Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX-L

I just ordered mine on amazon last night $96 for this PSU seems like a steal in comparison to the more expensive and noisy sfx450 and sfx600. Hopefully I can get this soon as its the last part I need for my build. Amazon still say 2 to 5 weeks but that cant be right can it? lol its said that for 2 weeks now

I find Newegg usually gets stock before Amazon for stuff like this so I've held off on ordering until one or the other shows it actually in stock ready to ship.

From what I can see, the SX500-LG are in our US and European warehouses now. You guys should be seeing these in stock soon at various online stores.

Typically our US office receive their products earlier than Eruope, but toward the end of last year and early this year, our US shipments were delayed by up to a month due to labor strikes that were happening at the ports.

Ah! Nice to hear, hope it lands in Canada around the same time as the US.
I've been itching to finish my mini-itx build.

I just ordered from a webshop in Norway.

Did you order it from Netshop? Hope you did it today:)
I see it has dropped significantly in price the last couple of days, I checked it monday, I think, and it was 1198NOK. Today it's 969NOK.

Just order it off Amazon.com it ships to Canada, it'll be 146.80 CAD after exchange rate/dutie/shipping

Just received mine from Scan today. The stock arrived yesterday I believe.

Currently building into an NCase V3 along with Z87E-ITX mobo.

Looking good so far, though not powered it up yet.

Newcomer here btw, hi all :)

Power it up now! ;) Need... more... reports...

Power it up now! ;) Need... more... reports...

Well I'll post my hardware setup to begin with:

NCase V3
SX500-LG
Z87E-ITX
2x8Gb GKSill 2133 Ram
i7 4770S (65w)
Noctua NH-L9i low profile cooler
Hopefully! Nvidia GTX650Ti Boost GPU

Not massively cutting edge but a very good and silent combo, aside from the untested PSU of course.

Good thing about this mobo is that I have a 1Tb Samsung 840 mSata tucked in its slot behind the mobo, and if I leave out the slimline optical I have, then very little wiring to fight with internally. So far I can still get both hands in the space inside, so very roomy for a setup of this type.

Hardware installation in progress...

:p

Plus points so far for the PSU is that the cables are short, but absolute perfect length for the NCase, and they are all flat (Including main power and secondary power EPS), nice and flexible. Dead easy routing.

I'll get a better deal when it lands in a Canadian online store.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/silverstone-sfx-series-sx500-lg-500w-sfx-l-76-105439.htm

129.99 + 5% taxes and free shipping, when stock lands, which is $136.49 CAD

vs

$129.40 USD from Amazon.com, including $6.98 shipping and $25.43 import fee, and considering our dollar sucks at the moment, that would come out to $162.35 CAD.

So I'll wait till there is stock in Canada.

Plugged in, powered up.....

Hmm....

Is it powered up ?

OH YES!!

This is pretty damned perfect so far.

The PSU fan has yet to spin up (Ony running normal OSX desktop so far mind you). No coil whine detected whatsoever (Ear touching PSU fan metal grid thingy).

This thing is seriously quiet guys, very nicely done Silverstone. I've yet to put it under any load, but so far from what I have seen, you won't be disappointed at all.

Fits beautifully in the NCase V3 without any adaptors or brackets.

I have the GTX650Ti Boost in there, and the main 24 pin power cable, which Ive squashed flat just a little bit, touches it but it doesnt bend the card and doesnt place any pressure on it at all.

Im confident in saying I could comfortably put my MSI 760 4Gb Twin Frozr in there if needed.

What these last couple of bits mean is that they have done a sound job on the cabling and connectors.

If you were having doubts about fan noise, coil whine, just go buy it now, while its still in stock :)

I have a few images for those who are interested in seeing the fit in an NCase but cant work out how to get them uploaded. Any help guys & girls ??

Ok, think I've got the pics working. Cant get them to resize, apologies for the largeness.

Do replacement cables with shorter connectors exist? I've seen photos of the normal cables pressing down on video cards with back plates, and I'd be more comfortable with as little pressure as possible.

Any word on when the FTZ01 will be in stock in the US? :D

It comes supplied with short cables by default. Dont expect to use this in a full size case without buying a longer set of cables.

They are all flat though and nicely flexible.

No pressure on my GPU board at all once it was all in place.

That's because you don't have a reference model GTX980 (they are longer and have backplates).

The main power cable overlaps the end of the GPU board by about half an inch. Still no pressure on it though.

I have a much bigger 760 4Gb MSI GPU I can try, but its unlikely to make a difference.

Wonkey, how's it going with the fan? Is it moving yet?

I have the Prime95 torture test running; CPU load 99.48%

The fan has spun a couple of times for just a few seconds and then stopped again.

Bear in mind these parts dont draw much power though.

Ok, so after a relatively short 8 minute run of Prime95 running the torture test (Its still running) the fan is now kicking in as expected.

It is spinning up relatively slowly; I'd say no more than 400-500rpm for periods of about 10-15 seconds and then shutting off again. Rinse. Repeat.

Its eerily quiet. I really cant make out the noise of the PSU fan at all. Still no signs of any coil whine either.

System load still above 99%.

I meant the length of the hard plastic connectors, not the cables themselves.

The blocks measure 10.5 mm, the sockets protrude about 3mm from the metal casing. No more than 15mm in total. Add to that the thickness required depending how much you bend/flatten the wires.

Would it help if I put a much longer GPU in there which extends right past the PSU connector block ?

Little update :

Torture test now running for 31 minutes and counting.

Still over 99% load.

PSU is silently spinning, for slightly longer periods, but still only at a few hundred rpm I reckon; its not spinning mentally fast or anything, and then stopping as before.

Still no coil whine whatsoever.

Outside temperature of the PSU case is barely luke warm.

I'll put the other GPU in there shortly then.

This is the MSI GTX760 Twin Frozr Gaming OC 4Gb (1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin connectors).

Total card length is 275mm all in, and has a backplate too.

Should comfortably draw more power.

What's your ambient temp?

Room temp is around 22 celcius, case is open.

CPU cores maxed at around 72-74 during initial torture test then dropped back to low 30's when I stopped it.

Just swapped the 760 in and running the torture test again.

Btw, the main power cable is actually 2 narrower ribbon cables together rather than a single wider one, so no straining the wires when you bend them back.

Update :

23 minutes and running for full torture test and gpu stress test using 8 x FSAA at the same time.

CPU cores mid 70's.

If I touch my ear to the fan grille of the PSU i can hear the fan gently purring. Its a constant spinning now, its not loud.

I can't hear the PSU fan above the GPU fans. For those who have had recent Twin Frozr cards, you'll know just how quiet that is.

Still no coil whine or vibration.

Well this certinly holds promise. Let's hope you didn't just get really lucky and get a very good one:)
Thank you Wonkey for a very thurough report. We knew backplates would be an issue but i seems you proved that without one you should be fine. Be aware though. The silicone based insulation on these cables are quite soft, so moving the case around too much with the cables rubbing on the GPU pcb could go very badly if the insulation wears down. It is very far fetched, I know, but it can still be worth a mention.

My Twin Frozr II cooler is nowhere near silent on full throttle btw. It easily drowns out the fan on my SX600-G when that is going on full speed as well. It's very easy to distinguish because the GPU dumps so much heat into the the case heating up the PSU that the GPU fans ramp down again after stress way earlier than the PSU. I suspect the cooler on your 760 is a twin frozr III or IV though, so there might not be grounds for direct comparison.
