New Samsung 4k for everyone.

Cyph, how would you compare 7100 colors with some IPS panels ?
Don't mind the contrast, black level, ips glow, etc. Only colors ...
Thank you

My HP Z30i IPS panel has superior colors to my 7500/6700 without a doubt.
Luckily the 7500's colors are 'good enough' for me.

Oh the IPS glow in the bottom corners is pretty horrible. I'd give up some colors to get rid of the glow.
VA > IPS IMO.

First off, just let me say thank you SO much for this post. I’ve been trying to research these TVs for months with no real luck; most everything I found was either trollbait flamewars or far, far too technical for someone new to this type of thing, and those techy posters really did not care for neophytes entering their little kingdoms and asking questions. Every question I’ve had save one has been answered in the last 30-ish pages here, and in a way I can actually understand, which is fabulous! My single remaining question isn’t even very technical, and you all have sort-of started discussing it in the last few pages, anyway. So here it is.

I currently use a plain old 32” Samsung LED TV with a resolution of 1360x768 as a monitor. I sit about 4’ – 5’ away, depending on whether my recliner is reclined or not. (Back problems, can’t sit at a desk.) This sorry TV is almost 10 years old and has terrible burn-in along the top half, and I just noticed that the other edges have started to go black, bad enough that it actually obscures a lot of the action occurring on-screen. I’ve about decided to replace it with the JS9000, but here’s my concern: at 4 to 5 feet seating distance, what’s a good size screen to actually be able to read the text? Before finding this website, I’d hesitantly decided on 55”, but most of you seem to find 48” to be the golden number. I am sitting further back than most of you, though. I do have problems seeing text in some games (Tera destroys my eyes. Ow.) on this TV. What are your thoughts? I am worrying myself to pieces over this, it’s going to be a huge purchase for me and I’m really afraid I’m going to get it wrong.

I would be using this primarily for gaming, and some web browsing. Thank you for any insight you can offer!

Welcome to the thread. :)

In my humble opinion, if you're going to be sitting 4-5' away, go with the 55" model. Like you correctly observed, most of us using the 48" are sitting closer than that. I'm sitting about 2.5' away as I type this. Some others are able to sit 3-4' away due to their desk setup.

At your distance, I would go 55" if not larger. I would think that text is going to be a bit difficult to read from that distance, even on the 55", unless you use scaling.

Also, don't rule out the 6xxx and 7xxx series. The JS9000 has only really become a "thing" during the past few pages, and everyone has been pleased with it but it shouldn't take away from the value that the lower models present. And then there's the 8500 which is a serious contender at its current price if you don't like or can live without the curve.

Again, welcome and feel free to ask any questions.

Here's a counter opinion for you. I prefer to sit back 4-5 ft with my controller on a 40". I think 48" is a perfectly good size for 4-5 ft. Coming from a 32", 48" should feel enormous for you. It boils down to how big you want your screen to be. I like mine manageable versus enormous.

Question for you...do you have to use scaling at that distance on the 40"?

I just scooted my chair back so that I was sitting 4' away from the 48", and I agree that it's still a good screen size at that distance, but I wouldn't want the text to be much smaller than that. I don't have room to scoot back so that I'm 5' away, but if I did I imagine that I would be squinting to read text on the 48" unless I was using scaling. With the 55" at those distances, I imagine that it would be perfectly readable.

You're absolutely right: 32" -> 48" will feel like an enormous upgrade, but at the same time, text is going to shrink significantly from a 32" 768p panel.

So I guess it depends on his eyesight and willingness to use scaling.

Thanks for jumping in with a second opinion. Something to think about.

Everything is at 100% dpi. I know there's a measurement on distance versus screen size and certain sizes are equivalent at certain distances. However, with the way a human mind works, a 48" at 5ft still feels a lot bigger than a 32" at 1ft. The human brain is funny that way.

Further proof that there is no right size for everyone per a given distance. I thought that 40" was the perfect size for my 2.5 foot span, and you're happy with it at 4-5'. :)

I hope we're not confusing you, nothinglitup. The size question is just so subjective and again, depends somewhat on visual acuity or willingness to use scaling.

I'd like to see the on the same desk, comparing the colors / viewing angles / gamma shift, etc

Good enough maybe, get the JS9000 and you may have your new color champ ;)

Saidnin humor but based on likely truth haha!

I don't think it's such a huge difference between JS9000 and 7500, i mean the colors
what about a nice detailed review with JS9000 ? some videos, photos ...

I'd love to go even larger, but it's going to be in a really small room. The table it's on is in front of the only windows in my house that have a view of the front yard, it'd totally block the view, lol.

Would scaling do terrible things to image quality?

I was originally leaning towards the 6xxx series but started thinking about future-proofing. As I understand it, the 9xxx has the big.. one connect box, I believe it was called? While the others have the mini that's not upgradable. I'm not sold on that, however, so the others are still in the running :)

No confusion, I appreciate everyone's input very much!

Edit: I've looked at so many of these I can't remember anymore - do the 6xxx and 7xxx series have 444 chroma?

Tip: It is worth buying a nicer HDMI cable. I was having problems with my high speed ones lying around. Picked up a decent one and working much better now.

Turned on PC Mode for HDMI 1, looks great, thanks for the tip. It reset some ECO sensors modes, so had to change those back to off.

This 48" size is fun, really immerses you into your work or gaming. The curve is so modern and cool. Colors as everyone says are vibrant. The 4K resolution coming from 2560x1600 at 30" as said before won't blow you away, but the sheer size and pop of the gloss screen does.

Videos and photos won't give you any idea of the differences unless you already have a monitor good enough to not consider this one, and same goes for the camera.

If you say "there's not such a huge difference, great, have you used both? Please post your review"!

Your indecision is on you. I made a playful post to the post I quoted referring to his 7500 colors being almost as good as his current IPS monitor, I simply said the 9000 might make up the difference as it does have better colors than the 7500. I did not say anyone needs to upgrade, nor that he is missing out.

You will not regret either. Again the 9000 does comparatively look better % matters not, in person for some it will mean everything and for those the 9000 is the only choice for others it won't really matter and for those the 7500 is the choice.

The 9000 has upgradable hardware for some like me that alone is worth it for hopefully less lag and better processing options and or connections over the next few years. If you really don't care about that or dont have the mindset to consider those factors then the 7500 is enough.

40 inch get the 7500 48 inch refer to the paragraph above. Dont care about curved screen or upgradable hardware split the difference and get the 8500.

There is more vibrance and contrast on the 9000 with the nano crystals. Definitely the same family just different tears.

Again if it is a hard choice get both as I and some others have done... Some of the finer issues with lag change with updates to firmware and so it is hard to judge if not using side by side.

I understand what you are asking but I am not seeing how a few photos here are going to show the differences and my 40 is returned as if last week so I would not be able to make a fair comparison of the 2.

Want to save $$$ get what is likely 90% of quality or find 40 ideal get 7500

Want to save $$$ and flat is ok get the 8500 for sure

Want to hedge bets on future hardware performance upgrades and guarantee the vest PQ in the lineup right now get the 9000.

Or fund a way to use side by side for a few hours to days ;)

I'm liking my 40 inch 6700 but is the 7500 really worth the upgrade ? Primary use is games.

After seeing the 9000 series next to the 7500 series at Best Buy, I thought the difference in contrast, color, and particularly in black levels was huge. In an instant I knew I no longer had a choice.

I don't see how it would be possible to deduce that at a Best Buy, but okay.

Questions for owners of 9000 series :
Do you use the tv for gaming, too ?
How is the input lag ? Ghosting ?
I think i save some more $$ and i go for 9000 instead 7500
Thank you

9000 isn't available in a 40 curved, right? So no 9000 for me. Not going to a 48.

Hello guys.

I have the dell u3014 currently but want to get a 4k tv. 30 inch at 4k would be too small for me so I am thinking about getting the ju6700 40 incher in the next few hours from frys electronics.

I wanted some feedback or advice as I would be buying soon and wanted to see if any other tvs around the $1,000 range +/- 20% cost would be better.

I want the Samsung because of the curve and 4:4:4 but if there is something better for the price I'm game!

I have a titan X currently and think I have enough horse power so I want to make sure I get the right tv for gaming.

Thanks!

Whew, well I feel a whole lot better about plunking down the extra dough then. Can't wait.

Correct. 48" is the smallest. You and WorldExclusive seem to be perfectly happy with what you have, and I'd keep it that way. Avert your eyes from the fence and what lies on the other side. :D The upgrade bugs are over there, and they have been in a biting mood lately.

I'm just bought the ju6700 Friday and been on it non-stop this weekend gaming with my titan x. GTA5 looks absolutely stunning on this set and the Titan X is fine. Average in the 30-40 fps with most settings on ultra with few settings in between. 444 chroma came right up in the NVCP after I edited HDMI 1 input to PC. My wife got suckered into a monster HDMI cable at BB (last time I sent her to an electronic store) but cable works fine no drop outs or anything like some were having on this post. I did not upgrade firmware because I read it causes more screen lag...the lag is very low and I also game on a ACER XB270HU so I know what fast gaming feels like. Saying that though its not lag free and definitely not gsync but the immersiveness and 40 inch makes up for it!!! Every time I boot my PC its a treat!!!

Of course everyone's impression is different, my wife may not even notice. That's why I made sure to say I thought. Actually in this case I'm pretty sure even she would. The 9000 series were next to the 7500 series, all with same signal. All of the 9000 series on display had the same appearance as one another, all of the 7500 series units on display had the same appearance as one another, and they were supposedly all using the default setting. From what I've read here, the default setting is fairly close to calibrated with these. I'm not sure settings could even account for the 9000 TVs appearing brighter to me without me being able to see visible back light in the black scenes as with the 7500 series TVs. I thought the 9000 series looked more natural than the LG OLEDs. Of course this is completely subjective. If anything, I was biased toward the 7500 before I saw either because that is what I went there to look at. I admit I got carried away with how excited the 9000 series made me and I should have kept my impressions to myself. Everyone considering these should instead take a look for themselves.

Having seen them side by side at a Fry's (well 8500 next to 7500), owned the 40 7500 and the 48 9000 had both in same day but not next to each other.... I agree with your impressions, and very much your last sentiment that people should look for themselves.

There is a reason that I had a hard time choosing between the 40 7500 and that Acer xb270hu going back and forth between them. Upon booting up with the 9000 the question was settled... ;) have only booted up the Acer once since and then for only 1 round of bf4 ;)

The 7500 us still good mind you very darn good... But there is good and there is great/best

I ended up buying the ju6500 since the 6700 curve was an issue when it came to glare. It was honestly not a good experience when I was standing in front of it.

I got the 6500 40 inch tv for $697 which was too good to pass as Frys paid the sales tax on it so I was happy.

The down side..... one dead pixel and one pixel stuck in green. I tried everything I could to fix it but no dice. I boxed it up and I'm taking it back tomorrow for an exchange. Let's hope this doesn't repeat too many times as it will be a pain in the ass.

So guys, a quick update on my "viewing angle" journey..

Received LG 40UG67X today and what can I say.. Worse build quality than Samsung and I also already miss the curve, but being a IPS it has much better viewing angles.. Colors are similar to Samsung, at least until the point where viewing angles kick in... There is practically no IPS glow, but the screen is more glossy than Samsung, which I don't really like, but...

Still don't have a HDMI 2.0 gpu, so I cannot test for 4k@60Hz 4:4:4, although it does have HDMI ultra HD deep color option, which others have confirmed enables chroma support.

One other thing is noticeable input lag when using 1080p desktop resolution, meaning processing and upscaling is also worse on LG. And again, in the LG thread they confirmed lag is of no issue when using 4k.

So what can I say.. I'm sending Samsung back and keeping LG.. Overall LG is simply better for me, even though I've been using it only for a few hours and maybe my words are a bit premature.

Also, the thing is, my Sammy was 836€, while the LG was only 546€ and was additionally discounted to 480€ while I was waiting to receive it... Hopefully they will refund me the difference.. Doesn't hurt to try. :)

Just got off the phone with UPS. My JS9000 is en route! I hate that I'll have to take the day off from work to receive and test it. :D

I'm still lurking. ;)

I have to take my hat off here to Samsung. They really seem to be aggressively out in the lead on some of this display tech.

Where is Sony with any or all of this? Just left in the dust?

One final observation regarding 6700 vs. 7500 before I send them back...if you plan to use AMP, 7500 is very noticeably better in handling the clear motion, presumably due to the faster panel. With AMP off, I did not notice a big difference in ghosting/blur between the two but I enabled AMP on both this morning and while the 6700 does make scrolling smooth on [H] with no jerkiness or stuttering, the text leaves behind a nasty trail/smear. It is MUCH clearer on the 7500.

Well, I have to agree with the others. I got my JS9000 about 3 hours ago and have had it set up for ~2. And it is one gorgeous looking display. I was afraid that the difference wouldn't be that noticeable after vorpel's 6-9% estimation from the 6700, but it is. Seeing is believing.

Now you see what I see, haha!

Since you had I assume the most recent firmware on the 7500 it would be cool for you to make sure the js9000 is up to date and see if AMP feels any different with the octacore!

Yes, it's a visual stunner. I'm pretty darn happy.

I haven't updated yet (came with fw 1207), but it sure feels smooth right now. When I first set up PC mode and fired up Arkham Origins I thought "Hmm, looks awesome but doesn't feel as smooth as I remember." Then I realized that I had never turned off AMP on my 7500 and had gotten so used to the smoothness that anything else seemed a little choppy. :D Plus I'm only using one of my GTX 980s ATM (took one out to test a sound card), so I'm not getting max FPS. I'm sure that's contributing to it as well. Enabling AMP restored the smoothness and motion clarity that I was missing though, so all's gravy there.

Weird thing, though. I believe it was firmware 1207 that brought the huge improvement to Game mode (4:2:2) on the 6700 and 7500. With 1207 on the JS9000, I'm still seeing the degraded quality that was present on the old firmwares (fringing effect on text and muted color palette). Did you notice that too, or did you immediately update?

Hoping that they brought those improvements over to the JS9000 as well, because although Game mode feels extremely fast and responsive in terms of lag and performance, the improved visual fidelity in 1207+ on 6xxx and 7xxx was nice as it looked virtually identical to PC mode. I think I'll hang back on updating the firmware until you and other JS owners can speak on this.

Colors are extremely vivid, vibrant, punchy, etc. Can't wait until it gets dark so I can see it in all its glory, and check out the black levels.

I initially thought that colors were more vibrant on the 6700 than the 7500. This was eventually debunked when I put them side by side and realized that the videos of the 6700 that I took with my iPhone 6 caused the colors to look more vibrant and saturated.

Well, there's no mistaking it on the JS9000. This is a whole new level of colors popping. It's just gorgeous. Some might not like it, but I sure do.
