Galaxy Note 5

FWIW, I'm one of the biggest iPhone homers on [H] and think the Note 5 is fantastic. Best phone of 2015. I still prefer jailbroken iOS to rooted Android, but I like my Note 5 far more than my 6+. The 5 has a bigger and better screen, yet is smaller than the 6+. It feels every bit as premium a product as any iPhone I've ever used. Once rooted and ROMed, the 5's battery life is as good as my 6+. If it could run iOS it'd be the perfect phone. :D

Is the fingerprint reader any better on the Note 5? It's absolute garbage on the S6.

Maybe you have a defect? No complaints about it in any reviews I saw on it or my wife who has one. It's fast and accurate.

Do you guys just use it similar to the GS5 where you put your thumb on vertically? I usually put it on at an angle from the side, which worked fine on the iPhone 6, but doesn't seem to work all that well on the GS6. It could also be that the Verizon version just has so much bloatware that it's just being bogged down by that.

i use it at an angle like you mentioned on my GS6 and it works flawlessly

It is different on the Samsung devices when compared to Apple but I think both work great.

Nah, shit is slow when it wants to be and fast every other time.

Battery life on my S6 has been pretty damn good lately. Thanks Samsung for those updates :D

Wife uses hers like you naturally would when holding it with one hand; thumb goes parallel/horizontal on the button, so pretty much how you're descriping at an angle from the side. Doesn't seem to have any issues with her or my thumb.

I've never seen it lag while unlocking it with your thumb. Seems pretty consistent to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Battery life seems as mediocre as it was when she got it though, usually 2-3 hours SoT in a charge and she has to top off mid day, but she talks on the phone for around 2 hours a day too. This is on Verizon too btw.

I went back to my OnePlus One, as I was itching for some stock type Marshmallow 6.0 goodness, and there are some pretty good CM13 ROM's out now for the OPO.

I haven't used my OnePlus One since the Spring, dusted off the old OPO, flashed the latest firmware, then erased everything, and flashed the best CM13 ROM, got it all setup, and I was like hot damn, Marshmallow is pretty sweat :) I took my SIM card out of my Note 5, and popped in the OPO, and ran it all night and this morning.

Long story short; I am back to my Note 5 and happy as a clam

Short story long; I forgot just how poor the OPO display is, holy cow is it bad compared to the Note 5. Seems like light years apart in technology. The OnePlus One looks like the stone age screen, and the Note 5 screen was built by Commander LaForge on the Starship Enterprise.

And the curved back, I forgot how much I HATE phones with curved backs, my Nexus 6 had that curved back too, and God I couldn't stand that terrible design. It rocks back and forth like a canoe in choppy water when laying on a table. I love laying my phone down on the table and using it while eating, and doing some computer work, and with a flat phone like the Note 5 it's just so simple, easy, and smooth to tap away on it while laying down flat.

One thing was the speed difference, or almost lack thereof in a way. I run Nova Launcher on both phones, and have the speed set up exactly the same to " relaxed", and also Developer options the same too, with 1 second animations. While the Note 5 did feel smoother and overall faster, I can't say the OPO was a lagging turtle or slow motion, the speed difference did NOT feel night and day. Where my rooted and ROM'd Note 5 has ZERO lag, the OPO maybe had a hair hiccup lag here or there, but just a little.

Biggest thing, was how the newer stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow compared to Touchwiz running 5.1.1 did not feel or look, or perform all that different from each other. I am running a Material theme on my Note 5, and it looks pretty cool, and I have stated over the years how much I HATE Touchwiz, just loath it, but not sure what happened, the Note 5's TW + a Material theme is really slick, super smooth and fast, and I admit I like the Dialer, and Contacts, and E-mail, Lock screen better on Touchwiz than I do stock Android.

So all you Note 5 guys are pretty happy? We got my wife an iphone 6S+ when it first came out and I was wavering between the Note 5 and the iphone 6S+. I've been with Android since the original HTC EVO came out and have been too nervous about going to iOS. I told myself I would play with my wife's phone for a month to see how I like it. Turns out I've touched her phone for probably 10 minutes tops outside of the first day setup.

So as it stands, we're just a few weeks away from Black Friday. Figured I just wait a few more weeks (broke my S4, borrowing a friend's S3) before making a final decision.

I'm a pretty big Nexus and CM ROM fanboy, just love stock vanilla Android, and always anti Touchwiz.

But hot damn, Samsung did something right on this Note 5. Once you install one of the popular " Material themes " from the Samsung store, this phone is shockingly great

For the first time in a long while, I'm not itching for another phone upgrade. Very content with this Note 5. Don't even want the Nexus 6P now

@Tzzird:

I'm a huge iPhone guy and love the Note 5. I had one as my second phone for a while. Gave it to the girlfriend when she lost her S6... careless bitch!!! :p

The Note 5 is the best hardware package I've ever used in a phone. Much better than my 6+. If Android is your home, then go for it.

Did any of you guys who had iPhones do the transfer thing? I'm wondering if my S6 is slow because I transferred all my stuff from my iPhone over. Could also be the Samsung Mobile Insights app though.

Awesome, thanks guys.

I saw a video a few weeks ago comparing the multi-tasking of the iphone 6s plus to that of the note 5 and apparently at the extreme end, the note can't compete. Do you ever find this to be an issue when you have lots of programs open?

If we were talking about multitasking on the Note 4, maybe. The Note 5 is super fast for multitasking and works great.

One thing you may be referring to is whether an app is reloaded when you come back to it, vs. already being opened. I've seen some complaints about this but for my usage, it's never caused an issue.

I'm still loving my Note 5.

Looks like a few Black Friday deals are coming around. There's a 1 cent for the 32GB version deal with a 2 year contract with Verizon or Sprint.

Hopefully there will be a deal for the 64 GB version. Also, I'd rather buy the phone outright. Verizon charges you $40 a month per line fee on contract but only $15 if you're off contract.

I never ran enough apps simultaneously to notice any multitasking slow downs on my Note 5.

Appreciate the responses. Looking forward to my new Note 5.

Has anyone noticed weird emojis on the Google keyboard? They are showing up as "stickers" and I was prompted to download them. Half the time they don't even show up as being able to be selected. Where the hell did these come from? This is what they look like...

I don't know if these came from the facebook app or some other app on my phone. But they are showing up with the default emojis. Help!

Just grabbed the note 5 yesterday for myself. 64gb ($150). Traded in my note 3 (for $130) at bestbuy, only had to pay $20 plus taxes, insurance and a phone case. Walked out paying only $83. Love it. Knew what to expect out of it but i love the speed, compared to my dated note 3.

Great deal :)

The display is amazing. The best of any smartphone today.

You paid 83$ for the Note 5 and own it without making any future payments? Why the hell did I lease this thing from Sprint. Are you in a contract? I am not in a contract but have to pay 25$ a month for 24 months with the lease.

Jesus.

No, he didn't get a $750 phone for $83 after trading in a $130 phone, lol. I'm sure it was on contract/lease.

Off topic,

My Note 5 homescreen on the AMAZING Darthstalker v6 ROM :)

Like it except for the Google search bar at the top. Kind of redundant as you can just long press the Home button and get Google to pop up?

I'd say the search bar is less effort, bigger and quicker to activate. "OK Google" voice activation is better still but uses more battery especially if the phone lacks the dedicated hardware processing. Not a fan of the new crayola colored search bar though.

Indeed, and with Nova Launcher, I just set it to open voice search when I swipe up on my app drawer button. Pretty handy.

Renewed my 2yr contract, fuck leasing. The cost was $250 but it was on sale for $150. My note 3 trade in value at best buy was 130. So i was only paying $20 plus their geek squad insurance which was about $11, and then i bought the platinum series case for $40.
Also, their geek squad insurance is the bomb. I got my wife a note 4 earlier this year, but it started malfunctioning (launcher keep resetting, fingerprint scanner kept locking her out the phone). When i went in to make a claim, i thought they was just gonna give me a phone from behind the counter, but no they had to mail me one. It was on backorder, and was not going to come immediately, so they gave me a $799 gift card to buy a phone outright in the store. Yes a big ass gift card to buy a phone outright in the store. So i got my wife the 32gb note 5 earlier this month. Even the sales rep was baffled by this, but i was not gonna complain, at all. From now on, my insurance is going through geek squad.

I just picked up the 32 GB Note 5 yesterday, I'm not too shook up about the sealed battery or no micro sd card. Coming from a LG G2 this phone is Godly. Battery life one day in seems about what my G2 was, maybe a bit better.. but it's so damn fast.. and the screen is just amazing. Camera seems to be a huge step up, takes pictures very fast.

This is like my 4th android smartphone, but my first Samsung phone (seriously) I like all the features and unique apps they pack into their devices. I was looking hard at the LG V10 but felt like it was just too tall and wasn't really feeling the secondary screen at the top. It honestly just looked like a larger, higher res version of the G2 and I wanted a new android experience. Not sure how much I'll use the stylus in the note 5, but its been fun to mess with.

I would recommend playing with the stylus. Thats the reason why i got the nte 5 instead of the s6 edge+. I use my stylus at least 5 times out of the day.

Man, I'm still loving my Note 5. It's such an excellent phone. I've had it since launch and it's still super fast. I love the qi charging and fast charging, it's so convenent... The screen is awesome and the cameras a very good, especially love the double click shortcut.

I was getting complacent, so went and bought a 6S Plus... The Note 5 is by far the superior device (for me). The state of apps on IOS is way overstated. Most looked identical, some important apps I use were broken or abandoned and broken with no suitable alternatives. No app drawer, inconsistent back button placement/gestures in apps, I didn't like the screen as much, seemed noticeably softer looking.

The sound on my Shure SE535 IEMS was a bit nicer on the Note 5. Spotify would make a slight tick/pop between tracks on the iPhone which was anoying. Notification sounds would bring the music level down and keep it down for a couple seconds after a notification. My Note 5 just plays the notification and gets right back to the music which I prefer.

Did I mention charging? IPHONE was seriously slow to charge compared to my Note 5.

For this and a laundry list of other things I couldn't stand, I returned the iPhone 6S Plus in less than 24 hours and I'm enjoying my Note 5 more than ever with a new appreciation for what I have. This Note 5 needs more credit. It is probably device of the year IMHO...

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note 5 Marshmallow updates pushed to March.
http://phandroid.com/2016/01/25/samsung-galaxy-marshmallow-update-2

Android 6.0 came out in October, and I understand the non Nexus phones take 2 or 3 months before they will update to the latest version, but almost 6 months  WTF Samsung  LG and HTC already updated their flagship phones to Marshmallow.

The Note 5 is my last Samsung phone I'll own. And I typically get Nexus phones or HTC, but passed on the M9, and should have picked the 6P over the N5. My mistake, and this year I will get the One M10 possibly, or the Nexus-N this Fall.

You didn't know this when you bought the phone? Samsung is notorious for delayed releases. They are pretty good when they finally come out but the wait can be rough.

I did, but then read that news back in October, that Samsung targeted December for the Marshmallow release on the S6 Edge+ / Note 5. I thought great, makes sense, they will get their flagship phone updated pronto.

Now not till march is a frigging joke.

What happened to that agreement the manufactures made with Google, with promised updates of 90 days after Google releases it ? I'm cool waiting 3 months after the latest Nexus gets the update, but 6 months, no.

Samsung late on updates....tens stunned. Of course it was always and forever going to be 6 months or more.
