Battlefield 4 Beta Performance Preview @ [H]

I'll buy BF4 a year later for 5 dolla dollar bill ya all...then promptly uninstall it :D

does anybody else just buy the russian copy and change the language to english?

also F#%$ Origin.

Only people who want to get their account banned. You can't buy non regional games on either Steam or Origin, it is against the terms of agreement for both.

Generally speaking, the Russian CD key websites are very sketchy. You can trust places like Greenmangaming, Gamefly, Amazon (obviously..) and a bunch of others but I would avoid the russian CD key sites. I have known people who have used their keys only to get their steam account banned. Be warned!

I'm uploading a video that has Frap 99 running so you guys can watch how windows 8 runs the game at DX 11.1 on my setup at stock speeds.

Nobody is doing anybody a disservice. BF4 runs great on Windows 8 already so they need to get Windows 7 performance better. Fact is with THIS game most people will be running it on Windows 7. This isn't the future and nobody is trying to stop anyone from using Win 8 or doing it a disservice. I swear the Win 8 fan boys get touchy over anything negative even if it has nothing to do with it.

Should work equally well on both, win 8 have some additions and runs faster.

Upgrades abound, just got SSD + 16GB RAM + Win8 upgrade for testing. I will be doing a HDD vs. SSD test to see if SSD helps, and we will be testing BF4 with 16GB of RAM, and now I've got Win8 to test Win7 vs. Win8 perf in BF4. No rest for me :p

i found it interesting reading the [H] review and hearing how choppy it plays on the 770.

xCPU: 4770k @ 4.4
GPU: gtx 670 ftw 2GB @stock
RAM: 8GB @ 2133
Resolution: 19x10
OS: 8 64
Screen shot of settings

Map and game mode: siege of shanghai conquest 60/64
FRAPS results: Frames: 19065 - Time: 263047ms - Avg: 72.478 - Min: 46 - Max: 98

ill run some 4xaa benches to see how they compare to the [H] benches. the "b" button bug is killing me though, that is the button i use to jump!

It's almost finshed uploading ,, it's kind of rough as I have no way to hold the iphone and play also but it shows Frap the whole time and I don't know the record speed of an iphone 4 but it appears to have a hard time keeping up.

To me it appears more about getting a balance for the overall game as it's a big world your playing in and not so much max fps.

It runs almost flawlessly on my setup.

2560x1440 with every setting at maximum

60+FPS with rare dips into the mid 30's to low 40's.

Dell Ultra Sharp U2711
I7 3770k @ 4.5ghz
EVGA GTX680 FTW 2GB SLI @ 1267mhz GPU (with boost) / 6328 memory
32gigs of ram
Windows 7 Ultimate
240 GB Kingston Hyper X SSD (BF4 is running off the SSD)
2 TB WD Caviar Black in Raid 0

Expecting the performance to improve once the retail version hits and optimizations are made. I was getting 100+ FPS in BF3, so i am confident that BF4 will end up running towards the 70+FPS range after a months worth of patches/driver updates. I will get WIndows 8 if i need the extra boost, but i don't think it will be necessary.

All hail RoboBrent, our new overlord
I really appreciate it, so many say they have seen a huge difference on Win 8 without hard numbers to back up claims. I wonder about the ssd speed though. I load beta faster 99% of the time on my mechanical drive than a friend does on ssd.

Hard numbers (from earlier in this thread)

This is what spurred me to upgrade (had a Win8 Pro disc laying around).

BTW, thanks Brent - and at least it's exciting to get new gear...even if it is work. :)

That's the only website that I never heard of before that shows a ridiculous difference between the two OS's. I'm sure Win 8 shows an improvement but let's wait for the reality check from Brent.

It doesn't take a lot of digging to find answers as they say.

“We use DX11.1, there are some optimizations in it (constant buffer offsets, dynamic buffers as SRVs) that we got in to the the API that improves CPU performance in our rendering when one runs with DX11.1. This will be in BF4.”

The game engine is built on top of DX 11.1 and when ask..

We asked AMD about the Southern Islands, but AMD was very clear on the hardware support from the launch of the product - Southern Islands, Radeon HD 7000 Series is DirectX 11.1 compliant with full hardware feature level 11_1 (as listed on AMD Radeon HD 7970 Product Page). However, be warned that some AMD hardware from the 7000 series come only with the hardware feature level 11_0, as they are rebranded products from 6000 series of products (Northern Islands GPU architecture). It is rumored that the upcoming Kepler refresh (rumored GK112, GK114 and 117) will feature full hardware feature level 11_1 as well.

Kepler GPUs do support the following: Partitial constant buffer updates, Partitial constant buffer updates, Logic operations in the Output Merge, 16bpp rendering, UAV-only rendering, Partial clears and Large constant buffers.

By contrast, these technologies are not supported: Independent Rasterization (2D-Rendering), 16xMSAA Rasterization (2D-Rendering), Orthogonal Line Rendering Mode and UAV in non-pixel-shader stages.

Ok, but what is your point?

Where is this quote from? Gk112 114 and 117? That's funny...

fresh build

Im happy getting 100+fps on all ultra/1080p, but I still get the lag/cpu spike every few minutes. FPS will drop to the teens for a second then everything is back to normal.

The point is why windows 8 runs the game better then windows 7 if you have the DX 11.1 hardware,

We already knew that. Read my posts more carefully next time. We are questioning the one website's large delta between the two that nobody else can seem to back up with anything but more words and a link back to that website...does that clarify my point?

I'm really interested in image quality of win7 vs win8, if there is any difference... performance isn't an issue for me, but if image quality is considerably better it could be a reason or me to switch to Win8.

My latest take on it is that i played about 4-5 days ago

Specs:
2500k@ 4.3ghz/win 7 / 8 gig DDR3 / 6950 crossfire / latest beta drivers out.
installed on SSD with plenty of room left.

Was getting bad FPS 40ish but constant stuttering every few seconds (never more than a 10 second interval in best case scenario) it would drop down to single digit Slide show for 2-3 secs. Load times were ridiculous too (2~ minutes)

I tried over clocking from stock 3.3 to 4.3 since my CPU was unusually high, i wiped my drivers/re installed, re installed the game. closed all other apps / and background processes, i tried lowering my in game settings to the lowest possible settings and the average FPS went up but the stuttering symptoms were just as present.

As of today the game had an update when i tried to play, all stuttering is now gone, i have taken the overclock off my CPU and the game is silky smooth, no more stuttering, i have the video settings set to custom somewhere close to the Ultra preset. played on 64 player servers without a hitch :) no new video drivers or anything, this was a game client update/fix. load times went back to slightly longer than BF3

 looks like i'm not gonna have to update to windows 8 :p
fuck Windows 8!

I have one of the nice Gigabyte 4gig Gtx 770s with those nice 3 fan coolers. I wonder if a video card like that would have better performance. Any chance you guys have one to test with?

Had craptastic performance at launch. Then I think some updates came out which removed most of the stutter. Got a 7950 and I'm able to play on ultra. Maybe a better proc would land me smoother fps.

Quickie, what are you guys using to monitor FPS in game? Afterburner OSD seems to have gone inop and will display everything BUT FPS on my G15's display.

FRAPS, as stated in the article. Seemed to work just fine and will display on a G15.

Great article. I'd love to see a follow up covering this and any other games where there is such a big gap between current quantifiable metrics and gameplay 'feel.'

If its not speed or consistency of frame delivery leading to good feel, then what is it? Any attempts to better isolate or describe the missing X factors could be a great contribution both to the way equipment is reviewed, as well as possibly improving new equipment to come.

Separately, I'm pretty concerned this game required such a huge chunk of CPU power from a system that is likely easily past the 90th percentile as far as all gamer systems. Does this mean the vast majority of PC gamers can expect an unplayable experience on their more mainstream rigs? Or are there user accessible settings that can dial down the CPU required (at what cost to gameplay or visuals?)

Even after patches 8 is faster. Can't wait for Mantle. People waiting for windows 9 from 7 are going to be disappointed anyways. Just move to 8 already with the modifications out there.

My 6300, albeit greatly overclocked, runs the game fine. Most people have i5/i7 that blows my proc out of the water, so I think people will be fine.

According to Kyle how can low FPS of 8 feel smoother and more fluid than low FPS of 24?

I'm assuming that [H] will have a Mantle comparison once that hits?

It depends on where the FPS low happens. The difficulty with MP game testing in crowded servers is that many things can be unpredictable. I happen to die quite often when doing the data collections, and that does funny things to the frame rates depending on which way my character falls (i.e. face up at the sky increases frame rates). I suppose that the dip seen in the graph you're referencing was from one of my deaths or the transition to/from the spawn selection screen, as I did not feel that dip during game play. Also, as the article states, I did spend a significant amount of time (far beyond what is graphed) with both cards at each of the graphed settings to form my opinion of the overall experience.

I'm assuming that [H] will have a Mantle comparison once that hits?

Of course :).

That is more or less what they're going to do, I think it was stated in the thread somewhere.

Yeah figured they did just didn't feel like going through eight pages:D.and just wanted to throw that in there.since i know they refuse to give up their win 7 build.(blame start screen)
