SMR drive for photography?

Hi,

I just purchased a new camera that produces staggeringly large files (60-70 megs per file). I was tempted to buy two Seagate 8tb SMR drives for storing my photography on. Would two of these drives in a RAID 1 setting be ok, or am I putting them under stress they are not meant for? I was hoping to have two in RAID 1, and then use some kind of backup software to replicate data to another external drive. Thanks for any input.
 
At this review http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_archive_hdd_review_8tb they recommend that these drives not be used for RAID due to the high write loads involved with an array rebuild and the fact that the drive write performance is all over the map when rebuilding the array. It took 57hrs to rebuild a RAID1 array compared with 20 hrs for the HGST He8 drives.

Several Newegg reviews also mentioned highly variable write speeds.
 
Please don't put priceless files on those drives without any other means of backup. The tech is too new, Seagate quality is dodgy, and what cbf123 said is correct.

For the best reliability, Buy HGST or WD Black/RE.

I also recommend burning those to MDISC blurays.

Ok, wait a minute. I don't care what brand drive you use, always back it up. Plus nothing about these drives having a seagate name makes them crappy. I have 7 and love them. And drive can fail.
 
The 8tb smr drives are good for retrieval basically as huge storage drives, but I would not run them in a raid setup. If you need something for size and speed then maybe 6tb nas drives would be better like wd red or similar drives.
