and upgraded your system. You werent even pushing that 280 to its limits.

Say what you will. But I only play one game right now and it has taken my fps from 50's to 120's at the same settings.

At maxed settings I used to run in the low 20's fps and now it is running at 50-60 fps.

The plan is to shift the R9 back into this system once I build my new one later this summer.

I made a similar jump from a Q9650 to my current setup and it was a huge and noticeable difference in subjective performance. Boot times, load times, running Office, running games. Build that new system ASAP! :)

Intel i5-6400 Skylake Quad Core (overclock to 4.2-4.5ghz easy)

Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI

Gskill RJ4 16GB DDR4 2666

Total= $398

Done

Would have been better spent than getting that 1070.... besides you wont see the FPS your hoping for. Your system will be to CPU bound.

Appreciate the advice, but I didn't come here looking for it.

OP asks whether anyone is pairing an older CPU to their new NVIDIA card.

In a few weeks I'm going to pair a 1070 with my Phenom II x4 955.

Then I'm going to upgrade everything after that.

So I'm answering your question in advance :p

1080 with that q9550 makes no sense, get a 1060 or 1070 and buy a more modern I5 with the money saved

or an aftermarket 480 if 1080P

oh and the answer is NO, people are not spending $700 on a gpu to pair with a cpu worth $100

I've got a stock-clocked i5 2500k paired with some flavor of a 670 that I'll finally bother to OC and pair with a 1070.

You obviously read the part where I said I had a Q9550.

Did you just purposely NOT read the part where I already have a 1070 GTX and that it will be placed in a newly built system later this summer?

I dont see anything wrong with buying a high end card first. Sure it will be bottle necked until you build a new setup but who cares....it will still be an improvement in most cases. Rushing and buying a cheap motherboard, cpu, and ram is dumb in my book....take your time and buy something that will last a long time:)

I'm just shocked that despite the obvious issue with being bottlenecked, the old dog put up close to 9300 on 3dmark11.

When I finally put together my 6700K system, it will be nice to see that score skyrocket.

Wow that is impressive with ddr2 even ;)... Just goes to show you that in the last ~10 years cpus have not really advanced that much(single threaded). If you look at single threaded passmark scores the 6700k is like 2331 vs the Q9650 which is around 1273, or the AMD 8320 which is righ around 1300, :)

It's certainly not an issue for gpu limited games such as shooters. For cpu limited games like rpgs and strategy games it will feel long in the tooth compared to a new CPU.

Obviously a new CPU is a great idea but I agree with this post.

I always try and buy high end CPU/Mobo/RAM, and so this really strikes a cord with me. If I need extra perf now in games and Im not ready for a Mobo/CPU/RAM but a single GPU is doable then I would possibly do it depending on the game.

I am running an i7 2700k at 4.7GHz. I am very happy about the results I've been able to get from my upgrade to a 980ti (basically 1070 performance wise). Doom in nightmare texture on 3440x1440 was well above the 60fps playable rate.

This is a video showing how that you really don't get much with Skylake. We see mayhbe 15% improvement at 1080p going from Sandy Bridge to Skylake, and you are a bit CPU bound only at the level of 1070/980ti.

(this benchmark clocks the CPUs at 4GHz. We run the Sandy at 4.5GHz+ easily)

I'll be putting a 1070 on my X58 [email protected] in a few months, depends on your games and needs but performance is performance.

You already have the card, the debate is over on GPU vs CPU

Enjoy killing noobs :)

I wanted to post in this thread to say congrats!

I'm torn between splunking down some cash for this generation of cards or waiting for the next. I'm running a 770 and actually don't really game on my pc anymore so it's really not something I should be thinking about, but it's hard not to get excited when some cool stuff comes out.

some games are more cpu bound some are less.

people who ask whats the max for X cpu will never get a straight Y answer.

GTA 5 can use 12 threads, one of the few games that can, and a modern i7 is better than a modern i5 on that game. Other games might matter more (RTS) or might matter less (FPS). I think a 2500k is a decent place to be, but it wont be getting the minimum/maximum frames that a 6700k can for example. I wouldn't stick with anything older though.

also: some games run on 1-2 cores and peg them at 100%, if you have an 8thread system it will show as if the utilization is really low on the CPU if you're not looking at individual threads/cores to see this, obviously a better cpu would do better in those situations.

Myself, I'm REALLY tempted to pick up the MSI GTX 1060 6GT OC for $249.99.

But, I don't play a single game that really needs more power....

For me, it makes a lot more sense to wait for a Microcenter 4690k/mobo combo deal, carry over my RAM and buy a 1060/1070 later on.

Tricky, tricky.

Only the 6700K starts with 4.0GHz. The rest are around 3GHz, but getting more cores. I do hope Kabylake will bump up the speed.

in fact the 4790K was the first to be released at 4ghz with 4.4ghz turbo... annnd.. overclock is easy pal, we are in a community where overclock is a primary need. and every chip since sandy bridge it's easy to overclock to this levels..

So I have an i7-2600K how much would that be a bottleneck?

Depending on your overclock.. if you are at 4.5ghz or above you are perfect for any single card out there..

It's not that shocking really. 3DMark relies FAR less on CPU then games do.

Hmmm... I wonder if that 2.6c in the junk drawer still works.

Oh wait, I threw out my SB65. It was AGP anyway.

Damn.

I'm running an I5-3570K @ 4.2 Ghz w/ a GTX 1070 FTW on an Asus Sabertooth Z77. I have not noticed any bottlenecks or issues with them.

The CPU bottleneck issue is really being over done here. Yes if you own a Core 2 Quad or a stock clocked i5 2500k you'll likely bottleneck a 1070/980Ti/1080 but that doesn't mean you won't still notice a huge boost from something like a 970 or weaker GPU, you just may not get the FULL performance. How much of a bottleneck really depends on resolution and the game. In something like Assassins Creed Syndicate @ 1440p, my 980Ti is by far my biggest bottleneck. My mildly OC'd 3770k can make very good use of a 2nd 980Ti in that game at that resolution.

Obviously a Socket 755 Pentium 4 would be more than enough to drive dual GTX1080 GPUs in SLI. :D :D :D
Seriously though, I do agree with the others about using an OC'ed 2500K at a minimum for your GTX1070 in order to keep the GPU properly fed.

I have my i7-860 below and was thinking of getting a 1070 now and upgrade to Kaby Lake later this year.

I imaging the 1070 is more than the 860 can chew on for now, but rather get the perf bump now use and upgrade the rest later. Good for you using it now.

GPU first, CPU second is a safe upgrade strategy. Will you get the top 10% of the performance with an 860? Probably not, but you will get 90% of the performance.

Im also running at 3570K @ 4.2 on a Z68 with a 980Ti. Would a newer CPU give me a few frames here and there? Sure. But i think its more than sufficient for the most part.

If you're planning on upgrading the CPU in a few months not even sure why you asked in the OP unless looking for EPEEN. Q9550 in pretty ancient these days, but I'm still running a X5680 @ 4.5 here.

The wife still uses one of my old Q9650 gaming rigs for household things from probably 10 years ago at least, she actually uses her tablet in general over that most of the time.

Whatever makes you happy, man. The prices on that GPU will drop a lot by then I imagine. but if you want to go that route it's your option.

Hah sorry I was just giving you a hard time. Apparently it was taken so srsly.

I thought you were questioning whether or not I actually I had the system. I was about to pull receipts, passports, photos of boxes, my dog holding my guns and my grandma with an american flag. HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME

He was just really itching to post that meme pic somewhere and chose your post for whatever reason.
