Gtx 1080 benchmarked

I don't get the disappointment either. Everyone compares it to the previous gens TI card and says it's a small generational jump. It's like buying a brand new Corvette, then the next year GM releases an all new redesigned Malibu and you expect it to be faster than your "old" vette.

I'm still running in a HD7850 on my new build waiting for the new cards. From what I gather, I should be upset that I'll get more performance for my dollar than I would have a month and a half ago, and then should call out nvidia for ripping me off at the same time. :cautious:

My wife and I game on two Panasonic Plasmas. Rocking that old school 1080P resolution. My PC is still rocking a 580GTX I purchased used. It still chews through any game I play at that resolution. I know there are a few games out that would push it well beyond its limits but I haven't played any of those yet.

I do intend to get the next generation so I am good at 1080P for a long time, I will also be more prepared when 4k OLED TVs become more affordable and LG gives the option to turn off the auto dimming of the screen.

Until then I can't stand the black levels of current 4k LCD TVs. Not when I would have my wife's plasma sitting right next to it all the time running the same game usually.

Enough said about TVs though, bring on the next generation of GPUs my wallet demands to be violated!

OOH LORDY. WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING? WHO ON EARTH WOULD HAVE GUESSED THIS!?!?!? I BET IF THEY DID THEY WOULD HAVE POSTED SO ON THIS FORUM MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE A SCREEN NAME THAT ENDS IN "AZEOHIN".

But seriously. Im a f****ing prophet.

Also something to think about. Once Pascal is out Nvidia will ignore Maxwell like they did Kepler. So the performance delta will be even greater once that happens.

I really don't understand the disappointment, I don't.

If this is how you react to Pascal I can't wait to see the reaction to Polaris

A die shrink this large and this long in coming lead many to hope for chips that were actual leaps ahead performance wise. Similar performance for less money and power usage is nice, but that's not going to make it easier to drive games at 4k on a single card. A more powerful card will, and it looks like we might have to wait a bit on that.

I'm more worried about amd and polaris 10, if the chip really is only 232mm squared compared to nvidias 300mm chips, nvidia will have a clean sweep of the upper midrange and high end segment. By the time vega launches, nvidia could just trot out a 1080ti version of the card, and that could be a 500-600mm card. More brute force wins. I wonder, how much money does nvidia get from their graphics chips on desktop vs mobile? Is the desktop a bigger market or smaller one compared to notebook gpu sales?

If the notebook market is sizeable, then the focus on lower power makes sense there as the design wins can let amd get more of that market. If not, it looks like the wrong strategy.

My advice to amd. If you cede the high end as bad as is being speculated, go HARD against the 960-970 class cards that nvidia will not have an answer to.

if polaris 10 has two variants, price one closer to 200 to GUT and DISINTEGRATE ANY possible argument for buying a 960, even for the died in the wool nvidia fans, you need a win so devastating that anyone buying a 960 is deciding to take less than HALF the performance for similar cost, a choice so poor they are jeered and made fun of. And for the higher end polaris part... it better damn well beat a 390x if you are charging 300 dollars or more.

I currently have a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Windforce 3X OC Edition which, at the time of purchase in late 2014, was the fastest card you could purchase. It was part of a new system build, and replaced a 460 card that I was temporarily using because, at time of the 980's introduction, it was constantly out-of-stock. Looking at the performance specifications, I can see that *I* won't see any performance improvement between the 1080 and the 980. Why? Under my present system configuration, the big limiting factor is the Acer H6 H276HLbmid monitor which is limiting my FPS to 60 with VSYNC turned on. My wishlist is to get a GSYNC monitor in the future with a slightly higher resolution. So, thus, the upgrade path for me is to upgrade the monitor first, then get a new card.

I think the same thing was said at the time the 970/980 cards were introduced. There is an incremental improvement from the 770s/780s (previous generation) to the 970s/980s, and a 780Ti's performance is roughly equivalent to the 980.

btw, this is looking even worse for amd the more I think about it. People keep saying the 1080 might be 650 or more... why?

the vanilla 980 die size was just under 400mm2

the 1080 is reported to be a ~300mm2 chip,

the 980 launched at 550, not too far off from the vanilla 780

I fully expect the 1080 to be 550 or less, the new process cost can be offset by a lower die size to hit at LEAST that target price or less.

The real question is the 1070. the 970 came in at 329.... if nvidia does that again with a 1070 with 980ti performance while amd is targeting 390-390x performance for around 300 dollars.... this is going to be a rapefest. Ugh, I need to stop the speculation because it's just so demoralizing for amd, releasing such a tiny ass chip.

I hope the reports we've heard are wrong.

well the fact is that transistor cost has increased slightly, for the first time ever, so even if it's a smaller die it will cost nvidia the same at transistor count parity

on the other hand they can skimp on the pcb because it runs cooler and needs less robust power delivery

interested to see overclocking potential. i might upgrade to a 1080 or i might grab another 980 Ti, not sure.

A previous rumor states the 1080 will be $650 and the 1070 will be $500. So why are you putting stock in certain AMD rumors and ignoring certain Nvidia rumors?

I didn't just highlight the lack of HBM2, there's the little problem of early large dies being tough to bring to market in quantity. But you ddidn't bother to read past HBM2, did you?

You can bitch and whine all you want about this shit, but it doesn't change the fact that making large semiconductors on cutting-edge process nodes is hard. If you complain, you're only wasting your breath.
Dude, it's ok lol. Lighten up, we're debating non critical topics like enthusiast computer hardware

in other news, some idiots still use 3DMark

I know, right?

Despite 3DMark ranking Graphics Cards in an order that almost perfectly reflects their respective performance in real-world gaming scenarios, and acting as one of the few GPU-bound benchmarks with a reliable and decades-old database that has shown historically to correctly advise prospective buyers on the comparative capacity of GPUs for gaming....

It's a piece of trash.

You're on a Computer Hardware Enthusiast forum. If you want to compare the criticality of hardware versus world hunger or poverty or politics, you're in the wrong forum. This is a focussed group of people who discuss and debate computer hardware. Out in the real world, there are more important things, sure, but In this forum, hardware is the single most important thing to discuss and get angry about. Stop trying to retreat from an argument you are loosing by saying it isn't, you just make yourself look like a poser.

You would not believe how many people still use 3dmark. Hell my nephew (who is now getting into PC gaming) asked me like 3-4 months ago what my 3dmark score was. I told him I have no clue because I only play video games. Hasn't brought up 3dmark since :)

I believe everything I read on the Internet. What about you?

Wait, this just in... Jensen just called me. He told me the 1070 will be $799 and the 1080 will be $999! :(

AMD is going to mop up this round with full Polaris 10 for $99.

999$??

Better call Jen and tell him I'm buying two

God you people are so stupid. It's called Polaris.

10 is the price.

because that is a worst case scenario for an amd supporter, and we tend to fret over potential dangers more than the actual likelihood.

If you go by rumors. Polaris 10 is between 390x-fury X speeds at $350. Pascal is 25% faster then a 980ti and $650.

Right now in some DX12 games the 390x is on the heels of 980ti performance, and Fury X is as fast if not faster then 980ti in DX12 games.

I got a feeling Polaris will be just like current cards. Decent in DX11 and really fast in DX12. It could explain why the rumor of 390x or Fury X speed comes from. They are just leaving out if its DX11 or DX12

Just my 0.02c

The days of the 970 are coming to an end :(

It's not going anywhere. AMD should have a part with lower power consumption at the same price, and Nvidia will release their replacement (GP106) this fall. And stock will stick around for awhile just like the 780 did.

Prices will be high on release, but should fall pretty fast. If the 28nm Kepler versus GCN 1.0 fight was any indication, prices should fall fast as yields improve. They'll fall even faster if one part is priced to upset another (like the GTX 680 shocking the HD 7870 at $500, or the HD 4870 shocking the GTX 260 at $300).

btw, this is looking even worse for amd the more I think about it. People keep saying the 1080 might be 650 or more... why?
Because AMD has no answer to it. Polaris 10 looks to be 390/390x speed, while Pascal starts faster than 980ti. When there's no competition, you can raise prices.

The days of the 970 are coming to an end :(

And not short enough it was

Yodas words ring so true, so many times when the dark lord was exposed and should have been stopped did not seem to matter, and the dominance of the 970 continued on in the minds of nvidia loyalist gamers.

Looking at AMD right now like...

I like how people already know the performance of Polaris 10 and Pascal. I mean really? No one has any fucking clue how fast these cards will be.

What if Polaris 10 is as fast as a 980ti and for $350? That would blow everyones mind.

What if Pascal isn't just 25%faster then a 980ti, but really is 40-50%? That would blow everyones mind.

Right now who fucking cares which card is faster. I WANT TO SEE the cards in reviewers hands and benchmarks. So sick and tired of all these Paper Launches.

/end rant

Yeah, as much as I love to Hate on Nvidia, That whole memory thing was blown out of proportion.

No it wasn't. People bought 970 SLI for playing with DSR and 4k, only to find out the memory issue was the cause of the massive stuttering and slowness (me being 1 of them).

It was not blown out of proportion, People who invested $800 into SLI cards have every damn right to blow is out of proportion (sorry I am salty for wasting my money)

I don't think even the 980 was suitable for 4K gameplay... was the 970 noticeably less stable than a 980? I'm asking seriously, as it's been a while since I read up on the issue.

I think what Brackle is trying to say is that mindless speculation is a useless enterprise. But if human beings behaved like that, 90% of all the activity on tech sites would evaporate.

Well I did say 970 SLI. Not a single 970. no 980 or 970 GTX can be used with 4k gaming.

Also remember when the 980/970 GTX was released Nvidia talked about DSR and how you can play 4k gaming on a 1080p monitor. Sooo I mean Nvidia did try to push 4k gaming with the 980/970 cards.

Of course SLI only.

Just gets old. People think rumors are the performance, and say how company A is doomed because company B video card is faster with no proof. It is like people have just gone stupid....

This thread is full of feminazi's that don't like to speculate, have opninions or want others too. Why don't you all just put this thread on ignore FFS and move on.
