Rise of the Tomb Raider

The Rise of the Tomb Raider Steam page indicated a January release date and today Square Enix has confirmed that the game will be raiding its way onto PC's on January 28th...the PC version comes with numerous new features including 4K resolution and has been ported by Nixxes Software.

Nixxes are also working in the PC port of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and have had a hand in numerous Square titles including Thief and Deus Ex: Human Revolution...Square Enix was also kind enough to release a half-dozen 4K screens, which you can witness in all their gigantic-nosed glory below...

I wonder how it'll actually perform at 4K. Damn near everything has "supported" resolutions over 1080p for years. It's just a matter of whether it'll be a slideshow on decent hardware or not.
I know it's bullet point everyone feels like having, but that's getting old.

Looks like FXAA is the only AA option? Come on, Nixxes...

I thought Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was supposed to be the first title to make use of Pure Hair technology for hair simulation?...either way I'm looking forward to seeing how the successor to TressFX looks...I thought the hair in the Tomb Raider reboot from 2013 looked very good but didn't always flow as naturally as it could have and I believe it only applied to Lara and not all the characters

"Compared to TressFX, Eidos Montreal’s R&D lab has significantly improved rendering, employing PPLL (Per-Pixel Linked List) as a translucency solution. The developer has also enhanced simulation significantly via async compute for better workload distribution

Pure Hair was first announced back in March, bringing forth a “master and slave” strand system. Instead of simulating physics for each individual strand, it simulates a number of master strands, which are then emulated by nearby strands, making it easier for less powerful hardware to compute"

Looks like I was wrong about this game.
It's not on AMD's Gaming Evolved list, combined with the Nvidia graphics card bundle, plus Nvidia's VXAO & AMD's PureHair... I don't know what to make of it. This game is another Frankenstein's Monster like GTA V.

It does seem DX12 support is out -- which is another huge blow to AMD. That, combined with the loss of AMD favoritism in RotTR, and Mankind Divided's delay, I was all sorts of wrong about my 2016 predictions for AMD so far.

It will run like shit on AMD hardware just like most PC releases.

And this is how the ensuing shitstorm will go:

Haven't looked at TR 2013 benchmarks in a while, but it heavily favored AMD if I recall correctly. It would be a complete 180 for AMD to suffer in this game. The fact that AMD has lost their footing with SquareEnix / CrystalDynamics could be telling, however.

It should run a lot better than the previous game, since snowy environments are a lot easier to render than tropical ones (See AC Black Flag vs AC Rogue).

I recall Tomb Raider 2013 running better on Nvidia cards even with the TressFX feature enabled...AMD can't catch a break...they actually had a good thing going with TressFX but it was only really featured in 1 game...and now Nvidia has caught up and surpassed them with their own HairWorks feature...plus AMD seems to have lost their sponsorship with Crystal Dynamics

as far as Rise of the Tomb Raider...I hear it didn't sell as well as expected on Xbox One hence the quick turnaround on PC...a lot of that probably had to do with the game coming out on the same day as Fallout 4...I thought it was going to at least be a 6 month exclusivity window but 6 weeks is nothing

From memory, I think the initial version of the last Tomb Raider chugged on Nvidia hardware. Then they patched the game and released drivers a week later that increased performance by like 200%.

That is correct.

In my opinion, TressFX looks a lot better than Hairworks ever did, especially in motion. I'm excited to see what PureHair looks like. I much prefer NVIDIA hardware, but AMD has them beat in some areas. I much prefer CHS to PCSS and TressFX to Hairworks, for example, but NVIDIA can't be beat at ambient occlusion.

I think I remember reading somewhere that it only moved around 400,000 copies on the XBONE. Releasing the same day as Fallout 4 was definitely the wrong strategic decision. A simultaneous release on all platforms this month would have been the better choice, I think.

PSA: DO NOT BUY any nvidia code for this game. people got 300 codes for $3 and they will be deactivated. They added 300 GPUs to cart, added the free game, removed the GPUs and it kept the game at $0.01/each. its been fixed so you cant do that anymore but the codes still activate on steam (might get deactivated).

Another reason to avoid preordering at discount.. Prices will still drop after it is out

the Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch DLC will launch with the PC version, Square Enix has confirmed...

Nixxes guarantees us a really nice product here. They have been nothing but gold.

just snagged an Nvidia code in the [H] 'For Sale' forum for $25 so I'm ready to go!

I saw that. Was kinda freaked out by the misspelling and poor grammar. I'll have to keep my eyes out for another.

I was a bit worried about that as well but then I thought why not, it's only $25...turns out it was a wise move as the seller was great and the code worked fine :D

Ouch, my 7970 and Eyefinity setup probably will be waiting on this one until I get a new GPU. Hope the next round of cards are a good step up!

Got my key for 27 bucks from a member at Hard. Can't complain even though I have finished it on XBONE.

why the strange Thursday release date?...oh well I'm glad the Xbox exclusivity window was so short

Doh. 2nd game in a row when I was expecting a Monday/Tuesday release and it's later in the week.
Hopefully this doesn't become a trend for digital releases. Either that or if it is, keep it consistent.

I wouldn't let it bother you if you can't get a cheap promo code. This is one of those games that will be selling for $5 on humblebundle by he end of he year

you can say that about any game...Rise of the Tomb Raider could be GOTY type of material so it's worth a look...and yes you can get it for more then 50% off in the forums due to the Nvidia gaming bundle

Looks like the pre-load for the game is live.

cool...thanks...

those screenshots look awful...no detail, everything is blurry and washed out...guy needs to learn to take better shots

Yeah, those aren't too great but I have seen other footage and pics. I just ran that one through here real quick. I should have looked closer.

You can purchase this game code on Greenman for 20% off, and activate on Steam.

I think it came to 48 dollars.

If it's as good as the most recent release, it's worth it.
That game was very well done.:D
