The most exciting thing to happen at CES 2016 so far? U.S. Marshals raiding a Chinese hoverboard booth. Quit laughing, I'm not kidding. ;)

For Doerksen, getting the booth shut down serves not only to cut off what he saw as an illegitimate competitor but also to protect the reputation of the entire electric skateboard industry. The explosion in popularity of these products have been threatened by reports of low-quality hoverboards bursting into flames. “If customers start to view the space as full of low-quality, low-cost products, that reflects poorly on everybody,” said Doerksen. “We hate to see someone poison the well.”

Can we please stop calling these motorized skateboards "hoverboards?" One of these days my eyes are going to roll so far back into my head after reading it that modern surgical technology would not be able to recover them.

Hover boards.

Nope, they are every bit a "hoverboard" as an R/C multi-rotor model is a "drone" (even when it has no GPS or path following functionality on board). Welcome to the media dumbing down and hyping-up everything - they don't make any distinction.

I say this whole product is deceptive and they should lose the hoverboard trademark because the product does not hover at all. It is deception! What happens when a true hovering board is released.

I see it as marketing a switch as a router when there is no layer 3 support in the device.

Same way they misuse the term "hacker" when they mean "cracker".

Aren't the original branded ones bursting in to flames as well? lol

The title is wrong, it's a One Wheel, not a hoverboard!

I would imagine someone with the name Dork Son has a history of finding ways to take out his anger on other people.

2 marshalls for a raid. :)

Is this typical for knockoffs or competitors that are creating similar things?

Yeah, I think raid is a tad overstatement. I'm guessing for it to be their jurisdiction, they served a judicial cease and desist with something to do with the patents. Which is interesting, because the design seems to be completely different than the ones we've been seeing. I'm trying to figure out how you ride this thing .. like a skateboard?

"We don't want cheap knock off's polluting the industry!"

Translation: "We want to be the only retailer of hover boards!"

Fun fact - Hover boards are just a cheap knock off of Segways

I've heard the term Swagway. For the douchebags too cheap to buy a Segway.

My biggest pet peeve used to be people misspelling "lose" as "loose", but now I think people calling these non-hovering things "hoverboards" trumps that.

Calling them hoverboards evokes the same feeling as when LED-backlit LCD TVs started to be called "LED" TVs.

I hate to break the news to Mr. Doerksen, but if I were in the market for one of these ridiculous things, after seeing the price he charges for his, I would certainly take my chances with the patent-infringing, possibly flammable Chinese model over paying 3X the price for his.

I don't get this Hoverboard fad, they don't actually hover. Its just a Segway without handlebars.....:confused:

Did they have to make a big scene? Could they not have like just told them before opening in the morning?

They have to actually commit the act before being tsken down.

This isn't pre-crime ;)

Patents are just getting so out of hand.

Imagine if they were around back int he day, unicycles could have patented one-wheel travel and nothing else can do it, bicycles could have stopped motorcycles in their tracks.

Taking something made and making it better or building upon that is going to be something we are no longer able to do with current patent laws and crap.

Indeed. I would love it if my POF ar-15 was actually an "assault rifle". Just cant afford that Class 3 stamp right now :)

If you can't afford the $200 stamp you definitely can't afford the $9k+ for a registered lower or drop in auto sear.

Good. Fuck China. Fucking shit country can't come up with anything on their own. And their quality control rivals that of Ethiopia.

they can build good stuff and have good qc, that does cost extra money and all this stuff is built to a price.
