Reddit Has Started Removing Subreddits For Harassment

Where is the shit storm going down, because it definitely doesn't appear to be on the Reddit front page. Then again I suppose the mods have cleared the front page of any anti-Reddit comments, just like they wiped the place clean of almost all Ellen Pao discussion since she is a snake...

Technically she's a Hydra.

Another point that was brought up on one of the threads is that there are worse subs like cutefemalecorpses or watchpeopledie. Of course those victims can't speak out for themselves and yet video/pictures of their DEATHS are plastered all over reddit. But oh no let's not offend fat people.

Damn, I wish I could have seen that subreddit before it was removed.

Wouldn't this be kinda like an auto-immune disorder? I mean it is reddit afer all.

Yeah, it's become a platform ripe for infantile minds trying to extrapolate self-worth out of trolling.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. And people love to jump to conclusions. Out of all of the garbage on Reddit it's probably not an accident or conspiracy to suppress speech that these five were taken down. Something probably very specific happened regarding these particular subs, threats of lawsuits, threats of personal harm, etc. Hell there's one out there called "C**nTown". I doesn't take a lot of imagination to know what that's about. But I've never complained and not in my wildest dreams would I show it to anyone in my family. So the shit stink on by itself.

lol...apparently they banned /r/whalewatching

It was legitimately for watching whales.

But but but now where will I go to be a sociopathic douchebag and receive support from my peers?!?!? :(

Wonderful, so you support Pao's purge without any explanation for the censorship, because "Pao works in mysterious ways" and surely there's justification for it that is just beyond our human comprehension.

So something very specific happened all at the exact same time, that caused a bunch of popular but politically incorrect subreddits to be closed without explanation. Got it! Seems very plausible.

If you just don't "get it", what made Reddit special is that you could create subreddits for everything and anything, and the only rule was that you simply couldn't do anything super illegal. So if you wanted a gay pride forum, you could have it, and it could police itself so that any gay bashers were purged. Likewise, if you wanted a religious subreddit about how to cure gays, again you could. Every community could have their voice, and the most popular threads of those subcommunities would filter to the top of not just their subreddit but the front page as well... until they started "sanetizing" Reddit so that non-PC popular threads wouldn't make it to FP, and now so that those that attack Ellen Pao or are hot button issues for SJWs, like fat-shamnig, are deleted and all of their community mods are shadow banned. This is a fundamental change to Reddit's open culture and freedom of expression it provided as an outlet, and this is clearly just the tip of the iceberg.

The fact is that part of the price of free speech is having to tolerate speech you don't agree with. But on reddit, tolerating it was so very simple, especially when its contained in its own subreddit. Don't like fat-shaming? Great! Fact is, you probably didn't even know that subreddit even existed, and its very easy not to bookmark it if you somehow found out. And by removing that subreddit, all that's really been done is like one redditor said, pointing a leaf blower at an ant hill. You didn't kill the ants, its just all over the place now and not contained.

Free speech can't be taken by the Government. It sure as shit can with private parties. Reddit is like HardForum. It's censored, moderated and the bad shit is removed. No, you do not have free speech protection on these forums or any others on the Internet.

I never said I supported anything on this subject. I said that given the ton of garbage on Reddit there probably were a specific reasons behind these five that don't involve some liberal conspiracy to purge the world on bad thoughts. There's a great deal more on Reddit far more offensive to liberal causes and I named a specific on so bad I don't even talk about to family.

Whatever, go ban the world for all I care. If the people who operate the site wanna do it, that's their business not ours.

I'm sure someone's gonna be all like, "But 'Merica and Feedum from gubbermint cause of mah libbertarian riiats is bein' vi-o-late-ed!" and not really have any idea how to constructively channel their knee-jerk emotions.

Yes, and no. It IS their site, and they can do what they want. You don't like it, go someplace else. That's fine.

However, it is the business of the people who use the site. While they have no right to the service provided for free, they do have a right to voice their displeasure with the acts of the site owners. Just because the site owners have the right to do it, and should not have that right infringed upon, it does not mean that nobody should question it nor should it mean it occurs without consequence.

At the very least, it seems they pick sides and then try to reassure you they aren't picking sides and that everyone is welcome. It's clearly a lie, and they should stop pretending otherwise and just be honest about it. But that would get in the way of their business, so they prefer to lie out their asses and try to minimize the impact.

The H doesn't have to let people complain here if they don't want, but people do have the right to complain wherever they can and to whomever will listen.

Some people never seem to get that we aren't protected by the legal consequences of speech. Some people think that they should be able to say anything that comes out of their mouths or keyboards and just be able to walk away. It's never worked like that and it never will. Right or wrong it's how humans work.

1) Who here has implied that they have constitutional protection on Reddit? That's ridiculous.
2) It has always been the policy to police and if necessary ban subreddits that blatantly violated the law. Please explain to me like I'm five what laws "fat shaming" broke, not just in one thread that had to be deleted, but so habitually and unmodderated that it needed to be deleted based on legal concerns? And while you're at it, who here or on reddit exactly ever condoned illegal behavior? *crickets chirping*

Some people never seem to get that they can't pretend to support free speech, but do everything in their power to silence things they don't want to hear. Its so ironic, since the left claims to be about "tolerance" and yet they are the most intolerant of speech they disagree with... the key aspect of tolerance is that the word just means "put up with", not like, not condone, just put up with. Be honest, before today did you even KNOW that a fat shaming subreddit existed? If you didn't, how hard was it to put up with it existing in its tiny corner of the internet hivemind? An inability to tolerate dissension from approved group-think is pretty much the root of fascism, and the threads questioning Pao and this decision that were deleted yesterday is pretty much evidence of that culture shift. And if this happened to a community that you are invested in and helped build, like actual long-term redditors, you would be voicing your displeasure with how a few SJW's and their queen tried to break down what you had collectively created almost overnight.

Again, all I said was out of all the garbage on Reddit these five probably weren't shut down just because. And people are perfectly free to say what they want, just don't expect everyone to take it. That's just how it works no matter where you're coming from.

Wait, is Reddit for harassment? I thought that was the sum total of their content...

This.

The first amendment grants everyone the right to say what they want to say without being persecuted by the government for it.

It does NOT guarantee that other, private organizations help you distribute that speech.

That is up to that private organization.

If reddit doesn't want fatpeoplehate, that's their prerogative. Nothing wrong about that.

I find the whole "fat acceptance" movement ridiculous. They try to sell it as "healthy at any size" when it's more like "diabetes and cardiovascular disease at large sizes", and ther is a real need for a legitimate charge against it.

That being said, judging by the name, and my passing familiarity with reddit (I never really used reddit, digg or any of the chans) it was probably more inflammatory than helpful, and it's really no surprise it was shut down.

The left is intolerant of discrimination. If the speech you are using is having a tangible effect on the freedom of someone else then they're going to stop you. It's a catch-22 that works.

As far as reddit goes, I'm pretty sure they have a brand to uphold. While I had never heard of /r/fatshaming or whatever it is, had than been my first exposure to reddit I would have probably been turned off. This does not benefit reddit if their site becomes overrun with the fringe elements of society. At the same time reddit recognizes that part of their allure is the vast quantities of horse shit people can find solace in. They need homophobes and racists to join their site to add quantity over quality. They just cant let it get out of control any more than this site can. Go start a fatshaming thread on [H], see how long that lasts. Reddit operates on the same principle, it's just their business model is different from [H].

Good. Those subs were cancer.

Bad thing is those scumbags are now infesting every other part of the site and crapping up my favorite subs.

Time to hang out here until the kiddies get bored and go somewhere else.

What are the legal consequences of the speech in the subreddits being banned? Curious.

For a hot second her wikipedia page picture had been changed to "INGSOC" from 1984.. beautiful.

P.s. I am very happy I was able to witness that fleeting moment of wikipedia greatness.

But those are the only subreddits I read. :( Seriously.

XKCD said it best.

It's like those morons who whine about people being intolerant of their intolerance when it doesn't change the fact that they were a shitheel to begin with. There's the door, fucker. Come back when you can behave yourself.

Think we're not on the same page. If I say something you don't like you're free to reciprocate in any legal manner you want to.

So says the very guy using his anonymity to say something I wouldn't like, so I could reciprocate in a legal manner if I get butt hurt at him over something he says anonymously. The irony is unsettling.

This is what you said, "Some people never seem to get that we aren't protected by the legal consequences of speech." So I ask you again, what aren't we protected from the legal consequences of speech? Defamation? Libel? Slander? a couple or all? What? And in this case with respect to Reddit?

Reddit is a private entity. They don't have to play host to what they don't like. It's "reverse censorship" to say otherwise. :p

they banned the crap out of gamergate due to false allegations that the entire movement is based around misogyny. They that as their basis to shutdown gamergates platform for any discussion regarding the real issues.

reddit had lost it's credibility ages ago.
