Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX-L

Oh man, it was only few posts above. My apologies  I thought I had read this thread completely.

Hopefully this unit will arrive to Europe around same time although I havent found it listed anywhere here yet.

Well, they actually have pictures now on the Amazon item, they didn't before, so that's something, so I'm pretty sure the SX500-LG will actually be sold and in stock in North America and Europe before the end of 2015 :)

You are very optimistic my friend!! xD

I noticed the cool whine when I had the PSU in the case. I checked it with hearing by different locations and found out that it should be the PSU which was whining.

Have you tried running some stress tests for an extended period of time? As with the SX600-G, this has allowed some heat to build up inside the PSU and helped to reflow the glue on the caps. Seems to have worked for myself and a few others.

Very glad to hear that the semi-passive feature actually works. Have you noticed any chatter or gritty noises coming from the PSU fan at idle??

I just thought I'd post that I got an updated delivery date for the order I placed on the SX500-LG from Amazon. That being February 18 to March 3, and that's with Prime 2-day shipping.

Regarding the Chieftec SFX 500GD on the basis of the nl.hardware.info review I ordered one from Alternate in Germany for 80Euro two weeks ago.

This was to replace a Silverstone SST-SX600-G which I bought only a few months ago for my Sugo 08 Lite case and which I was quite unhappy with because of the fan noise (as mentioned in that PSUs own thread). As the SX600 is £100 here I regarded this a significant loss and was not going to replace it with another Silverstone PSU.

So, I have found the Chieftec to be quiet, and with a constant noise signature as opposed to the SX600 wild variations. It is stable, the 12V line does show as 12.2V which was maybe a little less precise than the SIlverstone.

Obviously it is larger than the SX600 but I have a Inno3D 970 and so the PSU connectors are clear - but I suspect a full length GPU would be a problem in the Sugo 08.

Now, I see a new article on nl.hardware.info http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...hieftec-sfx-500gd-louter-japanse-condensators regarding the comment earlier on this very thread about the Chieftec caps. In short you can contact them if you have already bought one for a possible RMA and future sales will already be Japanese caps

Very interesting. I wonder if Silverstone will be doing a similar exchange scheme, if High Power are making the switch back to all-Japanese caps across the board (or even if the delay is due to pulling all the early-run PSUs with Chinese caps).

We don't know if they are indeed producing PSU's with secondary Japanese caps, I doubt it considering their price. I'd guess they just replace the ones that people complain about with the ones from that "special batch". As said before, changing a component in an OEM design does not mean it's just the extra component price but added development and manufacturing costs.

That's a dangerous tactic in terms of marketing. It doesn't take much investigative reporting to expose it and then suddenly you are the company that uses the cheap exploding caps while claiming to customers that they are tier 1 Japanese.

Chinese caps aren't worthless though, it took a long time for bad batches to pop. I've not seen these for many years, even on cheap Chinese products. The way I see it, it would take a serious investigation to find out if this issue is not resolved. Basically because they can always claim they still have left-over inventory in the shops. In the end, cherry-picked review samples aren't new and most people wouldn't notice, know or care about capacitors.

Does anybody know if 130mm are the total length of a SFX-L or must i add 8-10mm for modular connector?

Not 10mm, the MiniFit Jr receptacles are 12.8mm tall, and the daughter PCB is attached with 8mm hex stand-offs inside. Plus the metal enclosure. So there is an additional length of around 4mm of the PSU itself.

If you want to add also the length of the modular plugs, then add 10.7mm plus whatever minimum bending radius for 18 AWG wire.

From another thread and from memory, about 2.5cm is enough. Probably less.

In my designs I assign 4cm of space.

So that becomes 130mm + 40mm. If the PSU is internal with internal cable then add another 30mm.

Regarding the Chieftec SFX 500GD, despite what Chieftec told nl.hardware.info about recalls, a) they are insisting on a photograph of the serial number on the actual PSU (and not just the number itself) b) they insist that the old PSU is sent in first once the RMA is granted, and c) the supplier Alternate.de knows nothing of the issue or recall.

The EU distributers of Chieftec are at pains to point out that the capacitor choice would not impact performance or longevity.

At the moment it's just not worth taking my ITX PC apart again for this as the unit appeared fine and works fine, but it's interesting that a manufacturer needs a photo to determine build state.

Well, I'm building a system and ordered this (have to wait like everyone else). Is this still the quietest SFX PSU (factoring inherent coil whine)?

Is the coil whine so bad that the regular SFX with their smaller fans is quieter?

For my build I need an SFX, so if I could get the quietest possible, that'd be great.

There aren't enough of these out there yet for us to say too much about coil wine I think. And coil wine is a confirmed issue with the 600G, though many (myself included) has had success with "running it in". Coul wine seem to be very dependant of HW combinations as well. These days I only get it when i Overvolt my GPU.
Though I am happy with my 600G, if I were building now, I would wait for this I think. And if I upgrade to better quieter GPU/GPU cooling, I might consider this anyway to get rid of all small fans in my system.

Ah ok, thanks for the advice. Well, I have to wait for my Ncase M1 anyway, so doesn't hurt. As you can probably tell, this is my first time dealing with SFX form factor PSUs. I am excited though. Crossing my fingers and hoping I'll love the SX500-LG.

This is probably an unnecessary comment, but just in case; Make sure to check out the M1 main thread for compatability issues regarding SFX-L and long GPUs if you're not already in the loop.

Thanks for the heads up. I've seen those images of the cables bending sharply and touching GPUs. Though I'm not using a long GPU, or a GPU for that matter. Going to be a dedicated capture/stream machine with a Micomsoft card in the PCI-E slot.

NP. Nothing to worry about then:cool:

Don't seem to be that far off, Swedish retailer Inet.se listed it today and expect it to be in stock 6 Feb. Most of us should be able to wait 2 weeks :)

Inet.se apparently got a delivery early, hopefully i'll get mine tomorrow or the day after that. :D

I didn't think electronic components were any cheaper in Sweden than in Norway but it's a full 350SEK more expensive here. Since currency value is almost negligible that means that it seems to be about 100SEK/NOK less expensive than what i paid for the 600-G!

That can't be right. Maybe it'll adjust once more retailer has it in stock.

Well, you can enjoy a skolebrod and a solo while you wait, that should even us up. ;)

Just installed mine and did a quick test, haven't got a gpu in my pc ATM but i did run Prime to test the "semi-passive'nes". Gave up after 20 minutes, fan hadn't moved a inch and not a hint of coil whine. Very happy with it!

What are the specs of your rig?

Good to hear on coil whine, so that's one whining and one with no whine so far.

P8Z77-I, and 3770K.
And as soon as you sell me one of those brackets a 980 or Titan Black :D

Can you say anything about the quietness of the fan? Is the fan noise pleasant?

I might pick this one up this week... Hope it's worth it.
