Really? This is how our tax dollars are being used?

Adamski, 25, opened the $50 ticket from the Will County Forest Preserve District last week and read the letter alleging she had used a dog park without a proper permit. The citation arrived at her Bolingbrook home with a letter explaining the ticket, an application for a dog park permit as well as a copy of her social media post “admitting her guilt.”

Time to tweak those Facebook security settings. If you aren't a friend of mine you can't see shit on my page.

And many of you idiots want the government to control the internet. Here is your cake.

If you go by my Facebook posts, I'm a crack dealing, prostitute, pimp, bad ass motherfucker trespassing and causing ruckus. In reality, I don't do or sell drugs, am not promiscuous, and don't really cause a lot of trouble.

As long as your wallet really says Bad-Mother-Fucker on it.

Maybe Steve, if you live in Will County, IL. But they aren't using my tax dollars this way :D

Tweak them all you want Shade91, won't do any good if your posting on someone Else's facebook page like she did.

Not that I disagree with your sentiment but I'd be happier if they could both read AND comprehend.

This wasn't about the government controlling anything, She posted her comments on their page, of course they read it. Her comment about them monitoring it was kinda stupid too, like they put the page up there she thinks they don't read it themselves?

Still, they were wrong to issue a ticket based on her comment and doubly wrong because they actually misinterpreted her remark. Of course when it was brought to their attention that they had made a mistake it was corrected and it doesn't look like they got stupid about it so it all looks like a non-issue to me.

I'm back to worrying about people's comprehension skills :D

Would like to point out the ticket was dismissed and the officer was reprimanded for doing this. I live one county over from this area.

No. But, I might pick up a velcro wallet. Nothing says bad ass like velcro.

If there were pics, fine. She gave herself away. But, just claiming doing something isn't a valid way of proving something. Especially online, where people lie, exaggerate, use sarcasm, etc. that only friends would get that you were kidding.

BTW - does the local PD have a group of people that go through Facebook all day looking for offenders? I can see if someone narc'ed on her, but if they found her by just looking for them, that's a bit too far (like that's not rare with police these days).

That's good, because unless you are the IRS, you can't ticket people for stuff like this. You have no way to verify the veracity of the statement to begin with.

you need a permit to use a dog park?

Yeah, you think they let any asshole with a dog that has no shots and vaccinations into a dog park?

Granted there are no dog park police, its a liability thing for the city.

Very true. Parvo is a real bitch... It can stay there for quite a while, even after the dog is gone.

I can see the reasoning. Protection from lawsuits from people that don't take good care of their pets with vaccinations and such (and don't give me that BS about vaccination giving your dog autism.... :D)

My God, do any of you actually read? She posted her comment on the Park Service's facebook page. They didn't see it on her facebook page.

And yes, a written statement, even on the internet, is still a written statement.

I had to do more than just glance at the article based on lcpiper's excellent comment ... she posted on the dog park's facebook page (not her own) ... an employee of the park misinterpreted her comment and forwarded it to the county officials who manage the preserve area the park is part of ... it was an employee there who issued the ticket (but they later rescinded it the next day) and they stated that tips are supposed to be verified before they are acted on ... unless you are a taxpayer in Chicago this wouldn't impact you

The main lesson learned is that you should always be careful what you post in public and be careful about what you joke about (as a few people arrested for making terrorist threats can attest to) since even your friends might not always share your sense of humor and can forward your comments to people who might make your life very difficult ;)

Wow. :/

I killed Abraham Lincoln, a former US president. I confess.

Written confession.

Yea, I get your point. But, still a posting on Facebook shouldn't be able to be used as an admission of guilt. If there was a video and/or photos, then sure. If it was a threat against someone or something, I'd take it more serious. But, no threat, and just saying "look what I did".... Come on. I once posted a picture of my holding a growler on the other side of a sign that said "No alcoholic beverages beyond this point". Like I said, I'm a bad ass motherfucker.

However, you also have people doing Urban Exploration, taking pictures, and posting them online. Technically, they could be used as evidence of trespassing. But, most people wouldn't prosecute unless it was some secure facility and they were showing things they shouldn't be.

Another related lesson: Facebook "friends" are not necessarily actual friends. That person you used to go to elementary school with but haven't seen since? You're not friends. You're just acquaintances.

Sounds like a net positive tax dollars to me. Send these guys to that one rancher who owes millions.

Your right, we should ignore what people write on the internet, it could be anything. Well just forget about statements from people like Elliot Rodger because the stuff they say can't be used in court or anything like that.

A facebook identity is not a real identity.

Maybe, but the digital trail to your doorstep is real enough for the RIAA, the MPA, the FBI, and the rest of the world so keep on thinking that bullshit and see where it get's you.

This guy has it right.

In this case they did withdraw the ticket, indicating it didn't meet their burden of verification ... kids (people under 18) have been arrested for posting videos of criminal acts on the internet before including reckless driving, rape, assault, animal abuse, etc ... best bet is if you plan to break a law don't brag about it on the internet and certainly don't post video of you breaking said law :D

Okay, this is kinda low. Even for Illinois!

I thought that the stupid speed cameras were the epitome of law enforcement laziness.
This, however, brings it to an all-time new low.

So someone Googles "Bolingbrook Dog park", and then starts issuing tickets?

Pfft.

Um ... the post was made on the Dog park page and one of the workers at the dog park forwarded it to the county officials ... all they did was open their email ;)

Pics & videos, sure. But, for just saying shit? Check out /r/cringepics for some real doozies. There are hackers, murderers, gang bangers, rapists, damn near everything, posting on various forums, including Facebook. How many of them are legitimately doing what they claim? Probably very little.

Don't assume guilt with a social media post.

I don't make that assumption but there are two notable cases of people joking about shooting kids (after one of the high profile shooting incidents) and both are hung up in the court system (after years) because the accusation concerned a potential terrorist act (and it has probably destroyed both of these kids lives) ... neither incident involved the police trolling the net, both involved a friend or follower of the chat/thread sending the information to the police as a tip

I doubt most police agencies spend much time trolling the net but some people have lots of followers or friends who they only know peripherally ... also, a lot of kids might have parents who monitor their children's internet activity ... although I might occasionally talk a little trash in person I almost never put it in writing and never joke about anything that can be misconstrued at border crossings or airport security ;)

She deserves the ticket for just using Facebook in the first place.

That should have been a clear sign to you that I didn't RTFA :p

Not you making the assumption. More towards the cop sending the ticket.

Shooting kids and pranks/minor offenses are two completely different things. If someone is talking about shooting up a school or whatever, I'd take it seriously. At least go check it out and talk to the parents and see what the kids up to.

In the case of Chicago it didn't appear to be a cop ... more like a county park ranger or bureaucrat of some sort that issued the ticket and they did discipline that person for failure to investigate before issuing the ticket

I like how this all becomes an issue because she wrote a very ambiguous statement

“I was feeling bad that I haven’t bought a pass and been bringing Ginger there but I’m pretty glad I haven’t,”

reading that as it is, she didn't buy a pass, and brought her dog there, and she's apparently glad she didn't buy a pass.

However taking it all in the further context you see that she she was feeling bad about not buying a pass to bring her dog, all because of the kennel cough going around the place. That's why the ticket was dropped, if she wrote "I've been using the park without a pass because only suckers buy passes" then yes she should be ticketed as she is admitting the guilt. However the key is proving that it was actually her who posted the comment, I would like it if they just took the MPAA's approach and issue the tickets for those who admit to guilt via social media and then worry about those who actually try to fight it.

And to echo what others have said, a permit needed for a dog park?

Did they? Update to the story?
DeMauro said no disciplinary action has been taken against the officer who issued the citation but noted the issue is still under review.

And a park ranger has every right to issue a citation, just like a metermaid (not a cop) does, or a county inspector (again not a cop).

Yea, it ended up better than it initially came off as. Which is good.

Journalists get the same reaction when they report something without doing much (or any) investigation. The WTF stuff, then they update the story and say they were wrong (sometimes)...

Saying something online, then getting a ticket in the mail seems a bit dumb. Now, if an officer (park ranger, whoever) came by to ask her about it, then I could see it. But, it just seemed like blind ticketing to me.

Go figure, Chicago. Politicians there are more of a nutjob than the rest of the country.

So. Even lazier (with poor english comprehension skills to boot) then?
