New Blizzard FPS, Overwatch

The remnants of Titan. Fine by me this game looks fantastic. Are people still bitching about Blizzard taking part in esports? Come on. What do you expect? esports games are HUGE right now. Blizzard must join this space to survive. Starcraft 2 isn't filling the hole Starcraft 1 did. Heroes of the Storm is a mess and likely will end up being put on the back burner.

This game looks like TF2 only BETTER frankly. As long as the micro transactions are not beyond reason then it makes perfect sense. Blizzard isn't giving up on the traditional gaming model they are simply evolving.

I'm glad something came of Titan but I hope Blizzard actually has a real IP not created as a by product of another in the pipe.

sc1 team + Bliz north (d1, d2).

Yeah they are breaking records alright. D3 was breaking them as well, and were getting 9.5s on review sites Great job!. 90% of the players didn't go past normal according to Bliz, but who cares about the quality when ppl will buy them anyways.

The statcraft team isn't gone and blizzard north was amalgamated into HQ, not "driven away." You don't know what you're talking about.

Most gamers don't play on "hard" in any game so I don't see your point there either.

Heroes of the storm was the peoples choice most anticipated game when it expo'd in Korea. Honestly where do people get all this hater info from?

Define must "join"... outside of consoles Blizzard is huge in e-sports, if it wasn't for them PC side e-sports wouldn't be worth spit right now. The glory days of Quake3, CS 1.6, and SC Brood Wars might be over, but it's not like Blizzard ever left.

Looks like TF2 with generic + lifeless characters. And only 6 vs 6. ROFL. This is 2014 for godsakes.

It's ridiculous, I don't understand how vanilla D3 got such high scores. It's like all the reviewers did was play the story and go WOW! at the cutscenes not realizing the game was completely broken and had 0 replay value. Which for a game that is MEANT TO BE REPLAYED was seriously fucking critical to the integrity of it. Reaper of Souls came in and fixed the replay value but they completely threw away the story and shit out some god awful plot line without even a single cutscene. The amount of corner cutting at Blizzard makes me sad of what the company has become.

You're talking out of your ass.

The primary designers from plenty of Warcraft content were on this.
Blizzard also brought on Mike Booth.
Who, exactly, are you talking about as being "driven off?"

Reaper, Hearthstone, Heroes... they're all breaking sales records and winning awards left and right. Game of the Year, Most Anticipated Game.

No i'm not talking out of my ass. The fact you made that statement and didn't give any thought to Blizzard North, the most famous departure, speaks volumes. There have been many pre and post World of Warcraft. Some with and without bad blood.

Heroes of the Storm isn't public, yet... Reaper? For myself and the almost 100 people in our voice comms it was to little to late. A small handful picked it up and all stopped playing in a month. Hearthstone is a financial success but it isn't what Blizzard built their company upon. INNOVATION. Nothing innovative there and its a niche market. They did a hell of a job targeting a new market though. Overwatch looks like every popular character in media/entertainment thrown in a blender and plopped into a TF type genre. There was nothing in that to get me excited. I was hesitant with D3 but it at least hooked me enough to buy it.

Further, why the hell would I care about a Mike Booth hire? Counter-Strike had been out for years before he did anything. The world has Minh Le and Jess Cliffe to thank for CS. Left4Dead was great, but come on, they did nothing but repackage it for Left4Dead2. Hardly a portfolio that gets me excited as a gamer who fell in love with WarCraft 1/2/3, StarCraft 1, Diablo 1/2, and early World of Warcraft.

Oh how I wish Blizzard North could have a reunion and create something special. As a team they were amazing.

/looks at all the Blizzard hate in this thread, goes up one thread to the PC gaming section of [H], out of the top 9 trending threads 3 are Blizzard games...

Blizzard was built on innovation? I guess you should let them know, because their MO has always been to take existing genres and refine them.

What does player count have to do with what year it is?

That's certainly true. WC, SC, WoW are all quite derivative. Fun, but derivative. Diablo was a little different. It took Roguelikes and changed the formula. Better? Debatable, but definitely different. This? TFC/TF2 with some tweaks and an even more uninspired aesthetic and feel.

Amazing amount of misinformation and hate going on in this thread. The only accurate things are the fact that Blizzard is built on taking existing genres and refining them; spoken from their lead developer.

During the Blizzcon panel they had a good 10-15 minute match of Blizzard employees. The gameplay looked very fast paced and responsive, with each hero being very unique. Each hero has a primary weapon, a movement ability, a utility ability, and a super.

Each hero will have voiceovers / interactions with the other heroes, particularly their 'nemesis'. This is similar to how Heroes of the Storm has different interactions between the different heroes.

They have 600 computers set up with Overwatch during Blizzcon for the crowd to play and provide feedback. People are absolutely stoked right now to play. Beta is planned to start in 2015.

The 6v6 team size was decided after careful consideration. They played around with 3v3 all the way to 16v16 but settled on 6v6 due to gameplay issues. With less than 6 players the weight of a single player was too high, whereas with higher player counts a person's individual contribution was too far diminished. It also ruins duels between other players; remember in UT when you'd be dueling some other guy for a good 30 seconds only to have 3 other guys come and frag both of you.

They have not decided if this will be F2P or a boxed game.

The build being displayed has 12 heroes but many more are planned / under development.

The graphics are very colorful (even more so than TF2) and has decent details. There are nice environmental reflections like pools of water and very high contrast / vibrant lighting. Not a bit of gray was seen, even in the 'desert' map. They made comments about how darker graphics get 'heavy' and 'tiresome' after a while and that the more colorful graphics make people connect to the world easier.

There is no deathmatch mode. All maps are based around team objectives. "Payload" which is an exact duplicate of TF2's (cart push / bomb run), and defend the point were showcased.

Support heroes are the real game changers - not the damage dealers. A support using their buffs / supers at the correct time can completely change the tide of battle (for example one of the heroes has a full team revive). This is in addition to things such as healing and damage increase / decrease buffs.
There's also non-twitch based heroes for people that prefer that style of gameplay.

All story will be done outside of the game itself completely, instead of trying to shoehorn it into the game. Alluded to using more of the Pixar style animations.

Also very little if any resources were used from Titan. Titan was actually canceled a good year and a half before the announcement of it being officially canned.

The majority of work on Overwatch has occurred in the past 6 months.

Other than some of starcraft and d2's art/cinematic/sound team, who stayed? I remember one asian guy from Bliz north that helped design demon hunter. That's it.

Played this today at Blizzcon. It was rather fun but I dont enjoy the cartoony feel. Reminds me of TF2 which I couldn't get into.

*Tinfoil hat on*

Was this suppose to be Titan, but is now a FPS 6v6 game?.....Looks like it was in the same universe at Titan?

Of course they did. 7 years of stuff generated and you think they would throw it away or just "vault" it?

Build up something new from created assets and make it worthwhile.

I agree, I don't see any company throwing away 7 years of development of a game.

If blizzard cancelled Titan MMOFPS in favor of a FPS 6v6 shooter game, then Titan must of not met blizzards standard of a game.

Too bad Bungie couldn't have learned this lesson.

looks like it could be passed off as if disney made a game. it will be a hit for 9-year-olds everywhere.

if titan was like that good fucking riddance.

I'm generally a fan of Blizzard games, but not as of late. This new IP doesn't spark much interest in me as well as Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. I'm also just not a fan of FPS in general due to motion sickness.

I love how people associate color with Disney.

Have a look at character lineup from FF7 and compare to Overwatch.
This art style is very "east asia" and the lead artist has those roots. Or I guess all anime is Disney?

It is interesting to compare it to Disney? Not sure why they came up with that one lol

I was thinking it looks ALOT like team fortress 2. I mean the cartoonish feel is even shown in the gameplay trailer.

Too many FPS now days and plus I think the good old blizzard is long gone. Now they far too much internet multiplayer focused in their games, the old blizzard made great single player campaign games and also concentrated on lan gaming.

The game is very much like TF2 with more dimensions. I'm talking about the art style. Its not "pixar" (which is what TF2 is) its definitely "Miyazaki"

if it was 3rd person, looks like fun

but FPS games make me puke on my shoes..yea, I'm that guy

and blizzard seems to be a company that takes existing genres and 'makes them better'

I enjoyed wow back in the day but I would never have played eq1
I enjoy hearthstone but never would play MTG

Game looks fine to me & has interesting characters. I like the concept of being your own super hero from whatever walk of life you come from. Isn't that kind of the essence of a super hero or villain? First thing that came to mind was "Guardians of the Galaxy".

The new trailer look good. I'm going to try this even if it's a little for child maybe?

Lot of FPS hate in here. I can't fathom the idea that people hate FPS games like Metro,BF or CS but then find games such as Hearthstone to be the tits. You couldn't pay me to play a game like hearthstone or Wildstar/WoW. Though Blizzard fans do seem to be of the typical neckbeard variety. Different strokes I guess.

Hearthstone is not MTG made better. Unless you define better as exponentially dumbed down.
