Nexus-Five thread

I worked for Google and the Play Store up until a few months ago but was there during the time of the Nexus 4 Launch, I really really hope they don't screw up the launch again. I worked on the Google Campus, loved my job! But felt god awful for all the thousands and thousands of people I handled in a matter of a few months of difficulties, from lost shipment, duplicate orders to whatever, not acceptable for a huge company like Google.

They even fed us lies to tell the customers, what a crock.
Product was great but damn did we fail at delivering as we could have.
 
Anyone think Google should release it already? Damn just take my money!

I won't lie: I really like the white model. That black ring around the camera adds a distinct touch to the design.

It would be more awesome if the tacked 50$ to the price so you can "Moto X" custom your Nexus 5.....

I really hope Google has done some hardware or Android 4.4 battery magic.

My #1 issue with my S3 is battery life, and that's the main reasons I'm considering the Note 3. The N5 is the only other phone I'll consider, but I don't have high hopes with the 2300 mAh batter.

I was also waiting for the Nexus 5 too, but found such a good deal at Best Buy for new Galaxy S4's, at $99 on ATT contract, plus $80 credit for exchanging in my old HTC phone from 2 years ago. My wife and bought our S4's for only $20ea. on contract :D Too good a price to pass up. Plus I have been pretty happy with AT&T service in the Chicago area, the 4G is very fast for me, and no network issues, or loss of signal in the past year or so. They have really improved service a ton, very solid here.

I am rooted on stock, and getting some AMAZING battery life on this S4. Saturday / Sunday weekend, I went 1d 7h total battery life, with 5h 14m On Screen time, when the battery alert went off, stating 19% battery remaining. So I would have gotten 6h On Screen time, if I let the phone go all the down to 0.

On workdays, where I am busy and use the phone a lot, I unplug the phone at 6:30am, and on 4G / LTE most the day, I can come home and not have to charge it until 10:00pm, and that is typically with 5+ hours On Screen time. I haven't seen 6h On Screen time yet, but always in the 5h to 5.5h On Screen time, with 20% to 15% battery left when I check.

And the best part, if the battery does die, I just take the back cover off, and throw in another battery, and good to go immediately for another 20 hours :) Or if I want to throw in a larger SD/Card, no problem. The Nexus 5 doesn't offer these two options, plus comes with a 15% smaller battery, that is non removable.

We'll have to see how KitKat and a stock interface help things out. When Engadget reviewed the GS4 Google Play Edition, it noted that stock Android added about two hours of battery life in a stress test. That's no doubt because some of Samsung's sensor features aren't running, but I think we can also partly blame it on TouchWiz's processor demands.

I'm hoping that pure Android (and possibly optimizations through KitKat) counteracts the smaller battery.

I had a Note 2 for a month, and now a S4. Custom ROM's on both phones, always had better battery life on stock TW type ROM's over the AOSP ROM's, especially on the Note 2. I recall on my Note 2, a TW rom like CleanROM offered significantly better battery life, over CM10.1, I am talking a couple of hours On Screen time difference. And this has been discussed a lot on XDA.

The S4 is pretty even Steven, the Google Play Edition ROM, vs a TW ROM, get very equal battery life, but TW based ROM's get the nod for slightly better battery life.

Not sure why Touchwiz ROM's on both he Note 2 and S4 offer better battery life over AOSP / CM ROM's ?

Now imagine a 4.4 Kit Kat based Touchwiz ROM this Winter, on a Note 3, that thing will get three days battery life :) LOL. Or even 4.4 on the S4, should offer some great battery life.
 
Intuitively I would have thought a custom ROM could produce some better battery numbers, given that the manufacturer can apply some device-specific optimizations not present in the stock version of Android.

Anandtech rocks :cool:

Looking at the battery graph, the stock TW S4 gets approx 5% better battery life over the GPE AOSP edition. Not sure why the bloated Touchwiz actually gives better battery life, compared to the stripped down AOSP ?

And the HTC One on WiFi tests, gets a full hour better battery life on stock Sense 5.0 over the GPE AOSP edition. Strange

So is vanilla AOSP Android not known for the best battery life, compared to the likes of Touchwiz and Sense ? As strange as that sounds, it does seem true in my ROM experience over the years, that Touchwiz based ROM's always gave better battery life over CM or AOKP ROM's. At least basing that off my time running a Galaxy S2, a Note 2, and now an S4. If you want best battery life, stick with a Touchwiz ROM.
 
CM/AOSP often have unoptimized drivers for things like data handoff, because those are proprietary. Its not really surprising the battery life (and often signal and reception) suffers.
 
Google are trying their best to outdo the Nexus launch fiasco from last year. And looks like they are succeeding.

How bloody hard can it be to set a release date and event to announce the phone and end all the speculation? Bunch of morons.

I always throught that was handled by the (totally proprietary) baseband software, which is usually not part of the ROM? Not sure if it's the same for GSM phones, but it seems to be the case for Verizon/CDMA phones, as we're usually restricted to carrier/OEM supplied baseband software revisions to handle handoffs/reception operations and this usually doesn't change between ROMs.

Its quite likely that they don't consider a first-world problem like "ZOMG ITS NOT COMING OUT FAST ENOUGH!!! :mad:" to be an issue worthy of any serious consideration? Unless you don't have a phone right now, its not a big deal to just wait for the announcement. Its not like you'll be able to buy the thing at launch anyway, if last year's release is any indication.

In Google's defense, this isn't really any different, compared to Apple launching a new iPhone.

Before the iPhone 5 was officially announced and shown off by Apple themselves, we all know what it looked like, knew the spec's, knew pretty much everything that whole summer before it's released. But Apple kept it's mouth shut like nothing was going on, until they were ready to release it. Apple didn't seem to give a crap that the whole world knew everything about the iPhone 5 before it's official release.

Google is doing the same thing here.

Its nothing like the iPhone release though. No one expects Google to release specs before. But Apple, like any sane company, sets an event date and sticks to it. Google should've said 'we're holding an event on Oct 25/Dec 25 whatever'. They don't need to announce what its for or give any details. But it ends all this stupid speculation and daily blog posts on all the usual blogs about the release date.

Instead, Google is behaving like little schoolkids and seeing how much trolling they can do. Either that or they are complete idiots and haven't made up their mind on when to announce this.
 
My only question is "Black" or "White"? It will get released eventually but I'm liking the white as I prefer a black front as I run a black background, but the white back looks awesome. Wonder how or if it will mark up compared to Black?

That's not even a question really.....the white isn't all white so its a moot point.

I write that because I am kind of upset it isn't all white.....just.....grrrrrr:mad:

I'm leaning towards the white now. Without anything standout, like the glass back from the N4 and the faux chrome ring, the black version seems to be rather bland. Just a generic black soft matte shell. White version has some contrast with the colors.
 
I love how it's not fully white on the back, with black highlights here and there (the camera, the side buttons and whatnot).
 
Yeah that is what I mean about the color contrasts adding to the aesthetics.

Although maybe up close and in person (or with better pictures) the subtle texture on the material could make the black version more interesting.

I also feel the white will probably hold up to scratches/scuffs better and would likely be more seamless looking with a protective film (if you choose to go that route). Especially considering it looks like they might be user a softer texture/material for feel, the original leaked image which had the black for example already had scuffs/scratches on it -

I've had enough. NO MORE LEAKS or camera shots. What's the point, everyone knows the specs of the phone by now.

New Hangouts was supposed to be out yesterday too.

I'd say they've been successful in building a huge hype machine...among nerds and starving writers at the verge, engadget, android blogs, etc, etc

Yes. And Apple builds hype amongst the general public who are hyped for months for an Apple event, selling their old iPhones to get ready etc.

That's the difference between a company of geeks and a product company.

Exactly.

Let the geeks and blogs get in a tizzy over the Nexus 5. It's free press. All rumors, pictures, leaked spec sheets. Brilliant in my opinion because it's all for free.

Heck it's been so viral in the last week there are probably Average Joe's looking forward to the device and then they see the price? Pure win for Google.
