The Wii U is done

They need to bring back the NES or SNES brand back for their next console/handheld. 2016 holiday launch with 3rd party titles and a new Mario / zelda wii u remaster @ launch would be an instant buy for me.

They aren't going to launch a new console or handheld in 2016. 2017, maybe a new console.

If Nintendo released a 32 bit console with modern Nintendo games people would go nuts over that.
I'm talking sequels to existing games or Japanese games that never made it in the states.

I decided to download bayonetta 2 demo. Holy crap this is fun! Im buying it in monday.

I am buying a Wii U when Zelda shows up. I might even get it sooner. I don't care for Mario games but Zelda, Bayoneta, and Star Fox I would play. I picked up a PS4 just for ffxiv. The only single player game out now for it that I would play is Last of Us. The Wii U is looking good to me, as one standing on the outside looking in.

I'd assuming there are quite a few people in your same boat. Just waiting for that game / Price drop...probably getting both at the same time.

They are going to launch the new 3DS this year in the US/UK. You can't even buy a regular 3DS in the US/UK because they are sold through.

Its likely we'll see a hint of a new console in 2016 however. Likely 2017 when it releases. Nintendo is very interested in moving on from the Wii U.

I'd like to try and dispel some Wii U/general Nintendo myths.

Disclaimer: I'm a Nintendo shareholder, so I have a vested interest in making them more business.

1. Wii U is weak, therefore it's not worth buying.

No, it's not as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One. But it does have more modern hardware than the PS3 and Xbox 360, and is therefore able to produce actual next-gen effects. It's also $100 cheaper than the competition, $200 if you can snag a refurb directly from Nintendo.

2. It has no good third-party games.

It has a few, such as Rayman Legends (with Gamepad-specific controls), Call Of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Need For Speed: Most Wanted (which uses PC-quality assets), and the exclusive Zombi U. None of this season's hot multiplats, though - the next big third-party title will probably be Project CARS, likely in the 2nd quarter.

But IMO the first-party offering is the best since N64, so unless you absolutely NEED your greybrown bloodfest/EA Sports fix...

New Super Mario/Luigi Bros. U
Nintendo Land
Wii Fit U
Pikmin 3
Lego City Undercover
The Wonderful 101
Super Mario 3D World
The Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
Bayonetta 2 (includes port of Bayonetta 1!)
Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

...surely you can get some fun out of those?

There are also a ton of great downloadable indie titles, as well as full original Wii backwards compatibility (including its Virtual Console library). And as has been mentioned here, it can be modded for GameCube compatibility, if you so choose.

Then on top of all that, there's 2015's lineup!

Splatoon (new in-house IP, team-based online third-person shooter - it's already got a following...)
Yoshi's Woolly World
Mario Maker
Kirby And The Rainbow Curse
Nintendo-developed Star Fox
Zelda Wii U, with massive open world
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Devil's Third
Maybe Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem (all we know is that it exists)

And who knows what E3 will bring? Animal Crossing? The final version of Project Giant Robot? An old revived IP? Eternal Darkness 2? Vitality Sensor U???

3. The Wii U is Dreamcast 2 - Nintendo is doomed.

Nintendo has a TON of money in the bank, no debt, and will likely post a net profit this year. Their next console/handheld could be Virtual Boy 2 and Super N-Gage, and they'd still be rollin'.

If Xenoblade Chronicles X delivers on it's promise, it will be interesting to see if Wii U sales explode as the massive RPG audience is compelled to play it.

That is not a title that would sell consoles here in the States.

I love xenoblade but its not a mainstream system seller. Nintendo just keeps doing its thing they are the only ones not releasing busted title after busted titles you have to appreciate that.

Why for the love of fuck, won't Nintendo bring pokemon to a console that is not a handheld. Also how bad ass would it be if Zelda : Link between worlds was remastered for wii u? Too much segregation between their handhelds and wii u. I would be happy goose if you could play 3ds games on the wii u, either on screen or just the gamepad.

WTB Pokemon Snap for the Wii U. That is one of my favorite games of all time :D

Never was much of a fan of Xenoblade. I like my JRPG's on the classic side of thing, which means they don't make RPG's I like anymore, at least on console anyways.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem however should be about the greatest thing ever made.

I want to say that Nintendo announced in the last two years they were finally making unified middleware libraries for 3DS and WiiU to reduce development costs*. Smash Brothers is probably the first result of that effort, so hopefully we'll see more soon.

So I finally broke down and bought the kids a WiiU for Christmas.

First the hate:
The gamepad still sucks conceptually. It's battery life is terrible, and I just don't get the appeal. Looking down at it is a major distraction and just causes me to crash into the wall in Mario Kart. They should have done away with it completely, and worked on a mechanism to stream wiiu games to the 3DS for when the TV was otherwise occupied. Think PS4 streaming to the Vita. I hate that I have that stupid motion bar sitting on my TV again - lame Wii gimmicks that my grandmother thought was cool. The menu and interface sucks. I see ads on the gamepad once and a while when I boot it up - lame lame lame. The eshop is laid out terribly. Also, the whole Nintendo ID thing is confusing at best. Do my kids each need their own ID? And what is a Nintendo club ID and why not have one Nintendo account... Also, why can't I use one ID for my wiiu and all the 3ds' in the house? Their online stuff sucks badly. 32GB of storage? That holds what? A few games? An you want me to use the eshop?

Now the good:
The games are fun. Gotta give Nintendo credit where it's due. Mario/luigi bros is done well, mario 3d is great, Nintendoland - god my kids LOVE this game. Mario Kart - one of, if not the best in the series. Bayonetta 2 - amazing game. Just great Nintendo fun - hopefully they keep releasing good quality games - Metroid, Zelda, etc. I like how all the WiiU games that I've played seem to work with the pro controllers, and don't require the gimmicky crap. Nothing irritated me more on my wii than being forced to use the nunchucks and motion controls. I'd rather not have it at all - but at least it seems I'm not forced to use it ala the wii days. The gamepad is comfortable and even though I never look at the screen - it's a good quality controller. It doesn't have a paywall to access online features, and the network seems to hold up (it was the only network working on xmas morning I believe). I dig the wii emulation mode - get rid of the old boxes and make room!

Overall, not as bad as I thought. I still think there were poor design choices that hurts the console - but if they keep releasing good games it'll be overcome.

B+ It was worth the investment.

Questions:
1) You can only have one gamepad? What if my kids break it - can I get a replacement? This is almost certainly going to be an issue - the youngest boychild can get rough with the controllers...
2) What is the deal with the price of Pikmin 3? It's like $80 everywhere I look. I'd like to try it but jeez. Buy it on the eshop (and then buy an external hard drive because 32GB)? =\
3) If I buy on the eshop - do I own the game or is it tied to the console? Think back to Q1 - what if I need to buy a new WiiU. Is it a hassle to transfer your digital purchases to a new console - their eshop and nintendo ID thing does not inspire confidence that I won't get screwed.
4) Is the pro controller the same as the old wii pro controller (where it plugs into the wii mote) or is it stand alone? Worth buying if I have the old style pro controllers (whatever they were called)?
5) All save games are stored locally on the 32GB drive? No ability to save to the cloud?
6) Is there a cable to plug in the gamepad to the console like a wired controller? Or is it "use the AC adapter that came with the stand / buy another adapter and find an outlet near my couch" (which I don't think I have one closeby) :(

@Kongar

Questions:
1) You can only have one gamepad? What if my kids break it - can I get a replacement? This is almost certainly going to be an issue - the youngest boychild can get rough with the controllers...

I hear that it supports two, but so far they're not available separately in the US. Haven't tried looking myself, so this is second-hand heresay.

2) What is the deal with the price of Pikmin 3? It's like $80 everywhere I look. I'd like to try it but jeez. Buy it on the eshop (and then buy an external hard drive because 32GB)? =\

I got Pikmin 3 during the MK8 promotion for free. However, it's normal price on the eShop. Just pick up a 64/128GB flash drive. should be plenty of storage, and you can always swap them in and out later.

Not sure on this one. Nintendo had to handle this on the Wii. I haven't run into a problem on the Wii-U, so not sure how it works. Worth knowing more about definitely. I just haven't researched it myself.

4) Is the pro controller the same as the old wii pro controller (where it plugs into the wii mote) or is it stand alone? Worth buying if I have the old style pro controllers (whatever they were called)?

Pro controller is stand-alone wireless. (Bluetooth and will work with PCs etc.)

5) All save games are stored locally on the 32GB drive? No ability to save to the cloud?

I don't think there's a cloud option. You can store locally, or to the SD card slot. Probably USB storage too I imagine. (I've only done the first two.)

6) Is there a cable to plug in the gamepad to the console like a wired controller? Or is it "use the AC adapter that came with the stand / buy another adapter and find an outlet near my couch" (which I don't think I have one closeby) :(

Not aware of any wired options other than using the power supply that goes with the stand or maybe picking up a second. I haven't had issues with battery life at all. I've never played longer than the charge lasted, and have played for several hours at a time before. Then just set it on the stand when done.

I definitely disagree with you on the value of the gamepad. It's great for off TV play. The 3DS would be too small for my liking (except maybe the XL) and has too low a resolution. It's also great in Wind Waker, where it makes good use of it. We use it constantly in my house. It also stands up to my four year old. No issues yet at all.

Definitely curious on the game-transfer info from question #3 though. I just haven't looked into it myself. Would love to get the details though.

So I finally broke down and bought the kids a WiiU for Christmas.

Why are you looking at the screen while playing Mario Kart? You can get the minimap on the TV screen...

Questions:
1) You can only have one gamepad? What if my kids break it - can I get a replacement? This is almost certainly going to be an issue - the youngest boychild can get rough with the controllers...

They will replace it for $80 if you destroy it and send you broken Gamepad back to Nintendo.

Tied to the console last I knew.

4) Is the pro controller the same as the old wii pro controller (where it plugs into the wii mote) or is it stand alone? Worth buying if I have the old style pro controllers (whatever they were called)?

It is all wireless.

5) All save games are stored locally on the 32GB drive? No ability to save to the cloud?

None.

6) Is there a cable to plug in the gamepad to the console like a wired controller? Or is it "use the AC adapter that came with the stand / buy another adapter and find an outlet near my couch" (which I don't think I have one closeby) :(

You can just plug the cable right into the controller, you don't need the stand I thought? Use an extension cord or something. The battery life on the Gamepad does suck, total bonehead move by Nintendo to not launch with the larger battery as standard.

It's battery life is terrible

You can buy a higher capacity battery.

Looking down at it is a major distraction and just causes me to crash into the wall in Mario Kart.

You don't need to look at the GamePad screen during MK races.

I hate that I have that stupid motion bar sitting on my TV again

If you don't play games that require the Wii Remote, you don't need it.

I see ads on the gamepad once and a while when I boot it up - lame lame lame.

Ads? You mean the Miiverse icons? They're links to game discussion boards.

What is the deal with the price of Pikmin 3? It's like $80 everywhere I look. I'd like to try it but jeez.

From what I've heard, it's out of print. Same thing happened to Pikmin 1, actually. Gotta free up shelf space for the Karts and the Smashes, I suppose...

Is there a cable to plug in the gamepad to the console like a wired controller? Or is it "use the AC adapter that came with the stand / buy another adapter and find an outlet near my couch" (which I don't think I have one closeby) :(

Try this, or an extension cord as has also been suggested.

FYI, Nintendo's support site is your friend. ;)

It was definitely a full screen ad - twice. I'm not sure if it was a setup thing and that's the last I'll see of it, or a once and a while thing. It was for something Nintendo, "sign up now" which I clicked away without reading, and the second was something about the eshop which I again clicked away.

Another positive I should mention that I forgot - I don't know what kind of voodoo black magic it's using between the gamepad and the WiiU console, but it's the only device that works flawlessly in my house. S California - surburbia hell - MILLIONS of wifi signals and other interferences conflicting with each other. However it's doing it, I can go an order of magnitude farther away from the console than I can with say PS4 to Vita, or how far I can get a wireless signal from my router. I expected the "game on the gamepad" thing to not work at all (due to my living conditions) but it delivered...

I think the ads were an opt-in thing. I believe you can disable them in the miiverse/online settings.

I actually have problems with my gamepad; every 2-3 hours I get a warning about poor signal and sometimes it goes out. I'm not sure why as I'm sitting on the other side of the room from the console, maybe 12 feet and a coffee table breaking line of sight.

The GamePad is a pretty impressive piece of tech. Gyroscope, accelerometer, geo-magnetic precision, TV remote, NFC, and there's only one frame of latency between its screen and the TV!

Be sure to try out Wii Street U and the Panorama View demo!

I disliked the pad as well at first.

but after using it I find it very comfortable and the day your kids and/or wife are watching something fucking utterly stupid on TV but yet still want you to pretend you give a shit about them and stay in the same proximity a light bulb will click and you'll pull that pad out and play some Mario while they waste their brain cells finding out what a Kardashian is.

It's biggest downfall is range. Most I know can't cover their entire house with the gamepad.. I have trouble just walking into the living room about 20 or so feet away with a wall in the way.. Luckily though it works flawlessly in the bathroom so I can game while dropping the kids off at the pool. :p

The first time I saw the gamepad, it looked like it would be awkward and uncomfortable to use. Then some friends bought a Wii U for their kids and were having trouble getting it on their home wifi network. I finally got to try the gamepad, untethered to a store kiosk, and really liked it. Bought my Wii U a few months later. I get tired of people calling it "gimmicky".

It is though. Its impressive tech for what it is but it has downfalls that really hold it back.

I don't want to buy a new battery for a new controller that I just bought with a new system. Anything I have to buy parts to replace for day 1 is dumb. Nintendo should have put a proper battery in it. With the original battery it doesn't even last 2 hours , fucking dumb.

It should be HD as well because its actually sub HD. Its part of the reason why it gets away with being so responsive. It doesn't have as much bandwidth to transfer. I shouldn't be using a sub HD display in 2015. Its not a portable console so it doesn't have that excuse. Also the display isn't calibrated right so the colors and the contrast are both off. This might not be a big issue for most people but compared to my TV I notice it every time. Considering however Nintendo launched it in 2012 I'm willing to let this slide.

Why hasn't any creative Japanese or Western developer made either an Advance Wars type game or straight up RTS? This controller practically is made for such a game. Speaking off which...

Why do so many games make poor use of it? Even Nintendo doesn't know what the fuck to do with it most of the time. Its disabled in Donkey Kong Country : Tropical Freeze entirely .. the screen is just black. And that's one of the best games on the console.

There are many legit reasons why people call it "gimmicky". Nintendo has yet to prove or justify its choice in designing a gaming tablet for its gaming console. We all know the reason.. iPad's where at the very top of their popularity when the Wii U came out and Nintendo thought it would incorporate that trend into their console.

Having said all that I love my Wii U. The gamepad has grown on me but if they ship their next system with one it will be the last generation of a Nintendo home console ever. It will sink their ship once and for all. They should make a controller exactly like the Pro Controller for the Wii U. That controller is the unsung hero of the new generation of consoles. It connections hyper fast , extremely comfortable and the battery lasts a good 80 hours (the PS4 controller lasts about 4-6 hours and the Xbox One is unlimited because of the easily swap battery options). The Wii U Pro Controller might be my second favorite controller of all time.

I hope Nintendo realizes that it can't undercut its GPU next generation. Backwards Compatibility needs to go as well as it holds back hardware options. Wii's are cheap as shit and the Wii U is not going to be a great demand for B/C functionality like the Wii was. Use this opportunity to incorporate a whole separate infrastructure into the console that allows it to maximize its GPU/CPU muscle at the best bang for the buck. If they do this third party developers will come flocking to Nintendo. It'll also increase competition among the 3 which will only be good for us.

I agree with your point about the gamepad.

Fire Emblem X SMT should be an RTS. Good games take a while to develop.

Them amping up the power will amp up the cost. Worst thing they could do. What do you mean Wii-u wont have good need for Backward comparability? It already has one of the best Mario Kart and super smash brothers. These games are near timeless I still Play SNES and n64 mario kart.

Mine works in my bedroom on the top floor. Wii U is on the main floor, and not directly under me either. It also works in the basement below the living room too. There are two rooms that it doesn't work very well in, but those are on the opposite side of the brick chimney from the Wii U. Otherwise the whole house works for me. I've got a metric ton of wireless signals bouncing around my house and neighborhood too.

If I remember correctly the Wii U is at 5GHz, so maybe you have something interfering in that range?

I've played for well over 2 hours at a time. You might just need a replacement battery period. I'd say I average at least 3 maybe slightly over. Mine's not all that new either. I bought it the day the Zelda edition hit the stores, and it's still working great.

So none of you ever experience connection issues with the gamepad if you're in the same room as the console? It sounds like I need to contact Nintendo.

I haven't had this issue at all. However, there was someone either way earlier in this thread, or possibly in the other Wii U thread (the one that doesn't suck :D ) that had a similar issue. I think he contacted Nintendo and got it sorted out.

So none of you ever experience connection issues with the gamepad if you're in the same room as the console? It sounds like I need to contact Nintendo.

I've never run into an issue with the Gamepad losing it's connection.

I might have. I held my pad down under our 2 inch thick solid steel coffee table and there was a bit of none responsive with the game pad or at least so I perceived. Wasn't able to replicate it. It works in every room of my apartment which isn't really saying much. But the important part is it works in the bathroom.

I have my wiiu in a closet with all of my other components. Between me and the wiiu is a 1950's plaster wall, complete with that wire mesh crap they put in there to strengthen the plaster.

I got mine at release and it sits and the controller sits on the charging stand when not in use. I can say that I get a good 3.5 hours out of a charge.

I have experienced the connection issues at least twice since I got it. I noticed that I hit power on the controller and it turns on, but the wiiu doesn't, which is a valid connection problem. I haven't seen that in a long time though, so it might have been resolved with firmware.

I can't complain too much about the controller's range and battery life. If the battery gets low, I just plug it into the wall and play while it's charging. It's not that big of a deal...

Sure, limited games....... very limited releases, terrible marketing for them.

But one thing, you said yourself, they are going to be great.......

Nintendo's releases are QUALITY releases. They are very bug-less games, that have a VERY high replay-ability. Something I do not see from rinse and release titles that come out on the PS4 and the XBone.

And your support comment you keep throwing out is utter BS. The third parties are coming back to Nintendo now and are seeing value in the console. Again, PLEASE, look at the example of Shovel Knight. That developer specifically said that they enjoyed the process with Nintendo and are going to work with Nintendo more in the future.

You ARE talking out your butt. Each "statistical" site you bring up is showing Nintendo losing profits, sure I see that. But what those companies fail to benchmark is how much of each console is still currently being paid off.

Nintendo is not losing any money on their console now.

Now please, stop baiting....

No they aren't, if you are using one indie title that's coming to other platforms as an example of third party support coming back you should probably just step out of the thread.

There are many other pro Wii U threads on the forums where about a dozen folks talk Nintendo. So feel free to head on over there and make that +1.

Of course they are finally turning a profit, at the prices they are charging for the hardware I would expect Apple level margins. I'm not "baiting", I'm fact bombing a thread that gets Nintendo fans upset.

Don't be stupid stock price can't continually rise. The Wii was an explosive fluke. The stock is higher then it was before the Wii. The Wii + DS drastically inflated the stock. They are completely in line with what they should be. The huge Spike is what is out of line.

nintendo-stock-price-monthly-graph.gif

Wait so stock doesn't matter because Wii was a "flash in the pan" and it is an "outlier"?

I've said that about 20 times in this thread and if no one calls you out on that being bullshit (Eraden, Freaky, Vlad, etc.) I'm going to be at a loss for words because reasons.

You're in fact... ...ridiculous... I see a lot of people just stating what they like and dislike about the Wii U. There seem to be some very balanced and honest opinions flowing through on these later pages. The only fanatical person is you.
