I'm finally gonna "splurge" on a gaming laptop but it has a few restrictions. I'm gonna have to be able to buy from amazon at least 900p for 14inch 15inch 1080p is preferred and absolute maximum is $1,200 but $1000 is the magic number. I plan on playing FF14, BF4 and my steam library of 200+ games. Wife has her 15 inch rMBP so its my turn. Any help would be awesome!

I had one about a month ago. I ended up taking the Lenovo y510p back.

i7 4770 m
16gb ram
2x 755m sli

The games I tried to play suffered from severe micro stutter. I tried different drivers and played w/ some settings but I couldn't get it to stop (Farcry 3, Crysis 3, and Planetside 2). The "Geforce Experience" also dumbed down the graphics severly in these games where they looked terrible :(

When I ran Elder Scrolls Online w/ a single GPU the game actually ran pretty well with high settings. I had a couple options turned down but the rest were high.

I really did enjoy the laptop but the micro stutter was game breaking for me :( If I could fix that problem I'd buy it again.

The one thing about the laptop is that I'd get a pad underneath it for sure to cool it off.

I haven't seen any other good "gaming" laptops for that price range. Everything else that seemed like a good buy was $2,000+

P.S. the laptop speakers were really good. I haven't heard any other laptops like it before...

Thanks for your input. I read up on the y510p and reviews also indicate microstutter. I'm now in search for something with a gtx 860m or even the gtx 765m. I know my budget is right but that's the thrill of the chase. I'll even do a used unit.

I have the y510p and haven't experienced any microstutter in the games I play. So it seems largely game dependent.

i'm a firm convert of the Asus G-series.. my family has 4 of them
G50vt
G71
G73jh
G74sx

the G50vt is starting to show its age with the 9800 gtm in it but still has never stopped working

while the G73jh and the G74sx are strong performers.

i can't speak for the new 550 but thats the one i'd get if i was after a 15" laptop

make sure you spend some time on Notebook check to check the performance of the mobile card.

I'd look at the Asus ROG and MSI gaming series laptops, especially the "new" versions that are meant to be "sleek/metal/luxury + gaming power", such as the G550 advertised above, and the MSI "Ghost Pro" series. Oh, check out the preview for - http://rog.asus.com/323592014/label...lade-gladius-gx500-formula-impact-g20-gk2000/ - for the GX500 which is said to be a high color gamut 4K, sleek metal gaming laptop from Asus ROG - though this may go beyond your price range.

I'd check out www.xoticpc.com and compare, even if you're going to buy on Amazon. There are many versions of the Asus and MSI laptops that have very similar model numbers but can have big differences in what's inside, so be sure that you get the best you can for the price.

Man I didn't know what I got myself into. So many options. for pure gaming should I just go for a dual core CPU or quad core? Because I'm dead set on getting a laptop with at least the gtx 860m maxwell core. I saw on AMDs side 7970m/8970m/m290x but none came with Intel CPU just the AMD apus.

Don't go with xotic, they are huge jerks.

btw, OP. If you have a Microcenter near by, i'd buy the laptop from them... You can try it out, if It sucks you can always take it back w/ no questions asked. I bought mine from Microcenter and did just that. They gave me 14 days to ensure it's what I wanted. Their price was same as newegg.com at that time.

When I determine that I didn't want that laptop anymore, I returned it and picked up a Nvidia GTX 770 instead and just upgraded my PC. I lost my mobility but my games run well :p

Just wanted to add that 2 cents. Good luck man.

For best performance, I'd go for the Alienware 14

Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV 14-inch Laptop
-Intel Core i5-4200M Processor (3MB Cache, up to 3.1GHz)
-8 GB DDR3L SDRAM
-750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
-NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M with 1GB GDDR5
-14-Inch Screen
-Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

other than that, If you wanted to get a larger screen, you could go for the
ASUS Vivobook V551LB-DB71T 15.6-inch Touchscreen Laptop

Please tell me your kidding. You have to be working for Dell to actually recommend this right? They are beautiful laptops but heavily overpriced

I have the same machine, they do go on sale sometimes for $899 with 0% interest for 12 months. It's overpriced relative to competition but the build quality and support is exceptional. I have had no issues and am very happy with it.

Another vote for Sager/Clevo. Especially if they're still producing the 17" style with the single removable underside panel. All of mine have lasted forever, are easy to clean thanks to that panel, and usually come out to be way better than an Alienware or something similar on the bang for buck scale.

I don't think this is the issue as I recently purchased a different laptop w/ a hybrid drive and it's performing very well. I think it was the SLI. I have a 5400 RPM drive w/ + 8gb ssd (hybrid). It's running very well. (ASUS ROG G750JS)

I purchased this particular laptop when it went on sale at Tiger direct for $1299. Good price for what you get.
i7 4700
16gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 870m
750 GB (hybrid)

with a spare drive bay for another drive (SSD) and 2 more spots for additional ram (32GB)
