It one in same systemOr do what I did, buy a Alienware Alpha at a tremendous bargain (lovely little machine) and run windows on it, even though it was intended to be a Steam machine.

But yeah... seems like Valve is just phoning it in these days.
From the article
you cant even play games that are compatible with Linux but arent on Steam
Right because some no name fake company with a clueless lady-CEO that got lucky to be propped up temporarily by a Kickstarter based on a bunch of unmitigated vapor is totally the same as Valve.
The Steam controller on the other hand looks to be a nice improvement to console controllers that haven't really changed for many years. Have to use one to really know for sure if it can replace a mouse and keyboard. I'll wait to read the HardOCP review on it...
I honestly dont understand why PC gamers are so fanatical about STEAM. If youre a gamer you should be pissed because Valve isnt doing ANYTHING to satisfy their fan base when it comes to actual gaming.
get off your ass Valve.
At this point anything gaming software related from Valve is a running joke, people have given up on them.
Valve is on record as saying they gauge the community's pulse by reading Reddit. Fucking Reddit. The opinions of adults who don't speak in meme form or spam image macros are being ignored in favor of the ramblings of teens. And look where that's gotten us? Valve has become, bar none, the most out-of-touch gaming company on Earth. But yeah... seems like Valve is just phoning it in these days.
I would love to see these questions answered. Why would anyone spend a grand on a machine that does significantly less than not only a Windows machine, but a much cheaper console? Mods? That's it? The only tangible benefit Steam Machine backers can come up with is mods? Give me a break. Console gamers aren't clamoring for Skyrim. That's just it though, what's new or unique about Steam Machines? What does this bring to the table that can't be done today? Not only that, they do significantly less than the same devices running Windows when it comes to PC gaming.
Pfft. It's just a PC disguised as a console...
Not sure I would rate $100 as exactly expensive, but to each his own.Windows is now the most expensive component of a budget PC if you make it yourself.
PC gamers don't game on budget PCs. Casual gamers will game on budget PCs, like the Asus desktop or HP laptop they bought at Best Buy. I doubt they elected for the Linux install. If you're a PC gamer, Microsoft is your worst enemy.
Now there good one you be surprises on just how min idiot system out there on Steam are even lower end then Steam Box after even Intel HD / Iris Series Graphics an't good enough unless it latest Iris Pro 6200 an even AMD better get of butt with there APU, Be side this is first Steam line I'm sure the 2 gen will be way better as it should have more up date components, but if was going to by one right now I opt for Alienware Steam Machine i7 but there are 13 other option and should all other to come out your that doesn't even count Home Build System but most of them you can't even build because there base on laptop components some other are just base a round Mini iTX system chassis and sure some will be custom build motherboard with reg PC components.PC gamers don't game on budget PCs. As much as I would love to see Linux gaming being mainstream, I have to admit that Windows still have it's grip on PC gaming. Everywhere I look, I see articles and community discussing about DirectX 12. Very few people are paying any attention to Vulcan/GLNext.
Just like xb1 and ps4, then. A x86 pc disguised as a console
On eBay that whereWhere's my 386?... it's all you need...
Your false is false. Alienware Alpha was intended to be a Steam machine, but because Steam wasn't ready, Alienware put their own GUI over Windows. The bottom compartment for example was sized perfectly for the wireless Steam controller USB dongle, but since it wasn't ready they shipped a XBox 360 dongle instead which doesn't fit in the compartment.
So I'd out came with windows, wouldn't it be a windows console?
You had to go there...
The only way Valve could get me to buy a Steam Machine is to bundle HL3 with it. No HL3, no buy. Your move Gabe.

Ahh my favorite vaporeware console!
